Pedestrian Bonzo is one of those who walks very slowly over the zebra crossing, jumps the lights when the little man is red, makes as if he was going to cross the road or climbs and walks over those cars parked on the pavement. Apparently he's attempting to commit suicide, but in fact he doesn't risk his life any more than that it is at risk in reality, and all he intends to do is exploit that fear that all drivers have of running over a person. "Only with these kinds of actions", thinks Pedestrian Bonzo, "is it possible to domesticate traffic in the city and reduce the risks and accidents of all kinds to which the pedestrian is submitted to."
The fact is that Peatón Bonzo is a form of pedestrian disobedience rebelling against the sovereignty of the car in the city. As Curro Aix (one of the numerous spokesman from Peatón Bonzo) reminded us, "though the city is just the tip of the iceberg of this absolutist domain of the car, as the statistics of deaths on the road (perceived as an unavoidable sacrifice to the god of progress) come to show or the War in Iraq, caused by oil, (a fact which almost no-one questions now)".
Peatón Bonzo is neither a social movement nor a group of artists, but an open campaign in continuous reconstruction and expansion inviting all those interested to re-appropriate it, re-use it and re-construct it in their own way. Up to now, their more visible actions have been carried out in Seville and its metropolitan surroundings, where various inflammatory leaflets have appeared, posters with threatening mottos, stickers imitating the famous motto of "No war" (substituted by a bloody "No car") and a documentary showing contrasting opinions from various experts about this new phenomenon. Furthermore, last April, Peatón Bonzo invited people to a communal paella in the roundabout of Niña de Los Peines (in the neighbourhood of La Alameda, in Seville) to present their spring/summer collection of new designs of superhero bonzo outfits, from the volunteer against the tar-car to superhero airbags, including the zebra man or the specialist bonzo. All of them carried out practical examples of the action tactics of Peaton Bonzo, so provoking a certain scare among drivers who happened to be passing through the area.
The members of Peatón Bonzo usually insist on the fact that their enemy is the car, not the driver. "Drivers are slaves to their cars!, they claim, and all of them, even those who take the car even to go to the shop on the corner are pedestrians sooner or later and, therefore, our potential allies." For Peaton Bonzo, the car is the most emblematic symbol of a ferocious energetic capitalism that promotes a whirlwind of mobility and transforms the vehicle (a luxury item that millions of people in the planet cannot afford) into a bare necessity (both contaminating and dangerous) and, the most paradoxical of all, into a medium to obtain freedom and independence. However, Antonio Santos (another of the spokespeople form Peaton Bonzo) pointed out that "more than 90% of the times we use the car it is out of a pure need (though what they sell to us is that the car gives you freedom, that you can reach 'the end of the world' in it) and 50% of the times that we get annoyed or angry is surely due to a situation related to traffic".
