Yogi Bhajan

The Future of Planet Earth
by Yogi Bhajan

God bless the entire mankind to preserve their mental peace, the peace of the planet. Thy given gift, the Mother Earth, may all have respect and reverence for all what they are doing. Give them the consciousness, prosperity and grace to deal with their own environments in a graceful way as they want to deal with their own self and personality...

Quote of the Month

Mother

The Mother of us all is Nature,
The power of God through Grace.
The Mother we serve is Liberty,
That sacred right of the human race.
The Mother we honor is she who bore us,
Who drew milk from her own blood.

So in this day let us bow with reverence,
As grateful children should,
And respect our Mother Nature,
Pledging ourselves to Mother Liberty's light,
That the children of the mothers beside us
Can have a future which shines bright.

Kundalini Yoga Community in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

In beautiful Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Kundalini Yoga is growing in popularity with the recent development of over 10 Kundalini Yoga Centers, including the first, Centro Guru Ram Das. Built using eco-friendly construction, the center was initiated by community leader Guru Sangat Kaur but quickly became a group project. With the growth of the community, the center recently added a Gurdwara alcove. Teacher Trainers and Sikh Dharma Ministers Pritpal Singh and Pritpal Kaur led the Level 2 Teacher Training in Authentic Relationships and were present at the opening of the first-ever Gurdwara in Belo Horizonte.

Message from the 3HO Chief Executive Officer

Sat Nam,

I am thankful that throughout the world humanity shares a day that celebrates and honors our home, Mother Earth. I personally find great healing within Mother Nature and greatly appreciate all that she shares and provides us.

When I learned this month’s focus of our eNewsletter, I asked myself, “How am I taking care of our planet Earth?” Here is how I am doing so: I live in an adobe home that has no central heating or cooling unit in it; the house has a passive solar heating system, a Russian fireplace and a pellet stove, and the water comes from a well. I recycle and compost, all of my toiletries and cleaning products are cruelty-free, chemical-free and mostly organic; sometimes I make these products myself. I bring my own earth-friendly bags to the grocery store, reject plastic bags, don’t buy paper towels or napkins, hang my clothes to dry and drive a Volkswagen Jetta so that a little gas gets me a long way. And of course I am a vegetarian, mostly vegan, but sometimes I cheat and eat dairy. These are just some of the ways that I contribute to Earth’s well-being, and I continue to do just a little bit more each month.

I am grateful that we have started to have more of a green consciousness within 3HO and the Solstice Sadhana events. We will continue to share with you how we are striving to become more green in all that we do.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and offer a special thanks to the Solstice Sadhana Green Team – we appreciate your enthusiasm and motivation and are grateful to be working with you.

Happy Earth Day!

Bhajan Kaur

April 2008 Updates

Earth Day 2008: A Call for Climate

Earth Day 2008 is expected to be the biggest yet. From Tokyo to Togo, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 in over 175 countries, this year unifying millions of people behind a Call for Climate. Hundreds of events are popping up all over the globe and April 22 should be a most memorable Earth Day. Have you thought about how you are going to honor this day? We would like to encourage you to participate in a local event or organize a community project. Some ideas might be to plant trees or clean roadway litter in an area near you. Together we can also focus on Mother Earth and give thanks to the bounty and beauty she provides us with. If you have other creative ideas of how Kundalini Yogis around the world might celebrate and participate in this worldwide event, please share them with the community.

3HO International UN Office: Protecting Health from Climate Change

World Health Day, on April 7, marks the founding of the World Health Organization and is an opportunity to draw worldwide attention to a subject of major importance to global health each year. In 2008, World Health Day focuses on the need to protect health from the adverse effects of climate change. The theme Protecting Health from Climate Change puts health at the center of the global dialogue about climate change. WHO selected this theme in recognition that climate change is posing ever-growing threats to global public health security. Read more.

A Greener 2008 Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration

Led by our Green Yogis, a group of caring and dedicated Solstice participants, we are developing a conscious relationship with the sacred land of Ram Das Puri and our great Mother, the Earth. The Green Yogis have helped in purchasing earth-friendly supplies, processing waste and raising consciousness of the impact of our daily actions on the environment. Last year we reduced our solid waste significantly through composting and recycling practices. We switched to Dr. Bronner’s earth-friendly hand soap, as well as green kitchen cleaners. This year’s goals include increased use of organic food, improving bathroom setup with water-saving toilets and faucets, and offsetting the Summer Solstice carbon dioxide footprint by financing renewable energy projects and planting a tree for every Solstice participant. Learn more. There is so much to do, so if you think we could do even better, please join us, this is how we create our Solstice Sadhana Celebration!

Healing the Body, Mind and Soul

The First (Root) Chakra (Muladhara)
Foundations, Security, and Habit

The First Chakra is located at the base of the spine. One of its facets is the quality and functions of earth. Here “earth" means the final step of manifestation in the realm of the senses; the most public areas of life. It is also the most veiled to the spirit. It is the most public areas of life. It is the most deeply wrapped in the illusions of separateness, aloneness, and tangibility. It represents the functioning of the mind and emotions when we are most unconscious.

This is not bad. It is necessary. When we perform our best in any activity, a large part of that activity is automatic and unconscious. When you ride a bicycle well, you do not think of the pedals. The pedals are your focus only when you first learn to propel the bike and balance at the same time. Then the conscious action becomes an unconscious habit.

The first Chakra is the realm of habits. It is the land of automatic behavior. It is a repository of deep instinctual patterns we use for survival. Our potential for survival response is unconscious and deeply shared, regardless of intelligence, race, or age. The things stored and tapped in the First Chakra processes allow little individuality. The character of the First Chakra is to “reduce everything to the bottom line”.

The First Chakra is associated with elimination, with the anus and large intestines. From the anus, the food you eat is returned to the Earth in a digested form. With little variation, everything you eat is universalized to its base components. At the upper regions of the body you care a lot about each smell, taste, Color, texture, and sensation. By the time it comes to the Earth, it is reduced to what is common, universal and most tangible. The many subtle qualities are lost.

No chakra stands alone. They are all part of a larger cycle of evolution and devolution, manifestation and sublimation. The function of elimination and reduction is balanced by the upper areas that accumulate, create and differentiate.

Recipe

Three Types of Food

Sun foods grow more than three feet above the ground. They absorb the maximum energy from the sun and the least from the earth. These are etheric foods that elevate consciousness, and have a quickening, lightening effect on the body and nervous system.
Examples: fruits, nuts, avocados, dates, coconuts.

Ground foods grow within three feet above the ground. They have more energy from the earth, less from the sun, and are high in nutrients and are a great cleanser.
Examples: beans, rice, breads, and green vegetables.

Earth foods grow below the ground. They have great energy from the earth, and the sun energy indirectly. They have healing properties, and great energy for worldly business or hard work.
Examples: root foods: potatoes, turnips, beets, garlic, ginger, onions.

Green Diet

• A rebuilding diet, alkalinizes the body, for losing weight, clearing the skin, cleanses the liver, relieves toxic mucous conditions.
• 40 Days of green foods: salads, steamed greens, avocados, sprouts, mung beans, green fruit. (Yogi Tea okay.)
• To end the fast, add fruit, then grains, then dairy.

Kundalini Yoga

Ra Ma Da Sa Sa Se So Hong Healing Meditation

Developing the power to heal:

Sit in Easy Pose. Put your left hand on your navel point. Your right arm is by your right side, elbow bent, with the palm facing forward. You are holding your right hand up as if you are taking an oath. This meditation is done with Gurnam's RaMaDaSa, Healing Sounds tape or CD. You may either chant out loud or meditate silently. The movement of the kriya is timed with the chanting of "Raa Maa Daa Saa Saa Say So Hung" by Gurnam.

Ar "Raa", slowly begin moving your right arm forward from the starting position and continue slowly moving so that your arm is straight out in front of you with the palm facing downward at "Hung." The movement begins with "Raa" and is completed at "Hung." Then the right arm moves back to the starting position by your side and the movement begins again at "Raa." The right arm moves as if giving a blessing. Start with 11 minutes and work up to 31 Minutes. Gradually, over time, you may increase the time to a maximum practice time of 2 ½ hours.

Yogi Bhajan said that this is a meditation to practice for the rest of your life. It is a simple exercise that can give you the power to heal.

Variations for healing others:

You may do this kriya using your left hand to hold the hand of the person you want to heal. The right hand moves as described above. You may chant the mantra out loud or mentally and silently.

OR

If the person needing healing is very ill, shaking and shivering, you can place your left hand on their navel point and place your right hand on their pituitary. You may chant the mantra out loud or mentally and silently.

"People will be attracted to you like the magnet attracts iron. They will ask you for help. They are not asking "you" for help, they are asking your aura to help them. It is a different psyche... People will reach out to you because they will feel, in the presence of your arcline and aura, some calmness, some quietness where they might get to some rest. Just extend yourself...just help them to calm their inner volcano." - Yogi Bhajan -
