The Sicilian variation 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 has been the odd child of the defense for at least the last 40 years. Unlike the Najdorf or Dragon the Kan was never swayed back and forth by sacrifices of pieces or long calculated variations.
Actually, the most hotly debated topic in this line has been the name! I remember when a pamphlet on "the Paulsen Sicilian" was our only source of material on the line and the name Kan was an exotic aberration from some far-off place.
By any name the line was never the meat which our heroes partook, only solid players who were more interested in scoring wins than debating move 18 in the Sicilian. This never struck a chord with much of the chess playing public, but perhaps it has been their loss. At least, until now.
GM Hellsten explains in the preface of Play the Sicilian Kan that he had practiced the Caro Kann and Petroff early in his international career, but found a boredom in some of the positions. He was guided to the Kan because of Taimanov's work and was carried to a fascination with the line.
Hellsten was impressed by the Kan immediately because decisions of strategy and manoeuver were the core of the variation instead of analytical depth. This sounds like a great find for any player looking to have a defense to 1.e4 that provides winning opportunities as well as a solid base...
Johan Hellsten is a Grandmaster and a former Swedish Champion who has represented his country in numerous Olympiads and team tournaments. He has enjoyed many tournament successes and has won individual gold and bronze medals at the European Team Championships. He is currently employed as a chess teacher at the Sports Federation of Chimborazo, Ecuador.

Understanding the English Opening and Related Structures
by IM John Watson
Gambit, 2008 ISBN: 9781904600985
softcover, 352 pages figurine algebraic notation
There is nothing that can replace a good author. Those words rang to me and I simply agreed. With no reason to question such an assertion I simply nodded and moved on.
What makes a good author though?
It was much later that I started to form questions like this.
In chess the great authors are players who have been able to articulate what or how they think, or should think, at the board. Readers gain an insight into the intricacies of play as well as establishing a confidence in their own understanding.
To me John Watson is such a writer.
His 4-volume set on the English Opening established a standard for opening books in English that lasted for over a generation, and his work on Chigorin's Defense was a masterpiece ahead of its time.
Here we have books that educated the reader with more than merely move sequences, illuminating the depth of thought which is required to become a titled player. These were and are simply marvelous books.
The third volume of Mastering the Chess Openings is my first encounter with Mr. Watson's current series. In my opinion it certainly meets the level he had set before. In the first paragraph of the introduction Watson determines the goal: "1.c4 is not only the logical partner to 1.e4 and 1.d4, but in itself a wonderful grounds for the study of positional ideas that encompass the entire range of chess practice."
Watson's approach is to introduce a variation by touching on basics and then expand a level by explaining more complex or detailed ideas...

Business people, may I have your attention, please? Bob Rice has something to say to you that could well transform the way you work: "1.e4."
Rice is a member of the New York Angels investment consortium, and is a managing partner of Tangent Capital, which structures high-yield hedge fund investments.
He also founded the Wall Street Chess Club in 1990, and along with Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short established the Professional Chess Association (1993-1996), serving as its first commissioner. He ran PCA chess events, created a "speed chess" television series for ESPN, and produced the chess software program "Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess."
Hedge funds and speed chess? Three Moves Ahead is the intersection of Rice´s business savvy and chess enthusiasm.
As he told me in an email interview,
I really believe that only a limited knowledge of the way players think, and a few basic chess stratagems, will improve the average executive´s "game" at the office.
Having recently heard American economist (and retired International Grandmaster) Kenneth Rogoff on the radio, I had to wonder: wouldn´t one have to be at the top of the chess to be a biz whiz?
Reaching "Club player" level is fine in that sense. I think traditional "recipe for success" business book sell a false promise: in the real world of business change, randomness, and clever opponents don´t permit things like "the seven secrets for ..." or "the three keys to...." to work. Instead, executives must appreciate that they cannot, in fact, see "three moves ahead" with certainty.
Indeed, Fisher´s quote - "I don´t believe in psychology, I believe in good moves" - is even more relevant to business than it is chess...

Solution to the Position of the Week
Though this fabulous Benko creation appeared first in Chess Life, I lifted it from the most recent issue of Chess Problem Journal - Vratnica-64, #31-32, a Chess Problem Journal edited by Mr Bosko Miloseski - published in FAN with some English translations, issued quarterly in PDF format. The solution given there is:
To stimulate creativity, one must develop the childlike inclination for play and the childlike desire for recognition. - Albert Einstein
Great innovators and original thinkers and artists attract the wrath of mediocrities as lightning rods draw the flashes. - Theodor Reik
Dare to be original. The graveyard of mankind is littered with the bones and ashes of countless men too timid to express their ideas. - Source Unknown
An idea must originate from where it is. - Archil Ebralidze
Mistakes are a fact of life. It is the response to error that counts. - Nikki Giovanni
A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery. - James Joyce
Collective judgment of new ideas is so often wrong that it is arguable that progress depends on individuals being free to back their own judgment despite collective disapproval. - W. A. Lewis
In this life, stormy like a sea, there is one refuge: disdain future vicissitudes, stand dependably and openly, staunchly meet the blows of fortune, do not hide and do not flinch. - Seneca
Any coward can fight a battle when he's sure of winning, but give me the man who has pluck to fight when he's sure of losing. That's my way, sir; and there are many victories worse than a defeat. - George Eliot
My center is giving way, my Kingside is pushed back, situation excellent, I am attacking. - Marshal Ferdinand Foch
The instinct of workmanship, the thrill of vicarious struggle. - Source Unknown

The film Bobby Fischer Live, a "bio picture about the controversial life of the most famous and best chess player who has ever lived," is due for release in the US on August 1st 2009.
Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008) was an American chess Grandmaster, and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Later in life he renounced his US citizenship and became an Icelandic citizen.
As a teenager, Fischer became famous as a chess prodigy. In 1972, he won the World Chess Championship, defeating defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland. The match was widely publicized as a Cold War battle. He is often referred to as one of the greatest chess players of all time.
In 1975, Fischer did not defend his title when he could not come to
agreement with the international chess federation FIDE over the conditions for the match. He became more reclusive and played no more competitive chess until 1992, when he won a rematch against Spassky. The competition was held in Yugoslavia, which was then under a strict United Nations embargo. This led to a conflict with the US government, and he never returned to his native country.
In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-Semitic statements. During the 2004-2005 time period, after his U.S. passport was revoked, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months under threat of extradition. After Iceland granted him citizenship, the Japanese authorities released him to that country, where he lived until his death in 2008.

Ajedrez Perú: RANKING FINAL LIV Y VIII CAMPEONATO NACIONAL ABSOLUTO Y FEMENINO 2009

The Slav defense has always been a popular opening for Black, dating back to the Alekhine-Bogoljubow and Alekhine-Euwe matches. However, over the last several years the Semi-Slav has replaced it as the opening of choice amongst the world´s top players.
I myself have been playing various variations of the Slav for the past 19 years. Originally, like a lot of beginners, I started with the mainline Slav. However, for some reason the exchange variation would sometimes give me trouble. After trying the a6 Slav for a brief period, I ended up playing the Semi-Slav a few years ago and have been very pleased with it.
The interesting thing is you would think that with Black playing pawns to both c6 and e6 and blocking in his light squared bishop, there wouldn´t be that much theory to know. I mean, isn´t Black sort of playing a Colle in reverse? The answer is no-the Semi-Slav is nothing like the Colle.
While the Colle is a pretty easy opening to play (I play it), the number of variations in the Semi-Slav is quite large and the lines often run past 20 moves. Additionally, while the Colle is usually a setup to play for a kingside attack, in the Semi-Slav, Black´s play is usually on the queenside (c5 break) or center (e5 break).
Vigorito´s 277 page book is broken into 5 sections:
Part I - The Moscow Variation Part II - The Botvinnik Variation Part III - The Meran Variation Part IV - The 6.Qc2 Variation Part V - White Avoids the Main Lines
The Semi-Slav appears on the board after the following moves:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nf3 e6
The Semi-Slav is on the board!
We can learn a little here by watching two of the best in the business pick up the position from here (game 9 in the book):
This is the starting position for the Anti-Moscow Gambit. In exchange for the sacrificed pawn White has good central control and the possibility of breaking either in the centre with e4-e5 or d4-d5 or on either flank with h2-h4 or a2-a4. Black has a kind of Botvinnik position, except he is up a pawn instead of down a pawn.

Atte

CONVOCATORIA A ELECCIONES

This statement applies in full measure to the absorbing encounter that opened the 1994 Candidates Match between Viswanathan Anand and Gata Kamsky. Mark Dvoretsky believes Anand was let down by poor technique in the realization of advantages.
Erik Larsson This month The Kibitzer pays tribute to the man principally responsible for the revival of postal chess after World War Two and for turning it into a globally-organized sport: Swedish native Erik Larsson.
Tournament Prep In advance of the upcoming SuperNationals, Steve Goldberg asks a panel of players, coaches, and parents about how best to prepare for a chess tournament.
Book Notes
Winning Chess Middlegames addresses the often ignored but extremely important topic of pawn structures. With its highly accessible verbal explanations and deep analyses of top-level games, this book helps you to solve the basic problems of the middlegame: space, tension and initiative.
In An Aggressive Opening Repertoire for the Club Player, correspondence GM Nikolai Kalinichenko presents a complete opening repertoire intended for players who like to attack or for use when the competitive situation demands an aggressive approach.
In the updated and revised second edition of Let´s Play Chess, you will find the rules, the logic, some of the culture and history, and the basic principles of good chess play.
Subtitled "An Essential Guide to Pawn Structures," Sokolov examines the four most important types of pawn structure and writes that "he tried, as much as possible, to
"1. systematize the thematic plans used and give clear explanations of them, and "2. incorporate the ideas of the featured opening variation into the pawn structure that ensues."
He notes that a superior strategic understanding of a given structure allows one to successfully capitalize on your opening preparation as well as rebound from an inferior position. His aim is
"1. to provide a complete guide for the club player; "2. through a process of serious analysis of the material in this book, to also give the club player a reasonably accurate feeling as to which particular positions suit him and which do not; and "3. to give the club player who takes his time for a thorough study of this book, new strategic and also practical opening knowledge, after which he will definitely see a clear improvement in his results."
The material is divided into four chapters: Doubled Pawns, Isolated Pawns, Hanging Pawns, and Pawn Majority in the Center. Not only is this a book you should own, it is one you should use.
In this eighth Power Play DVD, GM Daniel King examines positions in which knights battle against bishops. He notes in the introduction that this is an incredibly important theme that touches upon any opening you may play. One of his aims is to equip the reader to be able to discern the true value of each piece in any given position, as the standard value of three points can only be taken as a very rough guide, since in certain positions one piece or the other is clearly superior.
He begins by showing a few simplified positions that demonstrate the main characteristics of the knights and bishops. First he presents an endgame study by Averbakh in which the bishop proves to be more useful than the knight and then an endgame study by Troitsky where the knight displays its superiority. But his discussions encompass much more than that. He also talks about various positional factors, such as pawn structure, weak squares and how to place your pawns to compliment your pieces.
This is not just for beginners, even club and tournament players will learn more than they may anticipate. King does a good job of making the material easy to understand and making complex concepts seem simple. This DVD makes for great self-training and can also be useful to coaches looking for exercise material or lesson plans.
In all there are twenty-three video segments with a running time of about four hours. No additional software is needed to run this DVD as it comes equipped with the ChessBase 9 Reader that installs onto your hard disk. If you already have CB9 or one of the Fritz family of playing programs, then you do not need to install the reader.
