Estimados amigos ajedrecistas: Hay veces hacemos cosas sin imaginarmos el tremendo compromiso que luego nos va tocar asumir. Torre 64 se inició de la nada y como tal no tenía la menor idea del pequeño monstruo que estaba creando para el ajedrez latino. Estos años han sido buenos y malos pues decir que siempre fue de color de rosa para el portal y para mi pues sería mentirme a mi mismo y a ustedes amigos ajedrecistas, algo que definitivamente va en contra de lo que me inculcaron mis padres. A todos ustedes ajedrecistas latinos, usuarios registrados y administradores del portal solo me queda decirles una cosa: Muchas gracias. A los patrocinadores también un agradecimiento especial porque gracias a ustedes este portal se mantiene en pie. Cuando esta web se inició por allá el año 2001 se llamaba www.torre64.550m.com y es muy posible que ni yo mismo supiera el porque lo estaba haciendo y peor aun el tiempo que este portal viviría. Actually, the most hotly debated topic in this line has been the name!  I remember when a pamphlet on "the Paulsen Sicilian" was our only source of material on the line and the name Kan was an exotic aberration from some far-off place. By any name the line was never the meat which our heroes partook, only solid players who were more interested in scoring wins than debating move 18 in the Sicilian.  This never struck a chord with much of the chess playing public, but perhaps it has been their loss.  At least, until now. GM Hellsten explains in the preface of Play the Sicilian Kan that he had practiced the Caro Kann and Petroff early in his international career, but found a boredom in some of the positions.  He was guided to the Kan because of Taimanov's work and was carried to a fascination with the line. Hellsten was impressed by the Kan immediately because decisions of strategy and manoeuver were the core of the variation instead of analytical depth.  This sounds like a great find for any player looking to have a defense to 1.e4 that provides winning opportunities as well as a solid base... What makes a good author though? It was much later that I started to form questions like this. In chess the great authors are players who have been able to articulate what or how they think, or should think, at the board.  Readers gain an insight into the intricacies of play as well as establishing a confidence in their own understanding. To me John Watson is such a writer. His 4-volume set on the English Opening established a standard for opening books in English that lasted for over a generation, and his work on Chigorin's Defense was a masterpiece ahead of its time. Here we have books that educated the reader with more than merely move sequences, illuminating the depth of thought which is required to become a titled player.  These were and are simply marvelous books. The third volume of Mastering the Chess Openings is my first encounter with Mr. Watson's current series.  In my opinion it certainly meets the level he had set before.  In the first paragraph of the introduction Watson determines the goal: "1.c4 is not only the logical partner to 1.e4 and 1.d4, but in itself a wonderful grounds for the study of positional ideas that encompass the entire range of chess practice." Watson's approach is to introduce a variation by touching on basics and then expand a level by explaining more complex or detailed ideas... Bobby Fischer Live Trailer Posted: 29 May 2009 09:15 PM PDT The film Bobby Fischer Live, a "bio picture about the controversial life of the most famous and best chess player who has ever lived," is due for release in the US on August 1st 2009. Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (March 9, 1943 - January 17, 2008) was an American chess Grandmaster, and the eleventh World Chess Champion. Later in life he renounced his US citizenship and became an Icelandic citizen. As a teenager, Fischer became famous as a chess prodigy. In 1972, he won the World Chess Championship, defeating defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland. The match was widely publicized as a Cold War battle. He is often referred to as one of the greatest chess players of all time. In 1975, Fischer did not defend his title when he could not come to agreement with the international chess federation FIDE over the conditions for the match. He became more reclusive and played no more competitive chess until 1992, when he won a rematch against Spassky. The competition was held in Yugoslavia, which was then under a strict United Nations embargo. This led to a conflict with the US government, and he never returned to his native country. In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-Semitic statements. During the 2004-2005 time period, after his U.S. passport was revoked, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months under threat of extradition.
