Thanks to Zooropa777 for the following condensed
from The Seattle Times:

Kingdome looms large in Seattle's concert history

As a special tribute to the ol' Kingdome, we've dredged up a
selection of reviews from rock concerts there. Most of those
shows had big problems with that "Kingdome echo," but it's a
stellar list of concerts nonetheless. Seattle Times critic Patrick
MacDonald was at that first concert with Paul McCartney, and
at the last one with U2. All these excerpts are from his reviews,
except where indicated.

December 1997, U2

It was a night of lasts. The last rock 'n' roll show in the Kingdome
and the last night in America for U2's "Pop Mart Tour." And what
a fine last night it was.

Lead singer Bono, his vocal problems apparently over, was in
classic form, and the huge extravaganza fit the Dome nicely. The
mammoth video screen was amazing, projecting close-up shots of
the band in action interspersed with incredible, artful visual effects.
And the sound was the best ever in the Kingdome, surpassing even
the recent Rolling Stones show.

The night had a festive air. Bono interacted with the crowd much
more than at the band's Eugene show last May, using a long
extension of the stage to get down close to the fans . . .

Explaining - or perhaps apologizing for - the glitzy presentation, he
told the crowd, "We wanted to turn a casino into a cathedral."

Thanks to Philp Gratz for the following:

At Tuesday night's concert in Ann Arbour, Michigan, Luka
Bloom said that he was going to play a song by his favorite
dublin ballad writers and then launched into "bad"... he
had arranged the chords to fit his own style, so I didnt
recognize it at first, but then he sang the word "if" and
I went nuts!

POPULARITY. Polls taken by radio stations in the Mexican Republic about
which were the groups and rock songs that had the most repercussion
worldwide concluded that the song 'One', by the famous Irish group U2
was number one. It was followed on the list by The Beatles and Pink
Floyd, with 10 songs in each case, The Rolling Stones and The Cure with
seven musical themes each, The Doors and Nirvana, with five and four,
respectively. Curiously, 'The King of Rock" Elvis Presley doesn't
figure on this list.

They're Hotshots Now: Irish rock group U2 received the symbolic Freedom
of the City award in Dublin Saturday in recognition of its achievements
in the music world, and singer Bono and bandmate the Edge lost no time
in exercising one of their newly granted privileges: to graze sheep on a
city park. The two turned up on Stephen's Green on Sunday carrying lambs
borrowed from friends. The Freedom of the City law, established in 1454,
also grants the right to possess a coat of chain-mail armor, a bow and a

"U2 STOLE THIS SONG FROM THE MANSON FAMILY,
NOW WE'RE STEALING IT BACK!"

-- British popsters Oasis seem absolutely bent on convincing the world -
or maybe just themselves - that they are the living, breathing
reincarnation of the Beatles. To that end, the B-side of their next UK
single Who Feels will be a cover of the Beatles' Helter Skelter, made
(in)famous first by Charlie Manson and his clan and then by U2, who
preciously announced on their 1988 album Rattle & Hum that they were
stealing it back from the Mansons.

Maybe they should have hung onto it a little tighter.

The Million Dollar Hotel/ soundtrack (Island)
Rating three 1/2 out of four

Maybe the universe does unfold the way it should. Now that Bono and U2
are no longer gods of chunder but simply artists who can occasionally
achieve musical brilliance, they're free to wander the streets without a
brand name. Like this soundtrack for a new film by Wim Wenders, where
they appear as U2, Bono & friends and as part of MDH (the stellar
Million Dollar Hotel band, which includes others like Daniel Lanois,
Bill Frissell, Brian Eno and ultra-cool trumpeter Jon Hassell). The mood
is more moody translucent than rock transcendent, blue indigo
instrumentals and lyrics flashing like a neon sign outside a hotel
window, framing sad lovers as they listen to Miles, Lou Reed
and Bono too.

Music Preview: Celtic singer Luka Bloom makes his
way back from a major-label exile

Friday, March 24, 2000

By Scott Mervis, Weekend Editor, Post-Gazette

"When I first came to America," he says, "I had this sort of
postpunk vision, and what it basically was, was having listened
to early Simple Minds, the Clash, U2 and those kind of acts,
I got this dream in my mind of creating this style of
performance that was wild enough that I could make people
pay attention. Because 12, 13 years ago, people were saying to
me, 'No one's interested in male singer-songwriters.' I was just
determined to do something completely different. I had a style
of performance that was very in-your-face.

"But I think you have to evolve. If you look at the difference
between U2 now and in the early '80s, if they were to continue
making every album like 'October,' 'Boy' and 'War,' people
would be completely sick of them by now. You can't spend
your whole life looking for attention. I can't keep playing the
same song over and over."

The Pope's musical tour

The Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus are beginning
an unusual concert tour - on behalf of the Pope.

Pope hits

The Pope is no stranger to musical ventures- he has
been recorded singing and has already released a
couple of music CDs.

His most recent release Abba Pater - a sort of papal
bid to capture the youth market - had him rapping
religious texts over pop and dance music.

According to those in the know, the Pope is no
musical stick-in-the-mud.

He likes to wear Doctor Martin boots around the
Vatican - has had audiences with a variety of pop
stars in the past.

He persuaded Bob Dylan to sing to a Bishops'
convention in Bologna.

And at the end of last year, after meeting Bono, the
lead singer of the pop group U2, the Pope made off
with the pop star's trademark sunglasses.

U2 Singer Bono and His Hotel Music

When Bono participated in a webchat on 12 March, two million internet
users decided to join him. When he was appointed an honour citizen of
his hometown Dublin a few days later, 11,000 fans were happy to join
him there too. Wherever Bono goes, people celebrate his presence. So
was the situation when he attended the opening of the Berlinale to
present Wim Wendersí film "The Million Dollar Hotel," featuring Mel
Gibson
in one of the lead roles. U2 have produced two new pieces for the
soundtrack.
For the melancholy, beautiful single "The Ground Beneath Feet" the band
make use of lyrics by author Salman Rushdie. Bono wrote three other
songs
for ìThe Million Dollar Hotelî soundtrack, which features Brian Eno on
the
keyboard. Also model/actress Milla Jovovich contributes with her
interpretation
of Lou Reedís classic " Satellite of Love." The result: The film's
music is as
beautiful as the film.

to stop the band now.

From The New York Daily News:

A U2 Salute for U.S.

His rock majesty Bono has deigned to give America a compliment. The U2
singer apparently used to think of our country as a dim hag with a
drug problem. But now, he declares: "I see an America that's
rehabilitated
in a way that was unimaginable to me 10 years ago. Now America
looks smart and, dare I say it, sexy again."

Bono, who has spent much of last year lobbying to get countries to
forgive
$70 billion in Third World debt, also says in the April issue of George
that he
has changed his mind about politicians.

"I have actually sat with people in bands who describe politicians as
the
Antichrist," he says. But Bono argues that the pols "go home really
late.
If they went into business, they'd be a lot wealthier. We should pay
them
more and expect more from them. I have to confess, I've got a respect
for them."

Paying respect to Bono, George is giving him its first annual Save the
World award. Other showbiz honorees include Michael Douglas, Tom
Hanks, Gillian Anderson and Charlton Heston.

Lou Reed at the May Day Concert

Lou Reed will be one of the main guests for the May Day
Concert in Rome next 1 may! This year the event will
have place in Tor Vergata, not as previous years in St.
Giovanni Square! This date will be under The Jubileum
calendar...the big concert, which will expect 1.000.000
people, will have as main theme "Free Debt" supporting
the jubilee2000 campaign! Lou reed is an important name
in a list of an international billboard that could have
also Bono and U2. The band is friend of the old rocker! For
Reed that's an intense moment, his new album will
be out next avril, a job strongly influenced by the happy
relation with Laurie Anderson.

A collection of songs with emotionals pieces, travel through
the love, the fear, the discovery of the doubt.

Poetry and rock' n' roll as usual...Lou Reed in his greatest form.

Soundtracks

Various Artists The Million Dollar Hotel (Interscope)

For anyone pondering U2's next move, this soundtrack (to a
Wim Wenders film based on a Bono short story)
provides a few clues. Their three contributions, including a
pointless remake of "The Frist Time," for go ersatz
techno for a return to their grander, airier, pre-Achtung Baby
sound-albeit with droopier material. The rest is
either admirable but dull (ambient instrumentals featuring
trumpeter Jon Hassell) or simply dull (actress Milla
Jovovich's "Satellite of Love"). Check out anytime you like.

THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL : ORIGINAL
SOUNDTRACK (ISLAND) ***

A bit of a mixed bag this one. Featuring two new U2 tracks
along with a heap of Bono and some other odds and ends, it's
an album with a few wonderful moments. The U2 stuff is
impressively subdued and moving, particularly the very decent
Salman Rushdie penned The Ground Beneath Her Feet. But
there's far too much pointless soundtrack filler.

From CNN WorldBeat:

(Cindy's Note: This article is amusing because it incorrectly reports
that
U2 held lambs in their arms during the Freedom of the City award
ceremony.)

Dublin Honors Lamb-Wielding U2

DUBLIN, Ireland -- Local heroes U2 have been given Dublin's highest
honor,
joining the ranks of U.S. President John Kennedy and Pope John Paul II
as
Freemen of Dublin.

Lord Mayor Mary Freehill this weekend presided over the official
ceremony that
honored Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, and band manager
Paul
McGuinness, the news service reported.

They held lambs in their arms, a symbolic gesture noting that past
recipients of the
award were given rights to pasture sheep on St. Stephen's Green.

"U2 placed Dublin on the map as an attractive destination for many young
music
lovers," Freehill said. "Despite their international success they
continue to live,
record and plan their world-class campaigns here. The band is always
quick to
support the city's charities and cultural initiatives."

She presented the recipients with crystal replicas of Joshua trees. The
band
released the album "The Joshua Tree" in 1987.

The city named a sixth recipient: Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace
Prize-winning
leader of the Burmese democracy movement, now under house arrest in
Rangoon.
Her son, Kim Aris, accepted the award.

Following the ceremony, U2 performed a short impromptu concert to an
estimated
11,000 fans who'd gathered in the city center for the ceremony.

That prompted a joke from new Freeman Bono: "I'd have thought people
would be
sick of U2 by now."

(U2News Note: Once again, we would like to clarify that the stalking
incident
that Bono mentioned in the Hot Press interview occurred in the past. As
far
as we know, he is not currently being threatened by anyone.)

Bono Latest Target for Stalker

Bono has claimed that he and the rest of U2 are targets of an 'armed and
dangerous' stalker in their hometown of Dublin. He told Ireland's Hot
Press
magazine, 'I don't want to get into names or places because it can be an
ongoing problem, but let's say I and the office of U2 have had
experience
of armed and dangerous stalkers.'

This comes in the week U2 were awarded the Freedom Of The City.
worldpop has recently reported that Madonna, Mariah Carey and Whitney
Houston have all been the target of stalkers in what appears to be a
growing problem.

New & Noteworthy
Column by Eileen Murphy

On our way out of the party [for the new Broadway production
of Riverdance], we ran into U2 manager Paul McGuinness, who
also reps "Riverdance" composer Bill Whelan.

So, when's the new U2 album coming out? we wondered.

"In September," he revealed.

And what will it sound like?

"It'll sound like U2," he laughed, before growing serious. "A bit
more back to basics. No machines."

We asked him about being awarded the Freedom of Dublin City
with the rest of U2. The award carries with it a special Waterford
Crystal trophy in the shape of the Joshua Tree, plus a few other
privileges.

"Well, it's a great honor, of course," he said solemnly. "In practical
terms, it means that I could graze my sheep in St. Stephen's Green if
I had a mind to.

Anything else?

"And in College Green, as well."

Anything else?

"Of course, it would be great if I could do something about parking
fines . . ." he said with a wicked grin. Not that he has any -- the
guy's
got a full-time driver, natch.

From USA Today:

POP/ROCK: The Million Dollar Hotel ( * * * 1/2) Fans panting for U2's
10th
studio album, not due till later this year, can whet their appetites by
checking into
The Million Dollar Hotel, a soundtrack to the upcoming Wim Wenders film
based
in part on a story by singer Bono. The Irish band submits a retooled The
First
Time, the grand Stateless and first single The Ground Beneath Her Feet,
a
gorgeous pop ballad with lyrics from Salman Rushdie's book of the same
name.
Departing from the techno-shaded Achtung Baby and Pop, U2 backtracks to
old-fashioned romance and drama. The 16-track album, recorded in Dublin
and
produced by Hal Willner, relies largely on the seductive and atmospheric
sound of
the Million Dollar Band, featuring Bono, Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, Bill
Frisell and
others. Without straying from a mood of enticing melancholy, the
ensemble
manages surprising breadth, from the ambient instrumentals to Hotel star
Milla
Jovovich's tense take on Lou Reed's Satellite of Love to a blustery
Spanish-language, pond-hopping remake of the Sex Pistols' Anarchy in the
U.K.
(now Anarchy in the USA), sung by Tito Larriva. -- Edna Gundersen

U2 Targeted By Armed Stalker

U2 frontman Bono has revealed that he and the band are
the targets of an "armed and dangerous" stalker in Dublin.
The singer told Ireland's Hot Press magazine that "I don't

ongoing problem, but let's say I and the office of U2 have

revelation came alongside U2's latest honor - the group

currently working on its next album with producers and
Daniel Lanois, with an expected release this fall.
