MIDDLETOWN BUDDHIST CALENDAR

Spring Theme
Everyday Buddhism & Faith

05/03. The Inner Freedom of Shin. A discussion of the path of self acceptance,
trust and compassion through various profound verses of Shinran Shinran, the
founder of Shin Buddhism. This will be a highly spiritual discussion exploring
inner transformation, light and true freedom within our limitations. Presented
by James Schneider.

05/10. Mother's Day. No Wesleyan gathering. Our practice is to honor and be with
our grandmothers, mothers, wives. Our 06/01 discussion on the practice of Naikan
will honor the role of motherhood.

05/17. Does Art Imitate Life or Life Imitate Art? Does Buddhism recognize any
distinction between the two? Join us as we explore Buddhism's perspective on the
creative process. We will focus on poetry as well as shodo (Japanese)
calligraphy, an example of which if featured on our nembutsu scroll. Also, we
will pause to recognize and celebrate Gotan-e, Shinran Shonin's (founder of Shin
Buddhism) birthday. Presented by Pamela Mulready.

05/24. The Power of Now. We are not our mind; we can find our way out of
psychological pain; authentic human power is found by surrendering to the Now.
In the present moment, problems do not exist, we are able to find joy and
embrace our true selves and find ourselves perfect and complete. Short readings
from the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. Presented by Juliane Dean.

05/31. Memorial Day and Wisteria Festival Picnic. No Wesleyan gathering. This is
our annual holiday(s) picnic honoring the ultimate sacrifice of our servicemen
and women, and the buddhist holiday known as Fujimatsuri, celebrating the birth
of Shinran Shonin, the 13th century religious reformer and founder of Shin
Buddhism. This is a potluck event which includes games and dance. Family and
friends are invited. This is a wonderful way to start off the summer season.
