El glosario de CMMI define Software Engineering, o Ingeniería de Software como:
(1) The application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable
approach to the development, operation, and maintenance
of software. (2) The study of approaches as in (1). (See also
“hardware engineering,” and “systems engineering.”)
Y define Systems Engineering, o Ingeniería de Sistemas, como:
The interdisciplinary approach governing the total technical
and managerial effort required to transform a set of
customer needs, expectations, and constraints into a
product solution and to support that solution throughout the
product’s life. (See also “hardware engineering” and
“software engineering.”)
¿Cuál es la diferencia? Ingeniería de Sistemas contempla la creación de sistemas que pueden o no contener software. Pensá, por ejemplo,
en soluciones manuales a procesos de negocio. O en proyectos de defensa, que suelen incluir el diseño y construcción de componentes de hardware y de software.
La Ingeniería de Software es más restrictiva, y se refiere sólo al desarrollo, operación y mantenimiento de software. No contempla
necesariamente otros componentes.

estoy muy interesada de entender inicialmente cuales son las
diferencias claras entre Ingeniería de Sistemas e Ingeniería de
Software, clasificación realizada en CMMi V1.1. Les agradezco
