We wanted to let you know about an exciting new OSA Foundation (OSAF) program. The OSAF, in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of the USA, have recently published Lighten Up! Discovering the Science of Light, an activity booklet that helps introduce girls ages 11 through 15 to optics.

Through fun, hands-on activities such as making their own sunset in a bottle, using Jell-O to understand how lenses work, and even making their own telescope, girls will learn about the exciting world of optics, and why it is so important to everyday life. The guide also shows girls how the concepts they are learning relate to current research that impacts them today, and career profiles to highlight some of the many job opportunities in the field. Introducción

El Simposio Peruano de Física, SPF, es el evento más importante que realiza la Sociedad Peruana de Física (SOPERFI). Esta actividad la realiza con una periodicidad bienal y en estrecha colaboración con la Escuela de Física de una Universidad Peruana. El primer SPF se realizó en la ciudad de Lima en abril de 1975, en colaboración con la Escuela de Física de la Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería.

A continuación se muestran las fechas más importantes en relación a la formalización de inscripciones, entrega de trabajos, etc. para participar en el Simposio:

15  abril  Convocatoria nacional del XVI Simposio Peruano de Física
15 de abril   Publicación de afiches (pueden  solicitar ejemplares para difusión).
15  mayo al 15 de agosto  Promoción del Simposio en Facultades y Escuelas de Física de las      Universidades
01 de setiembre  Fecha límite de presentación de resúmenes para que aparezcan en el Libro de Resúmenes.
15 de setiembre   Fecha límite de entrega de trabajos.
14 de octubre    Recepción de participantes nacionales y extranjeros.
14 y 15 de octubre   Inscripción.

CRONOGRAMA DE ACTIVIDADES

- A1: Reunión del Capítulo el día lunes 20 de agosto para la
demostración del kit sobre cristales líquidos donado por la Universidad de
Rochester.

- A2: Reunión del Capítulo el día lunes 13 de agosto para organizar la
participación del Capítulo en la Feria E-Quipu.

- A2: Participación en la 2da Feria E-Quipu (Campus PUCP) entre los días
22 y 24 de agosto del 2007.

- A3: Reunión del Capítulo el día 28 de agosto para la organización de
la Feria de Óptica.

- A3: Realización de la "Feria de Óptica" para estudiantes de colegios
secundarios en el
Campus de la PUCP. En dicho evento se presentarán una serie de experimentos de
óptica, así como se efectuará una visita a los Laboratorios de Óptica de la
Sección Física.

- A4: Enviar un artículo a la revista E-Quipu sobre el Capítulo (antes
del 3 de septiembre).

- A5: Participación de un delegado del Capítulo en la 91va Reunión Anual
de la OSA y del evento Frontier on Optics, a realizarse entre el 16 y 20 de
septiembre en la ciudad de San José, California, Estados Unidos. En dicho
evento, habrá una sesión especial para todos los delegados de los capítulos de
la OSA provenientes de diversos países, donde incluirán talleres de
entrenamiento en óptica y de entrega de materiales diversos para enseñanza.

- A6: Realización de las 10 visitas a los colegios de educación
secundaria, dentro del marco del programa "Óptica en casa", en el cual se hará
una demostración de simples experimentos de luz, color, polarización,
formación de imágenes, hologramas, fibra óptica, cristales líquidos, usando
también el kit "Optics Discovery" de la OSA y los materiales implementados por
los propios integrantes del Capítulo, como el telémetro láser, el
caleidoscopio, el estereoscopio, el espectroscopio e ilusiones ópticas.

- A7: Participación de los integrantes del Capítulo con trabajos de
investigación en el próximo evento académico, el XI Simposio Nacional de
Estudiantes de Física, organizado por la Universidad Nacional Pedro Ruiz
Gallo, en la ciudad de Lambayeque entre los días 9 y 13 de octubre del
presente año.

- A8: Participación de los integrantes del Capítulo con trabajos de
investigación en el
próximo evento académico, el XVI Simposio Peruano de Física, organizado por la
Sociedad Peruana de Física y la Universidad de Piura, en la ciudad de Piura,
entre los

- A9: El Capítulo de Estudiantes de la OSA-PUCP co-organizará
conjuntamente con la
Red Peruana de Óptica, el Grupo de Óptica Aplicada de la PUCP y el Capítulo de
Estudiantes del SPIE de la PUCP, la próxima edición de la Reunión Peruana de
Óptica (RPO) como evento paralelo al Simposio Peruano de Física entre los días
17 y 18 de Octubre, en la ciudad de Piura.     
    

- A10: Reunión de coordinación del Capítulo para la co-organización de
las actividades que llevará a cabo en el marco del Simposio de Física y dentro
de la Reunión Peruana de Óptica. Se tiene previsto la exposición de una serie
de experimentos así como de una charla sobre la OSA y sobre las actividades
que el Capítulo realiza. Además, se coordinará sobre los detalles de la visita
del Prof. José Sasián, invitado del Capítulo.

- A10: El Capítulo de Estudiantes de la OSA-PUCP ha invitado al Prof. 
Dr. José Sasián del College on Optical Sciences de la Universidad de Arizona,
EE.UU, quien dictará seminarios sobre diseño de instrumentos ópticos para
astronomía y hablará sobre su experiencia como consultor en empresas de
innovación de tecnología óptica.

Optics Express, Optics Letters Top-Rated Journals in 2006

WASHINGTON, June 27—The Optical Society of America (OSA) is pleased to announce that based on "impact factor," or the number of citations compared to the number of papers published, its journals Optics Express and Optics Letters are the most heavily cited journals in optics. According to the 2006 Journal Citation Report®, the Thomson Scientific rankings for journal citations, these two publications received the highest impact factor rankings of all optics journals. Optics Express was the first ranked journal, followed by Optics Letters. Thomson Scientific, a business of The Thomson Corporation, announces these rankings annually, and they serve as an industry standard in gauging the notability of research published in peer-reviewed journals.

OSA publishes four other journals that ranked in the top 15 overall. These include the Journal of Lightwave Technology (6), Journal of the Optical Society of America A (11) and B (11) and Applied Optics (13). With the exception of the Journal of the Optical Society of America B, each of the journal rankings increased in stature compared to the 2005 report. The rankings in the optics category evaluate a total of 55 journals.

"OSA journals set the standard of excellence in the field of optics and photonics, and the ISI rankings verify their impact year after year," said Joseph H. Eberly, president, OSA. The Journal Citation Report provides quantitative tools for ranking, evaluating, categorizing and comparing journals. Created by ISI®, the impact factor is one of these tools; it is a measure of the frequency with which the "average article" in a journal has been cited in a particular year or period. The annual Journal Citation Reportimpact factor is a ratio between citations and recent citable items published. Thus, the impact factor of a journal is calculated by dividing the number of current year citations to the source items published in that journal during the previous two years.

These impact factor rankings have become an increasingly important tool for librarians and educators in the last several years as a way to differentiate between many journals on the same subject. The rankings are often used to select which journals to include in library collections and to assist in academic evaluation of researchers.

El Capítulo de Estudiantes de Óptica OSA-PUCP                co-organizará la Cuarta Reunión Peruana de Óptica

 

La Cuarta Reunión Peruana de Óptica 2007 se llevará a cabo el 17 y 18 de octubre en paralelo con el XVI Simposio Peruano de Física, en la ciudad de Piura. En dicho evento, la Reunión de Óptica será co-organizada conjuntamente con la Red Peruana de Óptica, el Grupo de Óptica Aplicada de la PUCP, el Capítulo de Estudiantes de Óptica de la OSA-PUCP y el Capítulo de Estudiantes SPIE de la PUCP.

Este año la edición anual de la Reunión Peruana de Óptica se realizará en paralelo con el evento académico más importante de la física en el Perú, el Simposio Peruano de Física, que espera congregar a un gran número de participantes de todo el país.

Gracias a una subvención de la Optical Society of America (OSA), el Capítulo de Estudiantes OSA-PUCP financiará la participación de integrantes del capítulo en dichos eventos, con el fin de difundir los trabajos de investigación relacionados con la óptica, láseres y sus aplicaciones, que se realizan en el Laboratorio de Óptica de la PUCP.

Gracias a dicha subvención además, se tiene previsto que el Prof. Dr. José Sasián del College on Optical Sciences de la Universidad de Arizona (EE.UU) participe como conferencista invitado en las sesiones plenarias de dichos eventos.

The SPIE President Dr. Brian Culshaw will visit us between Tuesday 16th October and Saturday 20th October. After he will travel to Brazil for participating in the RIAO/OPTILAS Conference. 

This visit shall be possible using the SPIE Traveling Lecturer Program 2007.

Dr. Brian Culshaw will participate in our "Fourth Peruvian Meeting on Optics" co-organized by the Peruvian Network on Optics, the Applied Optics Group of the PUCP, the SPIE Student Chapter and the OSA Student Chapter.

Brian Culshaw was born in Lancashire, England on 24 September 1945. He graduated from University College London with a First Class Honours Degree in Physics in 1966 and a PhD in Electrical Engineering in 1970. He has held appointments at Cornell University (1970), Bell Northern Research, Ottawa, Canada (1971-1973), University College London (1974-1983) Stanford University (1982) and has been Professor of Electronics at Strathclyde University since September 1983 where he has set up the Optoelectronics Division within the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and has acted as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Culshaw is also a founding director of OptoSci Ltd. which was established in 1994 with the primary objective of exploiting innovative optical technologies developed within Strathclyde University.

The Optoelectronics Division comprises about 30 active research workers pursuing activities in guided wave optical devices and systems, specifically optical sensor techniques, optical fibre components, optical communications and switching network studies and optical instrumentation. The work has been supported by a wide variety of agencies including government, industrial organisations both in the UK and abroad.

Professor Culshaw's personal research activities have centred upon optical fibre sensor system and network studies and novel technologies for optical fibre instrumentation including pressure measurement systems, strain and temperature measuring systems, gyroscopes and structural assessment techniques. He has also been involved in journal and book publishing in both editorial and author roles. He has served as a Director of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering based in Bellingham, Washington and has acted as consultant to numerous industrial and government organisations including in the role of company director.

He has published in excess of 300 technical papers, several conference proceedings, 7 textbooks and a dozen patents.

El Capítulo de estudiantes de Óptica de la Optical Society of America (OSA) de la PUCP, invita a las charlas del Profesor Silvano Donati de la Universidad de Pavia, Italia, quien disertará acerca los siguientes temas:

1: "Instrumentación Electro Óptica: retos y tendencias"

Esta charla es una introducción a la instrumentación electro-óptica. Se presenta una breve descripción de los más significativos logros y desarrollos, desde los primeros telémetros hasta los más sofisticados giroscopios que vienen siendo el núcleo de las unidades de navegación, desde los velocímetros hasta los analizadores del tamaño de partículas. Estos ejemplos indican como los instrumentos electro-ópticos han llegado a ser los impulsadores en la ciencia de la medición y han ganado aceptación general en aplicaciones de ingeniería. Comentarios sobre las tendencias y perspectivas acerca de este tema concluirán la charla.

2: "Interferometría de Auto-Mezclado y sus aplicaciones"

La presentación empieza con la introducción a los diferentes esquemas de interferometría y en particular, la configuración de Auto-mezclado (SM) con sus características especiales. Luego se presenta una revisión de aplicaciones del SM para una variedad de mediciones, con esquemas de operación y sus respectivos resultados obtenidos. Dos tipos de  medidas  son consideradas: mecánicas (desplazamiento, distancia, vibración, ángulo) y físicas (ecos ópticos remotos, atenuación óptica, longitud de coherencia y factor de calidad). Se seguirá con el principio de operación de los SM discutiendo las aplicaciones y se presentarán los resultados experimentales de su funcionamiento.

3: "Sensores de Fibra Óptica: Tipos, Lecturas, desempeños"

En primer lugar la exposición presenta un esquema para describir y clasificar los sensores de fibra óptica (OFS) de acuerdo a los mecanismos transductores, cantidades físicas involucradas y tipos de lecturas ópticas. Luego, se hará una revisión de los trabajos  más exitosos que han sido desarrollados hasta ahora y construidos sobre la base de los OFS. Entre ellas tenemos para las medidas mecánicas (fuerza, esfuerzo, presión), térmicas (temperatura), eléctricas (corriente y voltaje), y químicas (pH, pO2). También se discutirá el esquema de trabajo y los resultados obtenidos. Finalmente, se reportará brevemente sobre los OFS distribuidos y multiplexados así como sobre esquemas avanzados.

Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Peru OSA Student Chapter Awarded Educational Outreach Grant

The Optical Society of America Foundation (OSAF) is pleased to announce that the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Peru OSA Student Chapter has been awarded an Educational Outreach Grant in support of their two-day program for students from local schools. They have designed a workshop consisting different experiments foucsed on polarization, imaging, color, diffraction, geometrical optics, interference and optical illusions that use simple materials and easy to follow instructions. The workshop will be held at the university and two hundred high school students and teachers are expected to attend. 

OSA Student Chapters work closely with community schools and local community groups designing programs that include hands-on demonstrations, teacher guides, lesson plans, lab tours, mentoring programs, and much more. These programs take place throughout the year in countries around the globe.

Advancing youth science education is also a priority area of the OSA Foundation. Each year it funds annual Education Outreach Grants to support the work of chapters and sections. In 2007, forty-one grants were awarded.

As part of this program chapter members will visit 10 high schools,  located in Lima's suburbs. The schools were chosen based on their lack of resources and training with regard to optics. Students and teachers will be shown a series of simple optics experiments. Following the visit, the chapter will donate an optics kit full of experiments and materials allowing the teacher to continue the students exploration and learning. 

OSA Student Chapters work closely with community schools and local community groups designing programs that include hands-on demonstrations, teacher guides, lesson plans, lab tours, mentoring programs, and much more. These programs take place throughout the year in countries around the globe.

CURSO INTERNACIONAL SOBRE LASERES

A partir del próximo lunes el Dr. René Farcy del Laboratoire Aimé Cotton y la Universidad de París Sud XI (Orsay, Francia) dictará el curso "Aplicaciones de los láseres" los dias 23, 25, 27 de abril y 2 de mayo, de 5-8 pm. El curso abarca teoria del laser y aplicaciones del mismo con énfasis en LIDAR e instrumentos usadoS para hacer diferentes tipos de detecciones atmosféricas y/o de medio ambiente.

Asimismo en los días 24, 26, 28 de abril dirigirá el "Taller de diseño óptico" usando el software OSLO.

Se ha previsto un pre-taller el sabado 21 de abril.

Este ciclo consistirá de charlas pedagógicas y avanzadas sobre
física cuántica, simulación en sistemas físicos, relatividad
especial, información cuántica, inteligencia artificial, y redes
neuronales. Estos temas pertenecen a la investigación de punta a
nivel internacional y son parte de la especialización y contribución
científica de los expositores. El ciclo está orientado a estudiantes
avanzados de pregrado, estudiantes de posgrado y profesionales que
se interesen por profundizar sus conocimientos en temas relacionados.

Los interesados deberán enviar un correo electrónico sucinto, hasta
el día 20 de febrero, solicitando su inscripción a
enrique.solano@... indicando su nombre, grado/estudios,
institución en la que estudia/trabaja, y sus áreas de investigación
y/o interés. Se les comunicará a la brevedad posible su inscripción,
junto con información adicional y el auditorio respectivo. El Prof.
