Comedian Russell Brand, involved with Ross in making obscene phone calls to actor Andrew Sachs, is just behind in the rankings. Director David Furnish said Brand looked loathsome, like "a drag queen on acid".

Gordon Brown is third worst with author Irvine Welsh saying: "He seems like he's dressed by his mother rather than his wife."

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is also included in the men's category. GQ's Jonathan Heaf said Ms Smith's style screams "Olympic official".

Elton and Billy: Together. Again. Once More.

March 31st, 2009 at 4:57 pm by Amanda Schurr · No Comments

In a press release received yesterday, Elton John and Billy Joel announced the latest stop in their "Face to Face" Tour.
There´s good reason this may as well be dubbed The Piano Men Who Would Not Retire Road Spectacular: Billboard calls the tour "the most successful touring package of all time."
Again, with good reason: Tickets for the Rose Garden´s Nov. 10 performance start at $51.50 for the nosebleeds and will set you back $177.50 for the primo spots (plus service charges, natch). This fall´s date marks the pop legends´ first Portland gig together since Jan. 2001.

Elton John has complimented British rapper DJ Ironik on his recent sampling of "Tiny Dancer". Ironik uses the track on his own "Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)", which features singer Chipmunk.

DJ Ironik said: "Elton actually called my manager to say he loved the track and that he was a fan of my music. I love the old-school stuff and I've always been into sampling it."

The DJ also said John left the door open for a future collaboration. John stated: "It could be a possibility that the two of us do something. It would be massive. I've only let Tupac and Kanye West sample my stuff. That shows how high I rate Ironik."

Billy Joel edges out Elton John in double-header

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - On the surface, it always has seemed like a natural pairing: two of the rock era's most successful acts -- piano-based or otherwise -- dispensing hit after hit after hit.
But look a little deeper and the contrasts between Elton John and Billy Joel far outweigh the similarities. And their latest Face 2 Face arena show Saturday at Anaheim's Honda Center again hammered home those differences, even as the packed house cheered the pop feast.
The most obvious is the performing styles. Both men still have a command of their instrument, but their manic stage days are behind them. And that's fine; John turned 62 last Wednesday, and Joel hits 60 in May.
But latter-day John is all about the music, mostly sitting stoically at his piano; Joel's still about the show, his eighty-eight on a rotator so that every in-the-round patron got a good look. John prefers a quiet dignity onstage, only occasionally addressing the audience; Joel is demonstrative, offering some rimshot-worthy shtick.
Basically, John plays to the crowd; Joel feeds off it. So while Sir Elton will never cede the catalog crown, in his stage battle with the kid from Long Island, the latter continues to win the Face 2 Faceoffs.
John's voice for years was one of the most distinctive in rock. He sounded fine Saturday and still can sing with power, but that instantly recognizable bite is gone. He was at his best during the many slow songs, when his pipes weren't forced to keep pace with the music; "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," for example, was a kitten compared to its beastly original.
So John's solo set was heavy with ballads, which certainly isn't a bad thing. Those irresistible sing-along choruses wrap around often moving verses on topics of joy or pain, cryptic or barefaced, while he piles on the marvelous melodies. Highlights included the mournful "Daniel" and a superbly elongated "Rocket Man."
Joel happily dispensed his hits and nonhits with aplomb and a winning joviality. He introduced "Zanzibar" by saying: "This is what they called an 'album cut,'" emphasizing the quote marks with his fingers. "I don't know if you remember 'albums.'"
Joel's portion included a couple of gratuitous nods to the tour stop; "The River of Dreams" was broken up by non sequitur verse of "California Girls," and earlier, while performing with John, "My Life" opened with a few bars of "California Here I Come." But his good humor was infectious. A video screen flashed quick images during "We Didn't Start the Fire"; when he got to the line "England has a new queen," there's was a picture of Sir Elton. Zing!
John's chart success and critical acceptance have put him closer to the pop stratosphere of his countrymen the Beatles, while Joel has labored in the mode of fellow New Yorker Neil Diamond: a hitmaker with a passionate following who couldn't win over the critics. But their shared show renders itself critic-proof by virtue of its sheer value for the money, especially today. Consider this: The crowd got almost three dozen songs -- including 16 top 10 singles and four No. 1s (17 and five if you count "Candle in the Wind"), only one of them post-'80s and many delivered note-for-note -- over an intermissionless three hours and 20 minutes. And still, it was easy to lament what they didn't play.
Never has that key line from Joel's "Piano Man," which closed the show as a piano duet with John, been so apropos: It's them they were coming to see to forget about life for a while.

Elton John´s "Can you feel the love tonight" - Langsamer Walzer oder nicht?

Nach all dem Suchen hier also unser Ergebnis:

Billy Joel and Elton John come Face 2 Face at the Rose Garden Nov 10

Elton John and Billy Joel Together Again
In an uncommon move the Rose Garden and Live Nation held an in-person press conference to announce a "Huge Portland Concert Event" (almost all concerts at the Rose Garden are announced through email press releases).  There was much speculation that the event would be an upcoming U2 concert , which is reportedly going to be the most expensive concert tour ever.
Conventional wisdom was wrong in this case and instead the announcement was for the return of Elton John and Billy Joel in concert on November 10th.
This paring came through town in January 2001 to rave reviews and quickly selling out tickets. Expectations are that the duo will sell out the arena again in record time.
Tickets are priced at $177.00, $97.00 and $51.50. Tickets go on sale Saturday, April 4th at 10a and can be purchased at the Rose Quarter Box Office (M-F 10a-5p), all participating Safeway/ Tickets West outlets, by calling 877.789.ROSE (7673)

Elton & Billy predictably entertaining in Anaheim

Fans leave delighted by pretty much the same show the duo offered eight years ago.

The Orange County Register
Sometimes giving people exactly what they want is precisely the best move performers can make. Case in point: Saturday night's first of two sold-out Honda Center shows from Elton John and Billy Joel.
The portly piano men - one now as bald as Mr. Clean, the other permanently bewigged - served up 35 songs during a hearty, nonstop 3½ hours of nostalgia and loose but top-shelf playing. Surely anyone who paid triple digits for choice seats considers their investment money well spent - and the people who paid cheap to sit behind the stage probably still can't believe how good they had it.
Again, 35 songs - 17 copyrighted by Taupin/John, 16 belonging to Billy, and two by the Beatles.
The duo has almost always tucked a pair of Fab Four tunes into the end of sets since they began this occasional Face 2 Face Tour back in the '90s. They did "I Saw Her Standing There" in 2001, if I recall correctly; this time it was two White Album tracks, "Birthday" followed without pause by "Back in the U.S.S.R." Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure they did the second one in '01 as well.
Indeed, the structure of these Hall of Famer summit meetings remains unchanged. They even started and ended Saturday's bonanza the same way they kicked off those three shows at the Forum eight years ago, the masters unaccompanied on "Your Song" and "Just the Way You Are" to open, "Candle in the Wind" and "Piano Man" to close.
The whole front segment was the same as before, in fact - Billy's "My Life" following Elton's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," with each star's respective rhythm section popping up and then disappearing via hydraulics. Then Sir Spectacles, in dapper, decorated tails, offered an hour of classics - and then came an hour from Long Island's favorite son, in a sleek black suit and burgundy tie. (Wisely, this time they did not cover each other in their separate sets, a move that proved pretty disastrous on previous outings.)
For the finale, there's a full-band face-off - all 15 musicians, including the marquee fellows - in a portion pumped up by energetic rockers, this time "The Bitch Is Back" and "You May Be Right." It helps, too, that unlike in '01 these legends now seem to be enthusiastic about their millions-grabbing endeavor; their singing and stomping meshes better than ever.
So how can this miss, right? Even with Elton requiring a few songs for his hoarse huffing to give way to more forceful vocals - he shook out the phlegm with "Burn Down the Mission" and was roaring by the time of "Levon" - it's impossible to imagine such a hit parade being anything less than broadly entertaining.
And I do mean "hit parade": I count only a half-dozen selections aired here that didn't storm the Top 40, and most of those are beloved standards from their respective songbooks. (Click here for a complete set list.)
Which, if I'm honest, is still kinda disappointing, although the puddle of people who might agree with me has to be extremely small.
Frankly, I had fingers crossed for something slightly less obvious. My hope was that Billy's magnificent 2006-08 shows, in which he blended loads of lesser-known songs with plenty of staples to satisfy casual fans, would somehow rub off on this first Face 2 Face outing in six years.
Enough of "Rocket Man," especially in its snooze-doodling space-jam incarnation Elton held over from his Vegas revue - and, hey, if you're gonna shift the ripping guitar riff of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" to a cheesy synth, you can stuff that one, too. Billy, meanwhile, should let "River of Dreams" dry up, update "We Didn't Start the Fire" and give "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" a rest - why bother with that when he could snarl through "Big Shot" instead?
But that's the trouble: Given how much material these guys are virtually by law required to perform, there's not much room for either artist to indulge deeper tracks.
Not counting the keys-rattling "Prelude/Angry Young Man," Billy exhumed only one such piece, "what they used to call an album cut" - in this case "Zanzibar," a wicked jazz-rock concoction from "52nd Street" (1978) that showcased the flugelhorn and trumpet chops of Carl Fischer. After savoring so many neglected morsels at his solo shows, however - from "Captain Jack" to "Vienna" to "And So It Goes" - it was a bit bland to settle for just another helping of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant."
Elton surprisingly dusted off a trio of FM favorites to lead off his solo turn, following the bombast of "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" with a soulful "Burn Down the Mission" and a suitably moody detour into "Madman Across the Water." But it was midway into that stretch, as I sensed people getting restless, that I realized I was wrong: More album cuts would have been a grave misstep.
In fouled-up economic times like these, people want value from high-priced entertainment, not "art" or variety - particularly when musical institutions like these are involved. Elton & Billy can save excursions through darkened pasts for a fatter financial era, when the staunchly devoted will gladly shell out $300 for a perch in the trees at the Greek at which point Billy, who'll be 60 in May, will still sing far better than Elton, who just turned 62. (Elton, however, will still play Southern blues and honky-tonk piano with more finesse.)
This Face 2 Face behemoth, however - which in some way kicks off the spring-into-summer season of geezers plying the same wares as always - couldn't be a better package for right now. It's a rare two-for-one deal. They're making gobs of cash off it, yeah - last time they raked in nearly $50 million in just 24 shows. But to average concert-goers, this has gotta seem like a steal.

POP MUSIC REVIEW
Saturday night's alright for the piano men, who gave fans a three-hour show full of hits.
By Steve Appleford
March 30, 2009
Partnerships between pop superstars usually deliver less than the sum of their talents. Nostalgia isn't always enough, but a surprising collaboration between Elton John and Billy Joel, who play nothing more than their best-known hits from the '70s and '80s, has been going strong since 1995.

That was enough to land the singer-pianists in front of a full house at the Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday as part of their latest "Face 2 Face" tour. If either headliner had any new material, it remained a secret during three full hours of music, including a short opening from the two and two separate sets followed by a big finish of Joel and John together.

John, in black tails, dived into "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" with his five-man band. He pounded the keys of his grand piano with real force, in what he described as his 40th year since making his U.S. debut in Los Angeles.

For a time in the '70s, John was the dominant pop superstar, a staggering cultural force whose impact went far beyond chart action and airplay. If that fame became increasingly focused on his sparkling outfits and less on his musical gifts, the original songs from that period have managed to live on in ways unknown to most of his contemporaries.

He invited fans to sing along to "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" (as they would have anyway). There were rousing crescendos and boogie-woogie side trips, a sound both flamboyant and grounded in human-scale emotion, from a stretched-out "Rocket Man" to a rocking "Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting)."

FOR THE RECORD:
Elton John: In Monday's Calendar, a review of Saturday's Elton John-Billy Joel concert in Anaheim reported that John described the appearance as his 40th year since making his U.S. debut in Los Angeles. The singer's calculation was off: He made his U.S. debut at the Troubadour in August 1970. -

There was no mistaking Joel's genuine connection with fans. The lightest of his hits ("Just the Way You Are," "Only the Good Die Young") were still soft and awfully close to easy listening, but the audience cheered him all the more.

The man can bang those keys when allowing himself to unwind. "River of Dreams" erupted with anxious piano melodies, blending into the Beach Boys' "California Girls" and back again. "Zanzibar" was a jazzier tune with no obvious hooks, more Steely Dan in mood. He picked up an electric guitar for "We Didn't Start the Fire" and its rushed, rhyming litany of random cultural references ("JFK, blown away, what else do I have to say?").
At the end, the singers sat behind their pianos for a series of spirited duets, playing each other's songs with energy and affection, trading verses on John's "Bennie and the Jets" and Joel's "Piano Man." It looked like a musical partnership built to last.

John celebrated his birthday with a few of his friends at Hamlet in Los Angeles. Guests included Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, former supermodel Cindy Crawford and a few others.

He celebrated his 56th birthday there and booked it again for his 62nd, dailymail.co.uk reports.

In the past, his parties would be filled with showgirls dripping in diamonds, Elvis look alikes, slot machines and roulette tables and even an ice sculpture replica of the Vegas Strip.

Elton John's Big, Beefy Birthday Bash

on Mar. 28, 2009 03:00 PM

How does one of music's biggest legends celebrate his birthday?

If it's Elton John, he rings in the occasion with a few good friends. And some greasy patties of ground beef.

Sir Elton turned 62 on March 25, and held his birthday party at Hamburger Hamlet in Los Angeles on Friday night. Well-wishers included acerbic funnyman David Spade, Daisy Fuentes, Gina Gershon, Barron Hilton and Cindy Crawford-who, it should be noted, still looks pretty good at 43.

Happy birthday, Elton! Go ahead and order the double cheeseburger. You only go around once.

On Friday night, the singer gathered some of his shiniest friends (including Cindy Crawford and the Osbournes) at Hamburger Hamlet near Beverly Hills. The man of the hour- who turned 62- was all smiles as he entered the restaurant and greeted his friends.

Elton John to create a ballet
Elton John to create a ballet

Elton John has many feathers in his cap and he´s about to add another. The singer is to help create a new ballet.

According to the Calgary Herald, Elton, who has conceptualized several hit Broadway musicals, is to team up with Canada´s Alberta Ballet to create an original work.

It´s described as "a semi-abstract ballet set to the music of Sir Elton John" and it´ll debut in May next year.

Elton is no stranger to ballet - his musical smash, Billy Elliott, is about a young British boy who takes up ballet dancing.

Elton John, Bill Joel add more 'Face 2 Face' shows

Elton John and Billy Joel have added a few new dates to their ongoing "Face 2 Face" tour since last check.

The outing, which kicked off earlier this month, continues tonight (3/26) in Phoenix, AZ. The new dates mostly come during a West Coast leg slotted for November, with two shows scheduled for Seattle (11/4, 7) and an appearance each in Oakland, CA (11/14) and San Jose, CA (11/17).

More shows are expected to roll in periodically, as the trek is planned to run off and on over the next two years.

John and Joel will literally come "Face 2 Face" during their concerts, starting each evening by playing a series of duets with twin pianos and trading vocals. The stars will then perform separately before joining once more for the grand finale, according to a press release. The shows are expected to include some of their greatest hits and a selection of rock-and-roll classics.

While the "Face 2 Face" tour takes a break in April, John will finish his Las Vegas "Red Piano" residency, which has been running since 2004. He'll also pop over to Europe for his own run of shows in June. Details can be found at the superstar's website.

John and Joel first toured together in 1994, and their most recent "Face 2 Face" outing before this year's affair was a sold-out, 24-date trek in 2003. The Grammy winners are the most successful and longest-running concert pairing in pop history, according to a press release.

Kiwi Aids expert comes home

Sunday Star-Times
BEST BUDDIES: Internationally-renowned Aids expert Charles Farthing with his friend Elton John.

Relevant offers

Internationally-renowned Aids expert Charles Farthing is used to rubbing shoulders with many of the world's most famous, including Princess Diana and Sir Elton John.

But the Dunedin-trained doctor has returned to New Zealand to share his knowledge on HIV/Aids management to specialists nationwide.

The trip will be rather low-key compared with some of his past experiences, particularly as board member on the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Farthing, 55, began working with the potentially-fatal disease in the early 1980s, not long after its discovery, and became friends with Sir Elton after some of his staff contracted HIV.

"He's a very nice man and he's been very committed to helping people with Aids. He's also quite delightful to work with because he has a tremendous sense of humour," Farthing told the Sunday Star-Times.

Sir Elton later invited him on to the star-studded board. The role has given Farthing an insight into the lives of the rich and famous, including at the foundation's launch in America in about 1989.

"I'm not especially fond of those celebrity things but Elton decided he wanted a press conference. All the paparazzi were there and there was a dias up at the front with two thrones on it  one for him and one for me. Obviously no one wanted to talk to me but finally, he got tired of all their questions and said to them 'Talk to Charles now'."

Farthing got to know Princess Diana after she opened the Aids ward at St Stephens Hospital in London in the early 1980s, where he worked.

"Princess Diana was extremely helpful. She was friendly with some of my patients and used to sit at their bedsides a lot.''

Farthing, who recently became pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme's Asia Pacific regional director of medical affairs for infectious diseases, says treatment has changed significantly since he saw his first patient with full-blown Aids in 1983. In the early days, contracting HIV was a death sentence.

"People got sick and you would save their lives many times and you would extend their lives quite significantly. You could buy them five years of life, even if they finally died. I never felt useless during the epidemic - you felt useful that you relieved their suffering considerably."

However, new drug therapies are as close to a cure as possible, he says.

Ironically, as a result of the treatment's success, some at-risk people, including men having sex with men, have started ignoring safe sex messages.

"The at-risk groups have got the message that with HIV, Aids people don't have to die any more. The bad kicker for that is they stopped taking protection."

To counter people's changing behaviour, new ways are being developed to protect people, including pre and post-exposure prophylaxis.

In some countries, it is possible to take anti-retroviral drugs for about a month after an episode of unprotected sex, which makes them far less likely to get the disease. However, he says it is expensive and best targeted at high-risk groups.

Clinical trials are also underway to see if people given treatment prior to having unprotected sex will make them less likely to contract HIV.

It may suit some at-risk people, such as African women who are prevented by their husbands from using condoms, he says.

"I'm sure the Catholic church will approve of it."

While there is a huge push to discover a vaccine, he doubted it will occur in his lifetime.

Farthing also worrries the global recession will reduce access to HIV treatment around the world.

One of the United Nations' aims is for universal access to HIV treatment by 2010 but only a third of the predicted nine million people worldwide with the disease are on anti-retrovirus drugs, he says.

"Rocket Man" and "The Stranger" Rock the OC

Elton John and Billy Joel rock the OC on March 28 and 30

We love seeing a major headliner pass through town, because we remain staunch fans of "arena rock," a term that has a slightly '70s-ish sheen but shouldn't. Why? Because a big show in a big place with hardcore fans has to be one of the funnest (yes, we said "funnest" and we meant it) things to do ever.

Speaking of hardcore fans, we went to filmmaker Dennis Przywara, who is not only famously knowledgeable about "Star Wars" but about fandom in general (in fact he even made a film about super fans). Mr. Przywara is also a committed follower of Billy Joel -- he's seen him 18 times, which is supremely awesome in our books -- so we asked him what people can expect from the big Billy Joel/Elton John show that's coming to Orange County on March 28 and 30. (While we dig the Billy, we're an Elton gal.)

1. Everyone wants to hear "Piano Man," and everyone will likely be satisfied. Same with the epic, operatic "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" (we do love that ditty). Expect both those standards near the end of Billy's set. "Vienna" is chancier (Mr. P says it took 15 shows for him to hear it live for the first time).

2. Get there early. Billy Joel historically does not have an opener. Plus, he's playing with Elton. So don't dilly dally.

3. "Everyone's there," says Mr. P. Young people, their parents, their grandparents, everyone. He likes the vibe of the show, that the crowd is unified in rocking out to an old-school entertainer who appeals to several generations. We think there's a lesson there for today's up-and-coming singer-songwriters. Win over the parents who will bring the kids to the concert.

4. Billy Joel will likely play a little bit from each album, he will banter with the crowd on occasion, and there might be fan-pleasing surprises sprinkled throughout (like moving a few lucky fans closer to the stage).

And because we don't want to leave Elton John out, we just have to say that "Grey Seal" is the most upbeat, fizziest song in the history of songs, and to hear that once live would be the fulfillment of a dream. We're just saying, Mr. John. Just a suggestion.

Crowd goes crazy for piano men

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2009/03/27/20090327billyeltonreview.html

The Arizona Republic

If Elton John's recent remark that this may be his last Face 2 Face tour with Billy Joel is true, then they're sending things off on a very high note.

The two keyboard superstars were in fine form Thursday for their three-hour-plus show at a sold-out US Airways Center in Phoenix. As the years have passed since their first joint tour in 1994, the onstage vibe of mutual respect has grown.

The two men, who have written some of pop music's most memorable songs, appear to genuinely relish the chance to jump in on each other's classics.

There was something magical about watching Britain's John, who has recorded such massive hits as “Tiny Dancer,” “Rocket Man” and “Crocodile Rock,” take a verse of Joel's “Just The Way You Are” early on in the show, when the pair shared the stage for four tunes.

Likewise, when New York's Joel jumped in for a verse or two on John's “Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me,” the baby-boomer-heavy audience went crazy.

Joel stepped back and let John do some fancy keyboard work on a rocking version of the New Yorker's “My Life.” Both sang well on the tune, one of Joel's signature songs.

John, 62, then performed an 11-song solo set that spotlighted one of his most productive periods — the'70s.

Wearing a dark coat with tails that was adorned with some glitter, John skipped the high notes but still delivered solid versions of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Daniel” and “Levon.”

“Rocket Man” sounded especially poignant, with exquisite piano playing by John and an extended, rocking ending.

John dueled with the synthesizer player in his backup band on the title track from 1971's “Madman Across the Water,” which he called “one of my favorite older albums.”

The crowd happily took over for a cappella choruses on another mega-hit, “Crocodile Rock.”

Joel, 59, came out throwing punches in the air for his 10-song solo set, which started with “Prelude/Angry Young Man.” He later mentioned that boxing legend Muhammad Ali, a Valley resident, was in the house, and dedicated 1978's “Zanzibar” to The Champ.

Joel is never short on onstage humor, and he dropped a joke about the people who had paid handsomely to sit in the arena's outer reaches: “I'd like to thank the people in Flagstaff for buying those seats.”

Later, the multi-millionaire thanked all the fans for showing up, joking, “We're just happy to have a job.”

Joel beefed up his band with three horns for such classics as “Movin' Out (Anthony's Song)” and “Only The Good Die Young.”

Joel's piano-playing was impressive on a saucy version of “Scenes From An Italian Restaurant,” which featured a killer sax solo by Mark Rivera. The sax player also had the crowd dancing with solos on “It's Still Rock and Roll To Me” and “Only The Good Die Young.”

Wearing a suit and tie, Joel picked up an electric guitar for his boomer-flashback anthem, “We Didn't Start the Fire,” and he simply grabbed a microphone (and enjoyed twirling the stand) for “It's Still Rock and Roll To Me.”

John returned to wrap things up on a joint version of Joel's “Uptown Girl,” on which the Brit handled much of the vocal.

As John pounded the keys on his hit “The Bitch Is Back,” Joel crawled across the tops of both of their large grand pianos.

That mutual respect shone through again as the two traded verses on Joel's rocking “You May Be Right” and John's massive hit, “Bennie and the Jets,” both of which had many in the crowd dancing in place.

Joel pulled out a harmonica for his ultimate signature song, “Piano Man,” with the audience loudly handling the choruses.

That masterful song wrapped up a show by two piano men who will never be replaced once they stop playing in public.

Elton & Elvis vs. ‘the moronic entertainment environment'

As Canada prepares to celebrate the Junos, Robert Everett-Green talks to Elton John about his talk show, which stars Elvis Costello and hits the country's airwaves this weekend

From Saturday's Globe and Mail

I recently saw an interview Madonna did for Swedish television. She obviously didn't think much of the questions, so she just pulled the conversation toward the things she really wanted to talk about. It worked because she had time, and because the interviewer lacked David Letterman's relentless instinct to keep everything light and bright. But if the encounter had been cut down to a five-minute broadcast slot, a lot of what Madonna wanted to say would have disappeared.

“We live in a sound-bite culture,” said Elton John, who has endured plenty of unsatisfying media interviews, though he seemed reasonably pleased with our recent chat by phone. “You get five minutes to plug your record or your tour, with no chance to really talk about the music and where it came from. I haven't really been asked those questions for years and years.”

So when a Canadian proposal to co-produce an in-depth TV interview program came his way, John jumped at it. The result is Spectacle: Elvis Costello With ..., a 13-part series of conversations about music, hosted by the man who, 30 years ago, cut a demo on which he sang, “I've seen dreams have a happy ending / Disappearing on my TV.”

The show, which begins weekly Canadian broadcasts on CTV on April 3 and on Bravo! on April 4, is an anomaly in the current media environment. Most of the one-hour programs have only one guest. There are no comic monologues, no sidekicks, no stupid musician tricks, no spectacle of any kind. It's just conversation in a small theatre, with occasional musical illustrations, and one or two performances, often with Costello joining in.

The guest list includes Lou Reed, the Police, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Herbie Hancock, Norah Jones, James Taylor, John Mellencamp, Renée Fleming and John, who appears on the first show and is also an executive producer of the series. It's meant to be an antidote, John said, to “the moronic entertainment environment” he finds on most TV.

“I was desperate to have a program in which artists could really talk about their art, something that in 50 years' time people could come back and refer to,” John added. “Where's the definitive Nina Simone interview? The definitive James Brown interview?”

Not surprisingly, most of the guests are much-decorated veterans. When you're making TV for history, the musicians at the top of the current charts aren't necessarily your first choices.

“The greats are the greats,” said Stephen Warden, the Canadian producer who had been pitching a show like Spectacle for years before linking up with John and his producer/spouse, David Furnish. “To some extent, that meant people who had been around for a long time and had done a lot of influential work. We wanted the shows to be timeless documents, not promotional opportunities.”

Costello seems to have been everyone's first choice as host. Apart from his own stature as a musician, he has written persuasively about a lot of other people's music (most notably in a well-annotated list of the 500 best albums ever for Vanity Fair magazine in 2000), and successfully guest-hosted for Letterman when the latter was ill with shingles in 2003.

“I knew that Elvis was a witty guy,” Warden said. “But I was really impressed that he could just walk in and do it all, from monologue to interviews to performances.”

Costello's own musical history clearly adds something to the first episode with his close friend John. The two spend much of the time talking about other musicians whose work has had a defining impact on their own. An extended dialogue about Laura Nyro (“I idolized her,” says John) includes a video clip of her performing at the Monterey Pop Festival, and an impromptu demonstration at the piano of the debt John's song Burn Down the Mission owes to Nyro's rule-breaking notions of song structure.

There are also lengthy tributes to more obscure figures such as Billy Stewart (“the most underrated R&B singer ever,” according to John) and American singer-songwriter David Ackles, two of whose discs appeared on Costello's Vanity Fair list. The show ends with a duet performance by John and Costello (their first ever) of Ackles's Down River.

All this ancestor worship has a polemical undercurrent, which comes out in the open when John recalls the days when “people were genuine performers,” when songwriters told compelling stories, and when there seemed to be no boundaries between one kind of popular music and another, in people's minds or on radio. Things have taken a dire turn since then, he told me.

“MTV started an age of people who can't perform and can't really sing,” he said. “A lot of live shows now are like watching music videos, with lip-synching and everything. There are so many machines involved.

“There's some great stuff happening now, but there's a lot of mediocrity. Apart from Rufus Wainwright and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, nobody's really throwing the rule book out the window. You turn on the radio and it all sounds alike. You have all these Black Eyed Peas kind of records, they all sound the same, and you have these terribly restrictive radio formats. In Britain, a band like Kings of Leon can still have a hit on radio, but not in America. In America, the music scene is dead on its ass.”

On the show, John singles out Wainwright and Ron Sexsmith in particular as current musicians who are not getting their due. Wainwright “would have been enormous” if he'd been making his kind of music in the early seventies, John says, and Sexsmith “is a great Canadian songwriter, he writes beautiful songs, he's never going to get played on the radio. It's tragic, it's disgusting.”

A lot of these sentiments may play well among the generation that came of age when John's career began. Spectacle's guest list has a definite golden-oldie look, though Warden said that the demographics of the intended audience were less important in the producers' minds than the desire to get the thoughts of Smokey Robinson and the rest on record. The first show also includes some intriguing personal tidbits, such as the news that since John came out some 20 years ago, Bernie Taupin, his principal lyricist, has quietly retired the pronoun “she” from songs he has written with and for John.

Spectacle has already been seen in Britain and the United States, where it ran last winter on the Sundance Channel. Discussions are under way about a second season, and about whether the guest list needs to include more prominent young talent.

“The TV people would like to have more commercial people on, like Beyoncé, to get more viewers,” said John. “But I want to have people who have more to talk about. I think Beyoncé's very talented, but she's just starting.”

The first season will emerge in extended form on DVD. Most of the tapings ran for two to three hours, so there will be lots of outtakes on the discs, said Warden.

John's time on Spectacle has already provoked one spinoff. After talking with Costello about Leon Russell, and doing a little piano improvisation in Russell's distinctive style, John called up the venerable sideman and talked about more than old times.

“The upshot is that I'm going to be doing an album with Leon Russell next year, with T-Bone Burnett producing,” he said. Given the origin of the project, maybe they should call it Bifocals.

Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… premieres April 3 at 10 p.m. ET on CTV; and April 4 at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo!

Elton John Drops Libel Suit Over Mock Diary

CHICAGO Libel laws in Britain generally favor the plaintiff over the media, but Elton John has found out that there are limits. John has dropped his lawsuit against the Guardian after a court of appeals refused to let him appeal another court's judgment in the newspaper's favor.

John sued the Guardian over a satirical column in the paper's Weekend magazine supplement by Marina Hyde that was published last July. The column, "A Peek Into The Diary Of ...," poked fun at the singer's celebrity fundraising. John said the piece was defamatory, suggesting he was insincere in his work centered on HIV/AIDS research and employing a "gratuitously offensive, nasty and snide tone."

But according to an account by Stephen Brook Friday that was posted on the Guardian Web site, a high court judge last December dismissed the libel claim, siding with the Guardian in its contention that the article "did not carry the factual meanings that John had claimed." The judge refused to allow John to appeal the decision, and ordered him to pay court costs.

A period to appeal the appellate court ruing expired Thursday, the Guardian reported.

John's time on Spectacle has already provoked one spinoff. After talking with Costello about Leon Russell, and doing a little piano improvisation in Russell's distinctive style, John called up the venerable sideman and talked about more than old times.

"The upshot is that I'm going to be doing an album with Leon Russell next year, with T-Bone Burnett producing," he said. Given the origin of the project, maybe they should call it Bifocals.

Billy Joel vs. Elton John

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2009/03/19/20090319eltonvsbilly.html

By 1994, when Elton John and Billy Joel first teamed up on a Face 2 Face tour, they weren't exactly tearing up the pop charts like they had back in their prime.

Billy Joel, Elton John

When: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26.

Where: US Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson St., Phoenix.

Admission: Sold out. Available through secondary sources, usually at marked-up prices. Beware of counterfeits.

Details: 602-379-7800, usairwayscenter.com.

And that was 15 years ago.

Today, a person born anytime from the late '80s on would have trouble distinguishing between Elton John and a piano man who often stood accused of sounding like Elton early in his career.

"Hmm, let's see now, one did that Princess Di death record, uh huh, and the other divorced Christie Brinkley and started crashing his car into old people's living rooms. Got it!"

Sure, the youngsters could dig deep and illegally download that treasure trove of hits but they might also find more off-putting minutia to keep them from wanting to cough up two weeks salary flipping burgers to see two old dudes pounding pianos like they were the second coming of Ferrante & Teicher.

Who?

My point exactly.

Makes no difference.

What better excuse to examine the careers of the Rocket Man and the Piano Man and see what it is that's keeping young blood from dipping a toe in the fan pool?

Let's Face 2 Faceoff!

Scary Early Works

Elton John's 1969 debut album, "Empty Sky," had a creepy pen and ink drawing of the singer in which his arms are proportionally shorter than the rest of his body, which in real life would make it impossible to pound the ivories without constantly hitting his head on the piano.

Billy Joel's 1971 debut album, "Cold Spring Harbor," is incorrectly mastered at a faster speed, leaving the impression to the few people who heard it at the time that Alvin had cut a solo album without Simon and Theodore.

Scary Stage Antics

Elton John's penchant for dressing against his music has found him mounting the stage in a Donald Duck outfit as well as impersonating the Statue of Liberty and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Billy Joel used to extend his concerts by ripping up his negative reviews onstage. Not all at once, though. That would've taken weeks.

Scary Pre-Fame Suicide Attempts

Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin once walked in on Elton trying to commit suicide when the singer was about to marry a woman. According to Taupin, "Elton had set the gas on low with all the windows open. What's more, he was resting his head (in the oven) on a pillow." It's a little bit funny - indeed!

Disgusted with his stalling musical career in 1970, Billy Joel tried to work on his own lasting finish by attempting suicide via drinking furniture polish, a move which brought him no Joy, lemon scented or otherwise. He was rushed to New York's Bellevue mental institution where the attendants were heard to remark, "And just look at that shine!" OK, not really, but Joel Pledges never do it again. Haw!

Scary Feuds

Elton John's 1974 hit "The Bitch is Back" proves prophetic every time he starts a feud with another celebrity. Sir Elton has had testy exchanges with Keith Richards, Robbie Williams and Lily Allen. And Madonna crossed him off her Christmas card list for two years when he accused her of lip syncing in her live show and called her "a miserable cow."

Billy Joel has engaged in no celebrity feuding, but last year he actually got into a nasty verbal back and forth with some two-bit nobody blogger Ed Champion who insisted Joel was attempting "a fey cross between Michael McDonald and Bruce Springsteen" on "A Matter of Trust." Joel told him how wrong he was by admitting he was trying to sing like Robert Palmer. That's supposed to make it better?

Scary Casualness

In his review of Elton John's first hit, "Your Song," critic Robert Christgau cited the singer's "affected offhandedness" in trying to sound off the cuff.

On "You're Only Human (Second Wind)," Billy Joel sings "Everybody makes mistakes" in a flub so rehearsed sounding it leaves some listeners convinced he's only an android.

Scary Self Aware Lyric

If you ever needed a reason to appreciate lyricist Bernie Taupin's flowery hand, enjoy the dearth of meaning found on the one song Elton John penned all the lyrics for, the 1978 b-side "Flintstone Boy," "(Please don't talk about the Flintstone Boy/He's all right with me /Oh yeah...oh yeah..."). Or how about the song he co-wrote with Cher, "Don't Trust That Woman" ("Don't rear-end her, oh it'll send her").

With "We Didn't Start the Fire," Billy Joel attempted his own "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and came up with his own "Bicycle Race" instead. But by working in historical references to Sen. Joseph McCarthy and his ruthless lawyer Roy Cohn, he anticipated the latter part of the '90s, when Joel lost his hair and suddenly looked exactly like . . . Sen. Joseph McCarthy's ruthless lawyer Roy Cohn!

Scary Baldness

At first, Elton John overcompensated for his balding plate by wearing outrageous customized glasses and ridiculous stage costumes. During the '80s, he settled for more conservative garbs and an unsettling Truman Capote look. Finally, in the '90s, he got a hair transplant that took and now maintains a benevolent appearance, like an Akita in sunglasses.

Billy Joel lost his hair gradually and is now content to let it shine, adding a beard to keep from looking like the aforementioned Joseph McCarthy attorney Roy Cohn.

Scary Dance Steps

In the video for "I'm Still Standing," Elton dons a boater straw hat and cane and busts out vaudevillian moves not seen since the days of Bugs and Daffy.

In the video for "Uptown Girl," Billy Joel and future wife Christie Brinkley engage in white people dancing so lacking in rhythm that it inspires Al and Tipper Gore to explore their inner honky trying to frug to Fleetwood Mac.

Scary Onstage Abuse of Equipment

People who'd come to see Elton's U.S. debut at the L.A. Troubadour in 1970 expecting to see the sensitive singer songwriter of "Your Song" were shocked to see him kick over his piano bench and do handstands on the piano. Not during "Your Song," though.

A minor international incident occurred in 1987 when Billy Joel, the first American artist to play the Soviet Union since the fall of the Berlin Wall, flipped over an electric keyboard because the lighting engineers would not turn down the house lights. Glasnost schmasnost. Come on, Billy, you never saw Yakov Smirnoff kicking over mic stands in our country.

Scary Depression

Throughout his 40-year career, Elton has suffered through drug addictions, alcoholism, depression, confusion about his sexuality, shopping addictions, bulimia and petulant temper tantrums. Hey, that sounds like an ABC Afterschool Special I want to see!

Before seeking help for alcohol addiction, Billy Joel became synonymous with car crashes, reaching his demolition derby zenith when he plowed his vintage 1967 Citroen into the house of a 94-year-old woman who professed to having never heard of him or "Only the Good Die Young."

Elton John To Fund Watford Signings?

eltonwatford
Elton John quit his post as lifetime president of Watford back in November after criticizing the board, but returned to the fold in January after a new regime took over at the club. And now, he´s looking to fund the Championship side´s summer transfers, says the Watford Observer.
No, not by digging into his own pockets, but by holding a concert at the Vicarage Road ground, with the proceeds going to new signings. And chairman of the 16th place club is obviously very excited about this idea:
"I am grateful that he will consider that and we will do everything we can to make it happen.
"Elton has specifically stated to me in the past that he would like that money to go towards players and new acquisitions."
I think this could be the start of a new trend. Having celebrity fans hold fundraising events benefiting their club´s transfer kitty. Although, I don´t think Osama Bin Laden´s bake sale for Arsenal would do too much good.

Jennifer bought our tickets for us (Julie, Kelli and me)and got us a driver for the night. The driver dropped us off at Sam's Cafe for some dinner and drinks before the concert. Julie ordered us up the best margaritas and shots. The Billy Joel Elton John concert was totally amazing! They played for 3 1/2 amazing hours. It seemed like 45 minutes. I couldn't believe it was 11:15pm when we got out of there! What an amazing night with truly amazing friends. I have known Jennifer since 3rd grade, Julie since 4th grade and Kelli since freshman year in H.S. This is Julie's amazing photography/camera. I need a new camera!

27th March 2009

SIR Elton John phoned DJ Ironik to tell him how much he loves his new single.

The rapper, 21, has sampled the ivory tinkler on his third single Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer), out this week - and is only the third artist to get permission from Sir Elton to sample one of his tunes.

He told me: "Elton actually called my manager to say he loved the track and that he was a fan of my music. I love the old-school stuff and I've always been into sampling it."

After receiving such a big boost, Ironik is now keen for Elton, 62, and his snazzy specs to join him in a collaboration.

He added: "It could be a possibility that the two of us do something. It would be massive." Elton said: "I've only let Tupac and Kanye West sample my stuff. That shows how high I rate Ironik."

Elton John, rei do futebol

Billy Joel and Elton John Show Lacks Special Moments

http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/uponsun/2009/03/billy_joel_and_elton_john_show.php

BillyJoelEltonJohn-15.jpg
Luke Holwerda
In 1994, when Billy Joel and Elton John first took the stage together in Philadelphia, it was quite a novelty. Two piano-playing singer-songwriters -- who've each sold more than 100 million records on their own -- together in concert! Wowza!
Five tours and 15 years later, the newness is gone. Last night's Face 2 Face Tour stop at U.S. Airways Arena was nothing if not predictable, from "Yankee Doodle Dandy" playing as Joel took the stage through the awkward hugs after the closer, "Piano Man." Still, the chance to see two men who've combined to record 80-plus top 40 singles share a stage is enough to sell out any arena, with good reason. And, for John and Joel, the chance to take another spin around the country as part of what music industry magazine Billboard has called the most successful tour pairing of all time makes a lot of sense. It's what they call a win-win. So, far be it from me to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, but I was a little let down.
BillyJoelEltonJohn-8.jpg
Luke Holwerda
It's not that Face 2 Face was in any way bad: Both John and Joel are consummate professionals who've got a combined catalog anyone other than The Beatles would envy. The show featured all the hits (full set list below) in an appropriate order, played relatively enthusiastically. But, with two talents on this level, backed by a 13-piece band, I'd expect to see an extra special and totally unique moment every single night, and we didn't get that in Phoenix.
First, their choice of covers was bad. Elton's birthday was March 25, so after making a couple jokes about his birthday having been the day before they proceeded to cover the Beatles' version of "Happy Birthday." I dunno, maybe they learned the song to play here, but it felt about as enthusiastic as the rendition Applebee's waitresses do. They followed that up with a cover of "Back in the U.S.S.R." I wouldn't want the men to freak out anyone in the aged (seriously aged) crowd, but I thought Beatles songs were about as uninspired as they could get. Why not break out something a little fresher? Maybe even (gulp) a Coldplay song? Old people love Coldplay!
Second, there was very little done to update the sound of some of their hits from the synthesizer era. "Just The Way You Are," the second song of the night, was a prime example. It's a gorgeous ballad, but the Jefferson Starship synths at the beginning of the song sound ridiculous to a contemporary ear, and the saxophone solo is straight-up elevator jazz. "I'm Still Standing" fell in to the same trap, substituting a cheesy little guitar solo for the saxophone. It ended up sounding a lot like the video looks.  Surely these songs could have been updated a bit for this, their fifth tour together.
BillyJoelEltonJohn-9.jpg
Luke Holwerda
Third, John's setlist could use some work. Joel was pretty solid in all his choices, even the deep cuts, but John's set really bogged down when he played three songs off his mediocre 1971 album Madman Across the Water, which has "Tiny Dancer" and not much else. Then he played "Burn Down the Mission" off his 1970 album Tumbleweed Connection, a record that's best known for going gold without a single. The extended version had him hitting every key on the piano at least a dozen times, while I checked my watch. "Crocodile Rock" got the biggest reaction of any of the songs the men played solo, though, even without a duck suit.
Billy, on the other hand, kept his set compact (sadly, no "Captain Jack," which I would have gladly spent eight minutes watching) and filled the space between songs with jokes about the cheap seats being in Flagstaff and lighting techs who have to pee but are trapped above the stage until after the show. His material felt fresher, especially "Zanzibar," which had a great jazz trumpet solo in it.
Still, as solid as Joel was, this tour isn't about him, it's about the two piano men on stage together. The Face 2 Face concept is no longer new, but, with a little more work from Joel and John, it could have had some novelty. If the men come around a sixth time, hopefully they'll freshen it up. As it stands, though, I'd prefer a night at the Big Bang, the dueling piano bar on Mill Avenue. Sure, you're not seeing two of the world's greatest singer-songwriters, but you are guaranteed to see something unscripted, unexpected and unique -- for me, that's crucial, no matter who's on stage.
Critic's Notebook:
Last Night: Billy Joel and Elton John Face 2 Face at U.S. Airways Arena
Better Than: Well, at least you didn't have to give them a dollar with your requests, as you would at Big Bang. Not that they took requests, of course, otherwise I'd have tossed up a $20 and a napkin that said "Captain Jack" on it.
Personal Bias: Apparently I like Billy Joel a lot more than Elton John. I would have said they were about even in my book before tonight.
Random Detail: Did anyone else notice how a picture of John flashed on the screen when Joel sang "England's got a new queen..." in "We Didn't Start the Fire."
Further Listening: Elton John wasn't always as stodgy as he was last night. In fact, as a hip young piano man he really seemed to do a lot with a little, as in this live version of "Crocodile Rock."
By The Way: Follow my twitter, where I'm starting to do some live updates from show's I'm seeing. twitter.com/martincizmar

Allen Paul says:
Always amusing to imagine, somewhere among a crowd of 20,000 fans thoroughly enjoying themselves, a curmudgeonly music critic under the impression he isn't doing his job unless he is being critical. Is "Phoenix New Times" where one ends up when the real publications won't have you? (Oh by the way: There is no title track to Tumbleweed Connection).

2 thumbs down for Martin Cizmar and a High 5 for Allen Paul. Elton...62 and still rockin'.

Jack Suslak says:
If you are going to post a review get your facts straight, setlist correction, the Elton opening Instrumental is called Funeral For a Friend, and opening Billy's set is Prelude which goes into Angry Young Man. And Madman Across the Water, was the title track Elton played, and btw it couldnt be too mediocre seeing that Elton played 3 songs from it, the title track, tiny dancer and the brilliant Levon. Also it was Burn Down The Mission that Elton played off Tumbleweed Connection. So thanks for the review but wanted to clarify a few things.

Will says:
Wow. I cannot believe anyone would write a poor review of Elton and Billy live in concert. This review is ridiculous. These two men are 60 years old and they rock better than most bands of today (including Coldplay). Elton's voice is amazing, and Billy still has the energy of a kid. Elton is a bit more tame, sure... but his playing and singing is leaps and bounds better than anyone else in music. I am not sure what you expected from these guys as being unique or unexpected... when people have been around for 40 years, I think its fair to expect. I expected to be wowed by two of the greatest of all time... two performers who may have slowed a bit, but haven't lost their magic. I expected to hear timeless songs performed with passion. I expected a 3 hour plus show to make me feel like I got my money's worth. In that respect, I got exactly what I expected.

Funeral for a friend...i've heard better..but Not Dissappointed at all..

errruhhh..interesting....the organist for Elton...was young...and unique..i liked him..but most would have seen him as the subwoofing Gary Numan or Rick Wakeman
of new age?..i guess it's a needed place since there's no real orchestra.

Martin Cizmar says:
Paul: Sorry for messing that title track thing up in the review (fixed now) I had it right on the setlist, and thought I'd fixed it in the story, but these are the hazards of writing/editing at 2 a.m. after a 14 hour day.
Jack: I think the setlist is correct, with the exception of the names of the two instrumental interludes. Let me know if there is actually an inaccuracy.
Will: How many "bands of today" have you gone to see? I won't argue that my generation has produced anyone on par with Billy/Elton at their peak (at least yet) but there are certainly A LOT of younger bands who put on shows that shame this one. Older ones too. Willie Nelson, for example, is 15 years older than either of them and has probably played more shows than the two of men combined, but at his show I felt like I was seeing something not completely choreographed. Gee whiz...what a shock. Another writer who does not do his homework. Aside from the ridiculous critique on SO MANY levels, Billy Joel and Elton John have performed the Beatles Bithday/Back in the USSR at EVERY TOUR STOP THIS YEAR.

We loved the show! Elton John and Billy Joel are remarkable performers and for 3 plus hours we were able to step away from the troubles of the world and be thouroughly entertained by two of the World's best! It was a concert that non-generational ... all ages were there rockin. My ticket was the very best Christmas present my husband has ever given me. You obviously were only there to be critical - I'm sorry you did not get the opportunity to just enjoy it.

andrea says:
Martin,
Were you actually at the concert, or did someone else write this review? Because you definitely weren't at the same show I was. Otherwise, you would have remembered that Billy played "We Didn't Start the Fire" early on in his set - I think it was even before he played "Movin' Out", let alone calling Elton's "Funeral For a Friend" an 'instrumental'. Are you a fan or not??
I've completely lost my voice today after screaming at the top of my lungs for nearly 4 hours last night at one of the best concerts I've ever been to - and I am a regular attender of "bands of today" concerts.
I went to see Elton, and wasn't disappointed in the leastt. But got an incredible surprise by what an entertainer Billy Joel still is. Can you tell me of any other entertainer who can play no less than three instruments in one setting, throw entire microphone stands up in the air, catch them, keep singing and dancing around the stage - all without skipping a beat, losing his breath or screwing up 30 year old songs? If so, I'd like to go to that concert!
Your review is a sham...next time, poll the ten closest people around you and take their feedback for your review. Maybe you'd make a better reporter than a critic!

Martin Cizmar says:
Rob: I generally don't read other reviews from the same tour so they don't color my view. But thanks for making my point: they didn't do anything new or special for us. How long could it take them to learn two NEW cover songs, with a baking band of 13 people to help out? They need to make it feel more "off-the-cuff"!
Joyce: I go see two or three shows a week to "be critical" and am often not this critical. Glad you and your husband enjoyed it though!

Sorry, Andrea, because I'm there to be critical I take notes. Your memory about the setlist is incorrect... Might some of your other recollections be as well?

Chris says:
Whoa--I don't think Martin Cizmar and I were at the same concert. Did he go to Glendale by mistake and see wanna-be singers?
Elton and Billy were incredible! Both had fantastic energy and seemed to loved the audience. Elton played at least 3 extra songs--he was obviously having a good time. 3+ hours later, the crowd was still on it's feet begging for more. It was over too soon! Loved it!

Dave says:
I don't understand your disparaging of Elton's setlist coupled with your review that the setlist should be mixed up a little. Elton eschewed many of his radio classics (Someone Saved my Life Tonight, Something About the Way You Look, Honky Cat, etc...) and played an incredible Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding intro that before this tour was pretty rare for him. Hearing that in and of itself made the night very special for me. I grew up listening to Elton and love alot of his older stuff that rarely ever hit his concerts. So I give him credit for not just caving into playing #1 hits.
And are you really seriously about Elton/Billy covering Coldplay? I actually found it appropriate that they would cover The Beatles - the group both of them grew up on and the group that influenced their musical development. I found it more of an homage to the Beatles than just 2 covers of an old band.
The only downside to the concert for me was Elton's inability hit some of the high notes (he didn't even try) on songs like Crocodile Rock, Daniel, and Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting. Having said that - I understand he's a bit older than he was 35 years ago and if he knows he can't hit them - better to not even try than sounding bad.
All in all - it was an incredible evening with 2 legends of this country's musical history. Its always easy to nitpick any performance - but last night was about reliving youth for the vast majority of the audience while forgetting about life's troubles for 4 hours. And that mission was accomplished with aplomb!

We went to the show last night and had a WONDERFUL time. Elton was good, the two togther on stage was really good...but Billy rocked last night. But to be fair I am a HUGE Joel fan, and I really like some Elton.
Joel's shout out to Ali was nice. Seeing a few celbs in the croud was nice. But the music was awesome. I noticed that John was on the screen for the "England has a new queen" during we didn't start the fire.
For ALL of us that enjoyed the show; It was nice to have enjoyed the evening with you, and to have the opportunity to sing to Joel & John was cool. We are listening to Joel in the office today. (New York State of Mind currently)
If anyone didn't enjoy the show, sorry. Maybe it is not your kind of music, or you had a bad day, because Joel & John didn't!

Setlist is correct other than the titles of the instrumentals. And the original setlist has We Didnt Start The Fire in the right slot. But my other points are valid in my opinion

BK says:
Okay people, let's take it easy on Martin for a bit. It was an honest review, and he is partly right. Nitpicking about the setlist is not going to make him change how he feels about the show.
First off, let me say that I'm a huge fan of both these guys. I've seen Elton ten times and Billy twice in concert, and I've enjoyed every single show. I think they are amazing performers, and to call their concert "lacking of special moments" is a bit unfair--but hey, that's Martin's opinion and it's his job to write what he feels.
(On an unrelated note, to call "Madman Across the Water" or "Tumbleweed Connection" "mediocre" albums is grossly arguable, but again, to each his own.)
For us die-hard fans, ANY concert is a "special moment." Singing "Piano Man" with Elton and Billy onstage (along with 20,000 around you) is unforgettable for sure. But everybody has a different opinion of what a "special moment" is, and if "surprises" are what you're looking for, you will not find it at an Elton/Billy show.
Since I live in L.A., I go to many concerts (perhaps too many during this recession), both at big stadiums and small clubs. Once in a great while, an artist will throw in a "surprise" at their show here and there, but when you get to the venue to see whatever artist, you already have an idea of what to expect. Surprises are simply rare to come by.
By the way, I have seen Coldplay twice and Willie Nelson once, and neither of them "surprised" me; they simply put on a great show with great music. Same goes for Elton and Billy.
You will rarely ever see Elton or Billy perform some random songs by up-and-coming artists. I won't argue that it'd be interesting, but that's not what the fans are paying for. They're there for nostalgia and to hear the songs they know, exactly as they know them. If the songs sound a little '80s with a sax, that's fine by me. I don't care to see John Mahon re-interpret the sax solo on his conga drums.
And for those of you who have ever seen a Face 2 Face show, Martin is also right in that the format hasn't changed at all. The duo even played (better) Beatles covers on previous tours, so if you've been to their show before, you're gonna see more or less the same thing. But as I said, when you're a fan (or a newbie to the tour), none of that will matter. In fact, I dare say we go because it is like visiting familiar friends, and we have a fun time as a result.
For "veterans" of the Face 2 Face Tour over the years, yes, the newness is gone as Martin wrote. But really, who cares?

ELTON PLAYS FOR WATFORD

Sir Elton John is planning a concert at Vicarage Road to raise £2million for Watford.
The rock superstar has resumed his title as Hornets honorary life president following a boardroom clear-out.
Five months ago he quit and even had memorabilia removed from a corporate box in protest at the way the club was being run. But a new board chaired by Jimmy Russo, the return of Graham Taylor as non-executive director and improved results under rookie boss Brendan Rodgers has lifted the gloom.
Sir Elton said: "I wish the new chairman, the board, the manager, the team and all Watford's loyal supporters a successful conclusion to the season. I hope that in the summer next year we shall all be able to come together for another concert to benefit the club."
An earlier Elton gig at Watford four years ago raised £1.4million for then manager Aidy Boothroyd to finance a surprise promotion to the Premier League.

More stories about: Elton John

Sir Elton John wants to hold another money-spinning concert at Vicarage Road next summer with the proceeds going towards new signings for Watford.
The superstar celebrated his 62nd birthday on Wednesday by regaining his title as the Hornets´ Honorary Life President.
He relinquished the position in November in protest against the direction the club were heading under former chairman Graham Simpson and chief executive Mark Ashton.
Sir Elton raised around £1.3m when he held a concert in June 2005 as part of the `Buy Back the Vic´ campaign. But the rock star stunned the Watford hierarchy by stating that he wanted the cash to go towards strengthening former manager Aidy Boothroyd´s playing staff.
Now it seems the multi-millionaire is likely to have his wish granted second time around should the gig go ahead next summer.
Watford chairman Jimmy Russo said: "I am grateful that he will consider that and we will do everything we can to make it happen.
"Elton has specifically stated to me in the past that he would like that money to go towards players and new acquisitions."
Hornets chief executive Julian Winter added: "Clearly, we were all delighted by Sir Elton´s acknowledgement of a potential concert here at Vicarage Road, and we´re already exploring ways of us facilitating this next close season.
"Of course, much will depend on the state of the reconstruction of the stadium at that time and how that will fit around the major logistical operation that is hosting a concert.
"What we will ensure is that we explore every eventuality because, clearly, there is nothing more we would like to see than Sir Elton John back at his spiritual home."
The music star´s spokesman Gary Farrow could not confirm whether the concert will definitely go ahead at this stage, but Hornets director Graham Taylor said: "It was his idea. It was not something we asked him to do, but it´s another sign of his commimtent to Watford and that has always been there."
Fellow boardroom member Stuart Timperley added: "He´s a very generous hearted bloke and loves the club and if he will commit to do that, that would be fantastic for us. And I´m sure if he says he´s going to do it, he´ll do it."
Manager Brendan Rodgers joked: "All we need to do now is find the biggest stadium in the world, fill it and then we can get all that money.
"He has been terrific since coming back on board and has been very supportive," the Hornets remarked on a more serious note.
"There is a lot of work to go into something like that so it is one for the future, but it is great that we may be able to get some more money to get players in.
"Next season we will not have much money, but I am confident we can do well next year and keep improving and then we can see about the summer.
"As for the concert, it would be great for Watford and everyone concerned."

Elton John coming to Lisbon

28/3/2009
British pop legend Sir Elton John is to perform in Lisbon on June 27th, at the Restelo stadium.
His upcoming performance was confirmed this week by show producers Espelho de Cultura.
Now aged 62 the acclaimed artist, whose career spans decades, will be accompanied by his band in what will be his first since the controversy-embroiled quasi performance in Portugal in September 2000.
Elton John´s last ill-fated performance in Portugal that year was held at the Estoril Casino and saw the performer walk off the stage without explanation or apparent reason. He had allegedly complained of smoke in the Casino´s `Black & Silver´ room, where he was about to sing.

Elton John rockets through Rushmore

Elton John

There´s a reason that they camped out for tickets for almost a week.

A reason the tickets evaporated within seconds. A reason why his music can be heard on at least 10 different radio stations at any given time in the Black Hills. A reason he hasn´t had an album sell less than a million copies in 38 years.

Reasons for the Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe and Grammy awards and Kennedy Center Honors. And a reason he had the best-selling single of all time. Sir Elton John is - that - good.

200 million records, 29 studio albums, four live albums, three Broadway shows, more than 500 songs, 128 singles and 11 greatest hits collections later, people still seem to dig his raspy voice and the way he attacks whichever keyboard is at hand.

When Elton John plays his first note in Rapid on Wednesday, April 1, the stage will be bare, just a man and his instrument. But backing him up is a 40-year legacy of knowing the right note to play and in most cases, how to pair those sounds with the lyrics of Bernie Taupin - who was lucky enough to answer the same Liberty Records classified ad John did.

We´re catching him on his "Rocket Man - Number Ones" tour. So, fans can expect to hear "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Bennie And The Jets," "Daniel," "Crocodile Rock," his cover of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Island Girl," "Don´t Go Breaking My Heart," "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word," "Sacrifice," "Don´t Let The Sun Go Down On Me," "Can You Feel The Love Tonight," "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," "Candle In The Wind" and, of course, "Your Song."

Not that he´d be able to hear my requests among the screams of some 9,700 others in the crowd, here´s what else I´d love to hear:

"Your Song" (1970) - One of the great songs that can be identified by its first few notes and written in a mere 20 minutes.

"Crocodile Rock" (1972) - His first U.S. number-one single was released when I was 2 years old, and it´s the first song I ever remember hearing.

"Rocketman" (1972) - Haunting when sung by John; captivating when covered by Kate Bush; hilarious when acted out by William Shatner.

"Candle in the Wind" (1974)/"Goodbye England´s Rose"(1997) - Breathtaking as either a tribute to Marilyn Monroe or Princess Diana.

"Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" (1976) - It´s one of the few songs where Elton also wrote most of the lyrics as well as the accompaniment.

"I Don´t Wanna Go On With You Like That" (1988) - What should be said of most ´80s nostalgia.

"I´m Still Standing" (1983) - One of John´s great anti-love songs, about moving on and succeeding in spite of one´s past.

"The Circle of Life" (1994) - Collaborating with Broadway lyricist Tim Rice, it not only launched "The Lion King" with a bang, it introduced John to an entirely new generation of 2-year-olds.

"American Triangle" (2001) - Another musical obituary, this time for Matthew Shepard.

"I Want Love" (2001) - Achingly beautiful, even more with Robert Downey Jr. lip-synching it in the music video.

"Freaks in Love" (2004) -A man and his mutt both equally unsuccessful in the ways of wooing.

Thomas Allen Heald hopes you don´t mind, he hopes you don´t mind, that he put down in words, how wonderful life is with Elton John in the world

Billy Joel and Elton John coming to Salt Lake City

video:

City
March 25th, 2009 @ 6:32pm
By Keith McCord

SALT LAKE CITY -- Probably two of the most famous musicians around, Billy Joel and Elton John, are going to reunite for their so-called "Face 2 Face" tour. Concert promoters announced Wednesday that the two will perform at EnergySolutions Arena November 20.

They had so much fun on their previous tours together, Billy Joel and Elton John have decided to do it again. This will be their second visit to Salt Lake; they were here previously in January 2001.
"This is a big show. This show is selling out everywhere," said Jim McNeil, president of United Concerts.
To have two superstars on the same stage is rare, but for long-time fans of these two "Piano Men" the chance to see them perform each other's tunes and play with each other's backing band mates is a special musical event.
"It's an amazing show, having the two of them on stage together and the number of hits between the two of them. I don't know any two artists that would have that many hits," McNeil said.
Billy and Elton first went on tour together in 1994. It was such a popular show they did it again in 2001 and 2003. Look for this tour to extend well into next year.
McNeil says the show is popular because the songs are classic and still as good to listen to today as they were two decades ago. He says the energy between Billy Joel and Elton John during their performances is high.
"I think they love to perform. That's what they do. They're entertainers, they're on stage, they're both consummate live performers. In this case, one plus one equals three," McNeil said.
Tickets go on sale Monday, March 30, at 10 a.m., and the show is expected to sell out. This coming Friday, March 27, you'll have a chance to win two tickets to the show on KSL 5 News in the morning from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Elton John to work with Alberta Ballet

The Ottawa Citizen

Published: Thursday, March 26, 2009
First Joni Mitchell, now Elton John.
After the phenomenal success of Alberta Ballet's collaboration with folk music icon Joni Mitchell two years ago, the company announced Tuesday a new collaboration with an even bigger star -- Elton John.
The British pop star was "enthralled and inspired" by the Mitchell ballet, The Fiddle and the Drum, and agreed to work with Alberta Ballet and its artistic director Jean Grand-Maître on a new work.

"I am ecstatic to be able to create this new production and I know that it will most certainly capture the interest of the entire world," Grande-Maître said in a statement.
Described as a "semi-abstract ballet set to the music of Sir Elton John," the performance will debut in Calgary on May 6, 2010, before moving to Edmonton on May 11.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Thursday, March 26, 2009

In honor of Sir Elton John´s 62nd birthday Wednesday, we opted to celebrate by assembling a new edition of EJ the DJ for Buzz readers.
So what exactly is EJ the DJ?
Well, whenever we have a conversation with the Peachtree Road resident, we ask John, arguably the world´s biggest music fan, to let us in on what he´s currently listening to.
We essentially snatched the idea from the pop star´s decades-long tradition of popping by radio stations here and across the pond to spin his favorite new artists.
As usual, John delivered a diverse batch of tunes and artists, a few of which can´t be instantly obtained in the U.S., even if a multitude of record shops still existed.
First up, Sir Elton is hooked on the single "Walking on a Dream" from Australian duo Empire of the Sun. The MGMT-esque pop pairing is a collaboration between the Sleepy Jackson´s Luke Steele and Pnau frontman Nick Littlemore. The single and remixes currently can be downloaded off iTunes. Empire´s full debut album is due stateside April 21.
"They´ve got a terrific sense of melody," John told us. "I was just listening to it again this morning."
Forever a supporter of live music, John -- currently on tour with Billy Joel -- won´t get to catch two of his current fave acts in Atlanta.
He had to miss Grammy-winning phenom Adele´s St. Patrick´s Day gig at Variety Playhouse (he was an early supporter).
He´s also working when singer-songwriter James Morrison gigs April 27 at the Loft in Midtown.
The singer has been keeping a watch on Morrison´s latest single, "Broken Strings," a duet with Nelly Furtado.
"It´s a brilliant song," said John. "I just hope it does a bit better on the charts over here. I like him a lot."
The biggest curve ball Sir Elton tossed us?
He´s loving "Hurricane," the crazy good new Grace Jones album. The main problem? It´s not yet available on these shores or on iTunes for that matter. Amazon.com is stocking imported copies, however.
"It´s a shame more people in the U.S. haven´t heard it," John said. "I love it, and [the song] `Williams´ Blood´ is [expletive] amazing. She sounds great. It´s a great return for her. You have to hear it!"

Además de "Candle in the wind", "Don"t let the sun go down on me", "Sorry seems to be the hardest word", "Empty garden" y "I"m still standing".

"I guess that"s why they call it the blues", "Sad songs", "Nikita", "A word in spanish", "I don"t wanna go on with you like that", "Sacrifice", "Club at the end of the street", "The one", "The last song" y "Believe", son otros de los temas.

Scissor Sisters I Don't Feel Like Dancin'

Scissor Sisters - I Don't Feel Like Dancing

Universal

Here, folks, is the first single from the Scissor Sisters' new album "Ta-Dah." Good news for the sisterhood- it's fantastic! Huge success on a first release often cripples the creative mind of the artist, but here there's no sign the Sisters have lost an ounce of original brilliance. The instantly catchy "I Don't Feel Like Dancing" is danceable right out of the box. A groovy mid-tempo bounce and great songwriting keep this one on repeat mode. The Scissor Sisters have always been compared, even mistaken for, Elton John, so it's pretty exciting to see Elton John credited with songwriting and piano for this single! It's definitely a match made in heaven and a sublime pleasure to hear. There are more remixes, singles, picture discs, and a tour to come; but what you need to know right now is the Scissor Sisters have finally released their second album, and from the sound of the lead single, it's a successful return for our beloved Sisters. High marks because I'm a huge fan already, and am thrilled no end to see the Sisters back for more fun.

"I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" is the first single from the second album by the American pop band Scissor Sisters, Ta-Dah. It was written with Elton John, who provides piano for the song, and was the band's first top ten single in Australia and Canada.

[edit] Song information

The single was made available on most download services on July 19, 2006 and was released as a CD single on September 4. It became the band's first UK Number 1 single and topped the charts for four consecutive weeks. It ended the year as the UK's fourth best selling single of the year.[1]

The song's tempo, arrangement, use of falsetto vocals, and subject matter have been compared by reviewers in The Guardian and The Sun newspapers to Leo Sayer's 1976 hit "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing".

One of the band members mentioned in a UK radio interview that the song is about staying in at home at night instead of going out[citation needed].

Graeme Garden, in December 2006, had to sing along to this song in the round Pick-up Song on BBC Radio 4 radio comedy show I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue. Graeme is the father of John "JJ" Garden, who is the live keyboardist for the band, and also contributes to certain album tracks as a writer and/or performer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Graeme was able to keep time with the track perfectly.

The song was in the UK Singles Chart for 27 weeks.

The German video-clip show MyVideo Show uses the song as its theme.

It was performed live at the BRIT Awards 2007.

The song has a segment after the first chorus that was composed on the Commodore 64 using the on board SID sound chip in the computer.

The song has also been covered by "Rockgrass" band Hayseed Dixie. The band covers rock/pop songs using a bluegrass style. Don't feel like Dancin' was on their 2007 album Weapons of Grass Destruction.

The song was featured in a commercial for ABC's Private Practice.

[edit] Music Video

The Video uses a combination of stop/start technology and background/foreground illusions, there are also animated talking heads of the various band members and at the beginning and end, a person goes to an advertised poster with the band member's heads on it, moving.

The Video takes place on this poster.

Chester McKee, a contestant on I'd Do Anything appears at the start of the video.

“I Don’t Feel Like Dancing”, the music video, was directed by Andy Soup with Independent Films, with producer Verity White and director of photography Alex Barber. Post production was done by flame artist Ben Robards at Absolute Post and editor Amanda James at Final Cut.[2]

Billy Joel Tickets - Elton John and Billy Joel, Round 2 of Touring

Author : Brent Warnken    4 or more times read
The second incarnation of Elton John and Billy Joel's Face to Face Tour opened March 2 to a full house in Jacksonville, Florida. The duo's massively popular co-headlining tour opener was a three-plus hour event that didn't disappoint any Elton John and Billy Joel fans. Joel's "River of Dreams" was performed early on and after delivering "Allentown" the Piano Man told the crowd, "Speaking of unemployment, we're just happy you're keeping us in business. We're happy to have a job." Despite steep ticket prices, Billy Joel tickets are sure to be in high demand.

The pair last took the stage together for their sold-out tour in 2003, grossing $45.8 million from 24 packed shows (averaging nearly $2 million per night), according to Billboard Boxscore. In response to criticisms that top ticket prices for the Face to Face tour were similar to the famous duo's 2003 dates despite the current state of the economy, John told the ladies of The View in November 2008, "Our ticket prices are the same as you'd see anyone else, but there's two of us. In this day and age, we hope to be getting people value for their money."

Most dates on the 2009 Elton John and Billy Joel tour are configured in 360 degrees which boosts capacity significantly, although the rest of the show is set similarly to their 2003 jaunt, with each performer taking the stage together at the top, then parting ways for hour-long individual sets before meeting up again for encores. The encore on the pair's March 2 show included performances of "The Bitch is Back," a Beatles medley and "Piano Man."

Before the Piano Man and the Rocket Man began touring in tandem, Elton John unleashed a string of hits like "Honky Cat" and "Crocodile Rock" in the 1970s. After enduring personal and career setbacks around the mid-'70s, John made a comeback in the 1980s with "Sad Songs (Say So Much)," "I'm Still Standing" and more hit singles. John continued touring and releasing songs such as the rewrite of "Candle in the Wind" in 1997 in tribute to the late Princess Diana. After being knighted Sir Elton John that same year, John added more to his resume as a humanitarian in addition to remaining a perennial pop star throughout the new millennium.

Long Island native Billy Joel first garnered the nickname the "Piano Man" when he released his iconic album of the same name in 1973. The Long Island native was inspired to start a career in music after seeing the Beatles perform on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, and once he started churning out piano classics like "Say Goodbye to Hollywood," "New York State of Mind," "Just the Way You Are," "My Life" and more, he couldn't stop. Through personal struggles and constant touring and recognition from the music industry, Joel remains the one and only Piano Man. Elton John and Billy Joel will continue on their Face to Face tour while making two stops at Chicago's Wrigley Field this summer, and John even hinted that the tour may continue for years to come. No matter the length of the Face to Face tour, tickets are sure to be in high demand, so check online for Billy Joel tickets.

An olde acquaintance: A Tulsan's Elton John connection

Elton John performs with Billy Joel during their "Face 2 Face" concert at the BOK Center in Tulsa. MICHAEL WYKE/Tulsa World

In 1962, when she was 28 years old, Eddie Faye Gates was trying to make a new home a long way away from her real home.

She had grown up in Preston, attended high school in Okmulgee and gone to college at Tuskegee, Ala., but now Gates was in London, England, where her husband Norman was stationed as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

Back home, Martin Luther King Jr. was making a name for himself as a civil rights crusader and Gates ached to be a part of that, but, instead, she was setting up household at No. 2 Pinner Hill Road in London.

Every day she walked two of her children down the street to the school at 63 Pinner Hill Road and over time she struck up an acquaintance with the kindly lady at 55 Pinner Hill Road, Ivy Harris.

Far from home and away from the action of the Civil Rights movement, Gates said she was depressed at first by England, but Harris and others in the area helped her bounce back.

"She was the sweetest little woman," Gates said. "That sweet little lady was just like a sunshine beam in my life."

Black people were a curiosity in England at the time, a pretty rare sight on Pinner Hill Road, but Gates said people like Harris treated her with respect and kindness. Legally, she had more freedom in England than she would have had back under the Jim Crow laws still in effect in much of the United States.

So, Gates - now back in the United States for many years and a respected author and crusader for the rights of the
survivors of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921 - remembers her time in England fondly, especially the kind people like Mrs. Harris.

Also living in the house at 55 Pinner Hill Road was Mrs. Harris' teenaged grandson, Reginald Dwight.

You may know him by his stage name: Elton John.

The odd couple: In December, Gates called me.
Over the years I've had a lot of telephone conversations with Gates, and I've enjoyed most of them. We've had some pretty spirited discussions, and I've always respected her as a forceful advocate for her causes, especially the survivors of the race riot. We've disagreed at times, but she understands that old cliche that when you disagree with people you don't have to be disagreeable.

She needed a favor. She was going into the hospital and she wasn't going to be able to buy herself a ticket for the Elton John concert.

She told me about her family's connection with Elton John and how she had followed his career over the years. (She has 17 Elton John albums and is especially fond of his "Live in Australia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.")

She wondered if I would be willing to get her a ticket to the concert. She planned to pay for the seat. She just wasn't going to be able to handle the arrangements herself.

These days I prefer opera to rock opera, but there once was a time ....

I'm not particularly proud of the fact now, but once in college I got tickets to a Devo concert so close to the amplifiers that I couldn't think straight, much less hear, for most of the next day. I wore a crimson hooded sweatshirt to the show, and it never smelled right again.

I sat one deck up and behind the stage at a Bruce Springsteen show in Dallas, and loved every minute. I think I wore the same sweatshirt.

But my tastes in music have changed over the years. The last arena concert I went to was Pavarotti at the Mabee Center. I wore a sports coat and a tie.

Still, when I heard Gates' story I knew that on St. Patrick's Day I would be sitting next to her at the Elton John/Billy Joel concert.

It was too good a story not to see the ending.

When friends at American Electrical Power-Public Service Company of Oklahoma, where Gates' husband had worked for 26 years after he retired from the Air Force, heard about Eddie Faye Gates' connection to Elton John, they volunteered to host Gates, her granddaughter and me at the concert.

Show time: So there we were - a 45-year-old opera fan and a 75-year-old woman - doing our own version of the crocodile rock at Tuesday night's concert.

Gates wasn't dancing frantically like some of the people around us, but she clapped along and clearly enjoyed herself.

I wore earplugs and a new hooded sweatshirt. She wore a pant suit.

Thank you, Reginald Dwight, for a good show, and please know that your dear grandmother also had fans in Tulsa on Tuesday night.

Ironik releases new single 'Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)' on April 27 and the track features John alongside grime rapper Chipmunk, The Mirror reports.
John said: "Tupac and Kanye West are two artists I've let sample my records - that shows how much I rate Ironik. It's good to help talent I believe in."
The track is based around a sample from John's 1971 hit 'Tiny Dancer', which first appeared on the Madman Across the Water LP before its use in Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous in 2000.

Een man zonder evenknie.
Zijn indrukwekkendste nummers ('Your Song', 'Daniel', 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me') imponeren al met een minimum aan pianobegeleiding. Aftermath: Elton John and Billy Joel at the Toyota Center

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/rocks/2009/03/aftermath_elton_john_and_billy.php

Photos by Dan Kramer - for more pictures, click here

Let's face it - an Elton John/Billy Joel duo show is critic proof. And as the guy sitting next to me - Dandy Andy Dansby of the Houston Chronicle - said, it's also apparently recession proof. Every ticket in the Toyota Center from the front row mortgage-costing gold seats to the SRO nosebleeds near Mars was sold out.
And while the 59-year-old Billy and 61-year-old Elton came out like fighters - Joel to the strains of "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and John to "God Save the Queen," neither threw any unexpected punches during the generous 3 ½ hour show. And you know what? That was just fine.
Almost every one of the 35 numbers played (save a couple of ones Joel announced "we used to call album cuts") were massive record hits and FM staples, triggering unembarrassed crowd singalongs. Any hipster sullenly bemoaning that the only radio they like involves Thom Yorke would have been pummeled in a maelstrom of suburban fists of fury.
Structured like their previous "Face to Face" tours, the pair opened with a dual set, trading off lines on each other's numbers and trotting out with ballads/wedding reception standards "Your Song" and "Just the Way You Are" early on. The highlight was a spirited "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me."
Fashionista note: Joel's dark business suit and red tie could place him in the Bada Bing's backroom on "The Sopranos," while John's long, colorfully embroidered coast with blue tails seemed to have sprung from some Moroccan castle's closet.
IMG_1682.jpg

For Elton's set, he ballsily opened with "Funeral for a Friend," the long, elegant intro still evocative after all these years, with longtime band members Davey Johnstone (guitar) and Nigel Olsson (drums) anchoring the swirling lament. Greatest Hits favorites "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," "Tiny Dancer," and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" tumbled out, played expertly, albeit with an at times roteness. Not that Dandy Andy and wife Darling Nikki - admitted Elton preferrers - seemed to mind at all.
Sir Elton punched things up closer to the end with "Rocket Man" (featuring an extended, jamming coda) and a more rock-oriented arrangement of "Levon," normally not one of my favorite numbers, but it took on a new life here. "I'm Still Standing" was a rare dip into the '80s though - like Joel's "Allentown" - the images of excessively oiled and limber young men from the videos kept running through my mind and ruined both tunes. And I'm not gay (as Mrs. Classic Rock Bob will attest). Not that there's anything wrong with that. Set closer "Crocodile Rock" had thousands singing along the Elmo-on-amphetamines chorus.
Then it was Joel's turn at the stool. Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of the Bard of Long Island. I have bootlegs. I know the name of his wife (no, not the ex-supermodel and not the one almost young enough to be his daughter, the first one). And my first ever concert was 1984's Innocent Man tour at the Summit. But dammit, those rapid-fire opening notes of "Prelude/Angry Young Man" still get the blood pressure moving.
IMG_1703.jpg

Billy has always been a natural raconteur, peppering his set with jokes, stories, and local references - so he was by far the warmer performer, giving props to the nosebleed sections ("How are those seats over there in Denton?"), those sitting behind his shiny pate ("You're gonna get a lot of head tonight!") and a spinning a yarn about checking out some oil wells near San Angelo he'd bought as investments (Where traveling "just down the road a' pei" was 100 miles). His piano also spun, giving equal face time to most sections. There was also a twirling microphone involved.
With longtime backing band members Mark Rivera (sax) and Crystal Taliaferro (percussion, horns), he energetically plowed through material from the Holy Trinity of The Stranger/52nd Street/Glass Houses ("Movin' Out," "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Only the Good Die Young." Diehards got the deep cut "Zanzibar" complete with tasty flugelhorn solo. The gospel-tinged "River of Dreams" also stood out. And though it was a huge hit with the audience, even I can't defend the speed history lesson of "We Didn't Start the Fire" - though one had to laugh when a huge picture of Elton showed up on the screen during the line "England's got a new queen."
And then it was time for the closing set, which mirrored the first, with a full contingent united 13-piece backing band and 176 black and white keys pumping out "Uptown Girl," "The Bitch is Back," "You May Be Right," and a couple of Beatles covers.
Naturally, the two closed with "Piano Man," the stage just left with the pair of headliners facing each other over their instruments as they swapped observations of politically-savvy waitresses, career military men, and failed novelists. Yes, the song has become corny and a punchline, but it is simply impossible not to sway to the chorus. Even Dandy Andy - egged on by his wife and I - managed a very slight left-and-right body movement. No one can resist the Power of Piano Man!
In a contemporary music world where "crowd pleasing" can sometimes be an insult and stale jokes about soccer moms in the audience and expanding waistlines of Dino-Rockers are commonplace, there is something incredibly comforting in just enjoying a show and watching two popular performers, free of irony.
Joel's Italian restaurant-meeting couple Brenda and Eddie may never get to go back to the green again, But last night, they at least got to disappear into their yearbooks for a little while.

Elton John & Billy Joel tour adds Face2Face concerts for fall 2009

By Allison Reitz
The "Piano Man" and "Rocket Man" have proven to be kings of the road as they run the March leg of their 2009 Face2Face outing. Now, touring partners and worldwide music icons Elton John and Billy Joel have unveiled more concert dates this fall.
Two more performances have been added to the co-headlining run for November 4 and 7 at KeyArena at Seattle Center in Seattle, WA. The November dates mark the fourth leg on the duo's Face2Face tour, which includes the current March performance schedule, as well as concert blocks in May and July.
John and Joel recently announced that the summer tour leg would start with the first-ever concert at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. However during initial on-sales for the event, an error with Tickets.com's system temporarily limited access to the tickets. After the issue was corrected, additional tickets were released as an apology for the inconvenience.
Six additional dates have since been added to the summer tour, including July 16 and 21 performances at Wrigley Park in Chicago, IL. The most current version of the complete 2009 itinerary is outlined below.
Each night of the tour features the legendary performers seated at twin pianos and trading vocals. Joel and John follow the title "face to face" routine with separate sets before closing the night with another joint performance, backed by both artists' supporting bands.
The popularity of both performers has locked their position on TicketNews's exclusive weekly event rankings. Hosting venues have also profited from the tour, rising to top spots in weekly venue rankings during their Face2Face on-sales.
The pair's next performance is scheduled for March 21 at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, TX. The first round of Face2Face concerts concludes with March 28 and 30 shows at Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.
Elton John & Billy Joel updated itinerary:

Rui Alexandre Coelho | destak@...

I confess to being no great fan of Elvis Costello's music and he opens each episode of this musical chat show by reinterpreting one of his guest's well-known tunes. But he makes a pretty good fist of it.

Tonight he interviews Elton John, if interview is the right word. Sir Elton does most of the talking and virtually takes over the show. Perhaps this is not so surprising, as he also gets a credit as executive producer.

Lots of anecdotes from John's past, some of which are very amusing, but further episodes promise more, with Tony Bennett and even Bill Clinton coming up

Elvis Costello and Elton John to Make a Television 'Spectacle'

http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/Spectacle:_Elvis_Costello_with...

LONDON, NEW YORK and TORONTO, April 2, 2008 /PRNewswire/ -- Two of the most respected musicians in the world will collaborate on an extraordinary new television series.
"Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..." will be hosted by its namesake and produced in conjunction with Sir Elton John's Rocket Pictures. Elton John will be one of the program's Executive Producers.
Spectacle web ad
Spectacle web ad
The series will air beginning later this year, on CTV in Canada, Channel 4 in the UK and Sundance Channel in the US. FremantleMedia Enterprises, will handle sales of the show to the rest of the world.
Conceived to provide a forum for in-depth discussion and performance with the most interesting and influential artists and personalities of our time, the show fuses the best of talk and music television.
"Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..." promises to be an unpredictable and unprecedented television experience. The series of 13 one-hour programs will feature everything from intimate one-on-ones with legendary performers and notable newcomers to thematic panel discussions, with a variety of performance elements including unique collaborations, acoustic and impromptu "illustrative" demonstrations of the creative process, and some original interpretations of others' songs by Costello.
The program's eclecticism and depth reflect its uniquely qualified host. Elvis Costello is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee; a Grammy and Ivor Novello Award-winning (and Oscar-nominated) songwriter and performer comfortable in almost every genre imaginable; a musicologist of formidable breadth and knowledge; a contributor to Vanity Fair Magazine; and a noted wit whose stint as guest host on The Late Show with David Letterman won rave reviews.
Explaining his approach to the program, Elvis said, "I'm not interested in extracting some dark secret. I'd rather hear about a bright secret, a deep love or a curiosity that might be otherwise obscured by fame. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk in complete thoughts about music, movies, art or even vaudeville, then frame it with unique and illustrative performances."
Executive Producer Sir Elton John added, "Elvis Costello is the foremost expert on popular music. I thought it would be sensational to use his knowledge and intelligence to explore the artistry of musicians and other fascinating people involved in making great music, as well as true music aficionados."
Consistent with Sir Elton John's long-standing commitment to philanthropy and music, the series producers have struck an exciting association with the (Product) RED (http://www.joinred.com) campaign created to raise awareness and money for the Global Fund (http://www.theglobalfund.org) to fight AIDS in Africa. Select program excerpts and performances will be distributed in a variety of new media and conventional platforms, with a portion of the profits directed to the Global Fund.
"The concept of Elvis Costello hosting a television show was completely irresistible to Sundance Channel," commented Larry Aidem, President & CEO. "Our viewers are enthusiastic fans of music and love stimulating and provocative talk, so it's a fabulous fit."

Review by Ed Rivadavia

Having failed to ignite America (or anything else, for that matter) once again with a commercially-minded album, Saxon did another stylistic u-turn. Rock the Nations featured a slightly rawer sound, a return to anthemic (yet pointless) rockers, and the usual incompetent and unconvincing ballads. Perhaps the only thing of any interest on this desperate album is a guest piano performance by Elton John (who was recording next door) on the aptly titled "Party 'til You Puke."
