Bernie Taupin's He Who Rides the Tiger: A Lyricist Stands on His Own

For many music fans, Bernie Taupin is known, or possibly not known, as Elton John's lyricist. But for those of us who are ardent Elton followers, we know Bernie is much more. It is true he has written himself and John into music history but Taupin is also an accomplished actor, writer and

singer on his own. His latest projects have included the band Farm Dogs.

This release "He Who Rides The Tiger" received very little critical or audience acclaim. Mainly because not many know if it's existence. This is Taupin's second solo project. His first was a spoken word album that came out in the early 1970's. Essentially it was his poetry set to music. The third solo CD is titled "Tribe." Out of the three releases "Tiger," is far superior in regards to its material and overall performance.

The CD is a good representation of Taupin as a writer. The songs do not have the commercial flair of his work with Elton but they are interesting and introspective all the same. "Lover's Cross" brings many issues of relationships to bare. "The Whores Of Paris" takes on a more somber tone and opens itself up on a different level. "Blitz Babies," is a good solid rocking song, while "Approaching Armageddon," seems to try a bit too hard.

I really did enjoy "Valley Nights." It provides the good solid imagery Bernie is known for. Taupin's voice is strong but doesn't stand out as John's. The ideas here are interesting and not the norm for pop songs.

As much as I like this CD it is evident Taupin's work with John is his strongest by far. It has catapulted him into the history books and brought him the fame he deserves. Essentially the CD can be found as a Japanese import. However copies are available on Amazon.com and possibly EBay. Look around, you may also find it at an independent mom-and-pop record store.

Dennis Tufano this time around provides the music. This withstanding, "He Who Rides The Tiger" is an interesting release with worthwhile songs and ideas. Elton joins him as a background singer on this effort. So, if you're an Elton and Bernie fan, this CD is worth adding to your

collection. It would have been interesting to note what John would have done with these tunes had he been presented with them from Bernie.

A“National Portrait Gallery” – NPG

A NPG,

Alguns retratos do acervo:

“Santo Imperador Romano” Masximilian I

Retrato de Shakespeare (óleo sobre tela),
conhecido como “Retrato Chandos”,
atribuído a John Taylor. Primeira aquisição da NPG

Estadistas da I Guerra Mundial.
Maior quadro em altura da Galeria,
pintado por Sir James Guthrie, entre 1924-1930

Diretores Gerais da I Guerra Mundia l(2).

Henrietta Anne (1644-1670), atribuído a Jean Petitot (1607-1691).

  • Billy Joel: An appreciation (of sorts)

Posted in Music by Frank Sennett on July 17th, 2009 at 10:15 am

Earlier this year, Ron Rosenbaum wrote a persuasive, savage takedown of Billy Joel for Slate. Sample riff: “Billy Joel’s music elevates self-aggrandizing self-pity and contempt for others into its own new and awful genre: ‘Mock-Rock.’”

I thought about that essay as I bought tickets to last night’s Billy Joel-Elton John concert at Wrigley Field as a birthday present for my wife, and I reflected on the fact that, while I still think Elton John boasts one of the strongest overall song catalogs of the 1970s, I haven’t had a kind thought for Billy Joel for more than 20 years, pretty much since I saw him perform a Halloween night show at the Rosemont Horizon when I was in college.

And then there we were in the stadium, the rain magically disappearing as the players emerged in the outfield. And was that WGN’s Dean Richards taking the stage? A young Don Rickles? Nope–it was BJ himself, decked out in suit and tie and ready for bidness. And that’s when I flashed back to that Rosemont concert in the ’80s and recalled what an amusing entertainer Billy Joel is live. He’s a wisecrackin’ showman, a five-and-dime Springsteen, and he manages to out-ham Elton John, which is simply astonishing.

There was Billy using geographically correct references to Cicero and Aurora in apologizing to the right-field rooftop patrons with terrible sightlines and the upper-deck fans with their asses pointing at Clark Street. “Those are shitty seats,” he said. “And you paid for them! Thank you!” There was Billy dropping repeated ironic references to his third divorce, vigorously shaking his head no and then quickly nodding yes as he sang, “got a good wife, got a good life.” There was Billy apologizing for his one stage effect, the piano switching from stage left to stage right while he played, adding sardonically that he had to do something “to keep the ticket prices low.” There was Billy pretending to be attacked by a fright wig someone tossed onstage. There was Billy posing seductively on the piano as Elton started in on a ballad. There was Billy doing mike-stand tricks while belting “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me.” And there was Billy launching into verses of “Chicago” before the evening-capping “Piano Man,” which was sorta ruined but sorta not by the screeching sing-along rendition of the hell-beast trixie wobbling behind me. (Hi, Katie! Hope you have a two-day hangover!)

By the encore set, Elton and Billy had the ruddy glow of two guys who’d just wrestled over the last bottle of vodka backstage. To be fair, though, they did play a high-energy three-hour show, and they both seemed delighted to be there. After giving myself over to Billy’s antics, I was, too.

    CHART ATTACK!: 7/20/74

    by Jason Hare

Hi again, everyone! Thanks for all the fantastic comments on the all-Michael Jackson edition of CHART ATTACK! Did you notice that Motown jumped all over his death and released Michael Jackson: The Stripped Mixes? And it’s scary to think that this is only the tip of the iceberg. But that’s all I’m going to say about it — I’m all MJ’d out and I imagine you are, too — so this week, let’s go back a full 35 years and see what was at the top of the charts for the week ending July 20, 1974!

    4. Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me — Elton John (download)

I’m glad I took the time go back and re-listen to this song for this week’s post. Like so many of Elton’s hits — this one, “Your Song,” “Daniel,” “Rocket Man” — it’s just been played to death on the radio, and I have a hard time even listening to it all the way through at this point.

This time, though, I decided to focus on the backing vocals. And I wound up falling in love with this song all over again. The backing vocalists are Toni Tennille, Bruce Johnston and, most notably, Carl Wilson, doing sublime work. Listen to how tight those vocals are: how they slide up perfectly together, how Carl effectively eliminates the need for horns near the end of the chorus (though the horns in this song are fantastic as well), and how beautiful he sounds echoing Elton’s “don’t let the sun.” I just love it. I’m also going to take a moment and be thankful that Elton didn’t invite Mike Love into the studio. Can you imagine? “Elton, this song is okay, but I think it’d be a lot more groovy if you added a little ‘don’t let the sun ba da ba doobie dow dow’ in there.” And then, to an interviewer: “…And that’s how I came to co-write Elton John’s biggest hit.” God, everything in this world makes me hate Mike Love a little more.

It’s not just the backing vocals. It’s that beautiful opening piano riff, the aforementioned horns, the strings, the fact that Elton takes a full two minutes to build to the chorus, and his genuine vocal. Yet as beautiful and majestic as this song is, Elton hated recording it. Straight from Songfacts:

Elton was not satisfied with any of his vocal takes, and the producer Gus Dudgeon had fits trying to mix all the voices and instruments that went into this. In Philip Norman’s book Sir Elton: The Definitive Biography, Dudgeon said, “When Elton recorded this track, he was in a filthy mood. On some takes, he’d scream it, on others he’d mumble it, or he’d just stand there, staring at the control room. Eventually, he flung off his headphones and said, “Okay, let’s hear what we got.” When Gus played it for him, Elton said, “That’s a load of ******* crap. You can send it to Engelbert Humperdinck, and if he doesn’t like it, you can give it to Lulu as a demo.”

“Sun” peaked at #2 on July 27th, but it had greater success in early 1992, when it reached #1 as a duet between Elton and George Michael. And as you might expect, I love this version. Like the original, it reached its saturation point long ago, courtesy of the Lite-FM radio stations, but it’s really quite good. Though he has a habit of unnecessary vocal embellishments, George Michael remains a fantastic interpreter of works by a number of artists, most notably Elton (this one and “Tonight” from Two Rooms), Stevie Wonder (many songs, but I love his “They Won’t Go When I Go”) and Queen (admit it, his “Somebody To Love” was the only cover worthy of Freddie Mercury at that whole tribute concert). If I have the confusing Wikipedia details right, the audio of the live version was recorded at Wembley Stadium in March of 1991, parts of the video were shot in California, where George was rehearsing in an airport hangar, and the full video performance was shot in Chicago that October. After watching the video a million times, I fully believe that the audience knew the performance was being recorded, but had no idea that his special guest star was going to show up. Full-on geek admission: I get chills every time he introduces Elton.

http://www.lacapital.com.ar/contenidos/2009/07/17/noticia_0060.html

Y con el single “I Can't Stand Still” sigue diciendo: sigo aquí.

Elton's Collaboration with Bono, Chris Martin & Sting...

Posted: 18 Jul 2009 06:38 AM PDT

See Sir Elton's new collaboration with Sting (The Police), Bono (U2), Chris Martin (Coldplay), Snoop Dogg, Slash (Guns n' Roses) and Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen).

"Dove of Peace" is featured at the conclusion of the new blockbuster comedy flick now in cinemas.

Wrigley Field Review

Posted: 18 Jul 2009 06:18 AM PDT

It was the meeting of a knight and a brawler, a U.K. glam-pop prince and a Bronx bomber. Elton John (Sir Elton to us paupers) and Billy Joel shared the stage Thursday at Wrigley Field, but little else.

The two piano players who dominated pop radio in the ‘70s and ‘80s presented contrasting styles that didn’t always mesh. John entered in a sequined tux and tinted glasses, a more restrained version of his Liberace-on-acid ‘70s look. Joel, meanwhile, could’ve passed for a stock broker with his tan, salt-and-pepper goatee and sports jacket.

John was mostly business, focusing intently on music that has held up well. Joel cracked wise in a lousy Chicago accent, told jokes and mugged a lot. His music had a similar attention-demanding brassiness.

Between the two, they offered a set that could’ve been lifted from their first tour together, in 1994 --- not that anyone in the audience seemed to be complaining. The John-Joel juggernaut is one of the more lucrative tours in a recession-racked summer, despite top tickets that cost $175 plus service fees. Wrigley was sold out of 40,000 tickets (some seats remain for the duo’s encore Tuesday at the same location), and Joel squinted toward the upper-grandstand from his grand piano in center field and cracked, “Those are [lousy] seats and you actually bought ‘em --- thank you very much.”

They came and they spent because these graying giants offered 35 tunes that have become staples of oldies radio and karaoke bars, while providing endless fodder for YouTube parodies and tributes. The voices of the two headliners have frayed a bit; John’s is noticeably deeper and Joel has lost considerable range. But the songs have hung around. As one fan in my section said, “Everyone here knows every word.”

The two piano players faced each other at the outset and swapped verses on four crowd-pleasers: John’s “Your Song” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” and Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” and “My Life.” Though intriguing to imagine the two taking on each other’s songs, the opening face-off had the schmaltzy aroma of a Vegas show, complete with the requisite preening.

But when Joel exited and left the stage to John, the show took off. His five-piece band did its share, especially Bob Birch, whose supple, melodic bass lines were like little songs in themselves. The rococo rock flourishes of “Funeral for a Friend,” the avant-pop orchestrations and percussive piano of “Madman Across the Water,” the fresh gospel take on “Levon” – John brought new energy and ideas to songs that are more than three decades old. “Rocket Man” was his trump card; an extended coda found John playing a pensive solo against Davey Johnstone’s acoustic guitar, then shifting into Professor Longhair-like New Orleans mode.

Joel was next. His self-deprecating Every-mook approach has limited charm and wore thin quickly. Like John, he drew heavily on the music of his youth for inspiration, rejiggering everything from doo-wop to the Beatles. But his songs couldn’t match the elegance of John’s ballads or the swing of his counterpart’s rockers. Instead, Joel’s songs suggested someone jabbing you in the chest to provoke a fight – there’s no other way to describe the truly annoying “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” the “ack-ack-ack” of “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” or the parody-as-travesty of “It’s Still Rock ‘n’ Roll to Me.”

Sometimes Joel just appeared to be trying too hard, cramming too many ideas into his arrangements and too much shtick into his presentation. Whereas John was the consummate pro, Joel (at 60, two years younger than John) resembled the over-eager apprentice.

But Joel got the last word. As the fans stood and swayed at the finish, it was his “Piano Man” they were singing. And like the song says, they put plenty of bread in his jar.

CONCERT REVIEW | BILLY JOEL & ELTON JOHN

Pop-music legends swap songs, share spotlight
Wednesday,  July 15, 2009 12:47 AM
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Two of pop music's greatest entertainers partied like it was 1994 last night in a sold out Nationwide Arena.

Fifteen years ago, singer-pianists Billy Joel, 60, and Sir Elton John, 62, first toured together, including an appearance before more than 60,000 fans at Ohio Stadium.

In 2003, they hit the road again to more than 18,000 fans in Nationwide Arena. So the third time they've been "Face 2 Face" (the tour's name) may not have been as memorable an event as that first concert, but musically, it was just as great.

The three-hour-plus show, presented "in the round" at heavy-metal volume, began with two pianos emerging from beneath the three-tiered stage. Then Joel, wearing a black suit and purple tie, took his bows, with John, wearing sunglasses, a long black coat, purple shirt and silver shoes, following.

The two piano men, facing each other, swapped lead vocals on each other's signature songs - Your Song (John) and Just the Way You Are (Joel). Then came two more duets, Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me, with John's band, and My Life, with Joel's.

Each band's twin drummers and their kits, along with the synthesizer players and their keyboards, also emerged and disappeared from the stage after each song. The other neat thing was how much each singer sounded like the other, and you could tell that the two singers enjoy performing together.

Joel's piano disappeared from the stage, and he walked off to let John and his band play a blistering set. John and his five-man band (including longtime cohorts Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums) roared through their opener, Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

John's set lacked the strange videos and props that he had at his "Red Piano" concerts at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, but the hits kept coming, one after another: Daniel, Rocket Man, Philadelphia Freedom, I'm Still Standing and Crocodile Rock among them. John's vocals are deeper than ever, but his gospel-inflected piano playing is still a joy to hear.

Joel also played a number of his hits (Movin' Out, Only the Good Die Young, We Didn't Start the Fire and She's Always a Woman among them), but his excellent performance featured many of his better album tracks, including Zanzibar, Angry Young Man, Don't Ask Me Why and Italian Restaurant.

Every now and then, his piano would rotate, which the singer said was his main special effect. Joel's solid band (especially frenetic percussionist Crystal Taliefero), his fine playing, decent singing and showmanship (including putting a verse of Hang On Sloopy and spelling O-H with his arms during into River of Dreams) made up for any lack of pyrotechnics and fog.

"I'm Billy Joel's father," the now-bald, goateed Joel quipped, one of several pokes at himself. However, on a more serious note, he said before playing the hard-luck anthem Allentown, "We're all musicians up here, and we're very thankful to have a job. Thank you."

The two piano men teamed up again to rock out the concert, swapping vocals on the hits I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues, Uptown Girl, The Bitch is Back, You May Be Right and Benny and the Jets with their combined bands. A little after 11 p.m., the show finally came to an end with the two piano men singing playing two more of their signature songs, John's Candle in the Wind and Joel's Piano Man. Fifteen years after they first toured, the Joel/John concert pairing is still one of the best in popular music.

Just The Way They Are

This past Saturday the husband and I played at Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous because the husband, through his work connections at The Borg, somehow garnered two free tickets to the best concert in town this summer. Since this is SO not our every day life, we actually went shopping to purchase clothes suitable to wear to an event as high class as the one we attended.

Because, you know, I usually walk around in stained capris, plain jeans or yoga pants. Ahem.

So... what exactly does one wear to an event with your husband's boss' boss that includes a party bus driving through downtown D.C. so that you can tailgate in a gravel parking lot before walking one block to a baseball stadium to attend an outdoor music concert in an over-the-top fancy corporate suite? Yeah, I didn't have a clue either, but I came up with a cute little tank toppy shirt and a long, twirly skirt.

I ended up looking like a hippie amid a crowd of Frat Boys, but whatever - the husband said I looked cute anyways. You'll have to take his word for it, though, cuz I totally forgot to take a picture of myself (or should I say HE forgot to take a picture?). I did, however, remember to take a picture of the gravel parking lot tailgating. Because that was kind of funny, y'all.

tailgating where we maybe possibly weren't supposed to

After about an hour of tailgating, we headed over to the corporate suite for more partying before the concert even began. Wasn't it smart of everyone to load up on liquor before listening to two of the most popular performers in pop history? Yes, y'all, go ahead and hate me now. I saw Billy Joel and Elton John in concert. Yes, I did. And I must say that it was really wonderful, but I feel bad that you weren't with me.

(I really do.)

When Billy Joel and Elton John first walked out on stage, I started counting the minutes until Sir Elton had his first hissy fit. Because, even though none of us has actually met the man, we ALL know what he's like. And, as expected, I didn't have long to wait. He stormed off the stage within the first 15 minutes while yelling a few choice curses words because of some technical difficulties.

Sir Elton John and Billy Joel, before the hissy fit

Actually, to be fair, Sir Elton hung around on stage for quite some time while the crew tried to fix said issues. How long, y'all ask? Well, Billy Joel improvised a couple of songs, including Yankee Doodle and Battle Hymn of the Republic. Joel even threw off his coat and ran to help the technicians laying on the floor, under Sir Elton's piano, trying to fix the sustain pedal. When that didn't work, Billy Joel joked, "wanna trade pianos?"

And that's when the hissy fit happened. Because - you know - Sir Elton is Sir Elton... kinda like me in the mornings. Our little group hardly noticed the delay, though, because we just headed inside to eat and drink more.

quite obviously, some drunk person took this photo... because
I would never forget to switch my camera from manual to
automatic focus.
.. and where did all of the food go anyways?

After that little bit of chaos, they changed up the format of their regular Face2Face show, having Billy Joel perform first. Which was totally alright with me because, while the rest of the crowd in our suite seemed more familiar with Sir Elton's songs, I - being YOUNGER - knew more of Billy Joel's songs.

I'm just saying...

It felt amazing to hear the crowd sing along with most of the songs that night. I mean, think about it, how many Elton and Joel songs do you know by heart? Quite a lot, I'd venture to say. And sing them, we did. We were really loud, y'all, especially since I think the baseball stadium was more crowded for that one concert than for all of this season's baseball games combined.

(Did y'all even know D.C. has a baseball team now? No? That's probably because they stink.)

I enjoyed every minute of the concert, as did every member of our group. Although some of us enjoyed the night a little more than others.

thankfully, this IS his wife

Billy Joel outdid himself, performing such favorites as Allentown, Zanzibar, She's Always a Woman (with some interesting comments about his current/ third divorce), It's Still Rock and Roll to Me and Only the Good Die Young. Sir Elton wowed the crowd with Tiny Dancer, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and a fourteen minute version of Rocket Man, complete with pink flamingos and rainbows shooting across the stage screens.

if I was ever in doubt as to what these lyrics referred to, I now find
the metaphor completely clear... pink flamingos can do that to you

Then they played duets for quite a few songs, including the ever popular Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, You May Be Right, I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues, Candle in the Wind and Piano Man. I really missed hearing Uptown Girl, which they didn't play due to the technical difficulties, but I guess that's alright since I looked more like a hippie than an Uptown Girl anyways.

And I loved 'em just the way they were, hissy fit and all.

I'm SO jealous!!! I told myself that the only artist that I would PAY whatever price to see perform live would be Billy Joel and I missed his concert when he was here, because hubby was on a business trip!

I'm going to listen to my Billy Joel CD's now... Would ya know it --both J and Z know Piano Man?! I play it in the car sometimes. :)

hrmph....so I can not believe you went to that concert and didn't even invite me!! Where are your manners???

I'm not gonna talk to you anymore...well...maybe - if you are lucky!! :)

I like the way you roll - party bus and corporate suite. Now that is the way to attend a concert. Glad it was fun!

I must confess that I am not jealous. Because of the whole hearing loss thing and really strict parents I did not grow up listening to them. At all.
I wouldn't have been even able to name one Billy Joel song (yes, indeed, the title geek is rather fitting!)
Glad you had a good night. Loved the pic of the guy "choosing a seat".

Sooo totally jealous :) How fun!

I am SO. JEALOUS. Seriously, I am... but more about Billy Joel than the whole pink flamingo part.

Istn't it fun to have occasions where you have to buy a new outfit and hope you get it right? Men just have no idea the agony that corporate wives go through when we're invited to these things!

What a fun night! Isn't it a CHORE to find things to wear? Ugh :) Sounds like you found a sweet outfit.

My brother-in-law is a HUGE Elton fan - I'm guessing he's seen him in concert close to 100 times - he's been all over the world to see Elton - it totally cracks me up! I'm guessing he was at that show...
I'm glad you and the hubby had a nice night out...too bad the Tongginator didn't get to see your skirt, she would have been in heaven!

I'm not jealous. Ok, I'm totally jealous.

My sister saw them when they came to Atlanta. I am so mad at myself that I didn't get tickets. My sis said it was so good. I have to ask her if she got to see a hissy fit like you did.

I'm gonna go pout now...

Did you buy Miss T the butterfly wand that the junk man was selling in front of the gates? It lit up and everything! I was going to get it for her, but I didn't want to carry it around all night, as some of us had to take public transportation that involved being underground with urine smells.

That was a really fun post! Even if I hate concerts unless there's a maestro and violins involved. I know, you think it's cuz I'm old. But really? I hated concerts when I was 19.

But srsly, that was a fun/funny post!

Sir Elton John has provided two possible dates for his money-spinning concert at Vicarage Road next summer.

The superstar marked his 62nd birthday in March by regaining his title as Watford’s Honorary Life President and announcing he would like to hold a concert to raise money for possible signings.

This week, Hornets’ chief executive Julian Winter confirmed the event is still scheduled to take place.

Winter said: “We know he is definitely going to do one. He has given us two dates, we are just trying to nail him down for one.”

Sir Elton raised around £1.3m for his beloved club in June 2005 as part of the ‘Buy Back the Vic’ campaign.

Winter confirmed the concert will once again take place at Vicarage Road despite the logistical problems and building work currently taking place.

He said: “Logistically it is complicated but it kind of loses its reason for being if it is taken elsewhere, so it is definitely going to be at Vicarage Road.”

ELTON JOHN - MADMAN SESSIONS DEMOS

ELTON JOHN
The Madman Sessions Demos [3378645, 1CD]

I was about to listen to my copy of Elton’s Rare Masters when I discovered that the 1992 2CD set had spiderweb-like smudges on both the discs. I wanted to find out if the version of Rock Me When He’s Gone on Rare Masters was as good as on this “sessions” bootleg.*

In any case, the rest of the tracks on this rare bootleg are all previously unreleased. It’s just Elton accompanying himself on the piano. The tempo on most tracks is slower and he’s in great form. Lively vocals, with a lot of feeling. Check out Levon, always a slow, sensitive ballad. Now you get to hear, Elton in his prime, belting the song solo.

According to Elton’s schedule, the Madman song was first attempted for the Tumbleweed Connection album in 1970. A first “original” version is tacked onto the new deluxe edition of Tumbleweed Connection. But this version here is supposedly the demo, no strings, no band, just the piano.

The remainder of the songs, Rotten Peaches and Goodbye are all played solo in the same enthusiastic fashion. The Madman album was Elton’s fourth, it was a big production with Paul Buckmaster putting up an epic soundstage with strings and horns. It also was the first album with Davey Johnstone on guitar. In England, the album languished at #41 but surged to #8 in the U.S.

In the movie, Almost Famous, Tiny Dancer was the movie’s theme about the fragile nature of fame. Likely Madman Across The Water was Elton’s most ambitious album at the time. It secured his status as a cult artist from across the pond. He gained a larger, loyal following but lost his cult status as he launched himself as a superstar with the hard rock Honky Chateau, targeting an American audience. He would never make an album like Madman again.

Like the album, this boot is an acquired taste. Thanks to yogilou who shared this on Dime. Thanks also to Ziggyt for the artwork.

Sir Elton and Billy Joel -- Face 2 Face in Nats Park

http://www.runindc.com/2009/07/sir-john-and-billy-joel-face-2-face.html

The Rocket Man with the Piano Man

Getting together after playing the finale -- Wow, they want the entire 9 innings and kept us on the edge of our seats.

Sir Elton thanking the warm Washington welcome

Amazing pic of Billy Joel hitting piano with rubber mallet singing "You May be Right"

I run with Elton John, almost every day -- on my Ipod Nano that is.

Elton John was my childhood star in the 80's when I would sing the lyrics to "Uptown Girl" everyday in school.

Last night, my dream came true for me.

Two of the music industry's finest piano men, Elton John and Billy Joel toured the Nation's Capital at Nats Park, and I had the pleasure and good fortune to be invited for a complimentary show -- Yes, I was given free seats -- you wouldn't believe it -- my Genie was extra gracious last night.

Billy Joel was my first concert 23 years ago and I had never seen Elton John live.  Next to the Inaugural Concert at the Lincoln Memorial, this was the best concert I have ever attended.

The high tech and snazzy stage and background LED made for a fun light show -- better than any fireworks after Nats games.

The ballpark was full  -- I had never seen so many people in at Nats Park -- even when the Red Sox came to town.  The Field crew transformed the baseball field into a great concert park almost overnight.  Amazingly, like for the Nats games, I was able to find parking just 3 minutes away on Half Street.

Needless to say, I was quite thrilled after my Solomons bike ride to attend the inaugural concert at Nats Park -- my stomping grounds and event that will live permanently.

I was able to get great 3rd base field seats with awesome views of Elton John -- he was about the distance from the pitcher's mound to home base.

Performing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"

The entire concert consisted of 31 songs over 3 1/2 hours.  All the songs they played were oldies -- from the early 80's and back -- my kind of era.

A funny thing happened when Elton John broke his pedal and Joel came to the rescue by singing an impromptu but funny "Battle Hymn of the Republic." -- what a great save.

Singing "Piano Man" -- my old time favorite

My all-time favorite line: "He's talking with Davey who is still in the Navy and probably will be in for life" -- I remember listening to this before I joined the Navy and sure enough that was my fate.

Sir Elton waves to the crowd -- here I'm waving back.

This was an experience of a lifetime -- dreams do come true, for those who can afford to sit and wait.

Many times, Elton John got up on  top of his piano.  What a performance -- bought back sweet, tender memories of music I grew up with and still listen to.

The audience got their money's worth.  A baseball park is a great, sentimental venue for a concert for two of our all-time All Stars.

Billy Joel raising his hand and ring finger showing that he is once again single while singing "Piano Man" with Sir Elton.

"Paul is a real estate novelist who never had time for a wife"

Piano Man means a lot to me -- it is an all time great with a depressing underlying story.

The story is people who never do anything with their lives will be caught in the monotonous daily routine of work and have only to look forward to going to the bar on Sat nights.

It is a all time classic with great lyrics and a relevant story -- I find myself humming this song to myself often when I'm running.

Wow -- Rocket Man and Piano Man -- what a incredible Double Header.  And the Nats Win (Finally)!

I love him, the kids and I just watched the episode of the Muppet Show that he was on. I have a set of 'staples', music that was 'popular' when I was growing up that I will always enjoy. I don't listen to the radio now a days, but the songs from my childhood will always be faves of mine.

My friend got him mixed up with John Lennon today. She told me she saw a John Lennon concert earlier in the week. Not! She saw an Elton John concert! And he was late cause he was coming from MJ's funeral show. I have to say I don't think much of tardiness, Mr Lennon.

Piano men John, Joel rally over mishaps

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/jul/13/piano-men-john-joel-rally-over-mishaps/

  • Elton John (left) and Billy Joel greet the Nationals Stadium crowd before their Face-2-Face-tour concert on Saturday. A stuck sustain pedal sent Mr. John offstage initially, and Mr. Joel picked up his set first. (Allison Shelley/The Washington Times)
  • The Nationals Stadium audience salutes Mr. John and Mr. Joel as they performed together and separately during the concert. (Allison Shelley/The Washington Times)
  • A technical mishap provided a welcome note of unexpected drama early on during Saturday's first-ever concert at Nationals Park.

The Face 2 Face tour starring Elton John and Billy Joel doesn't exactly travel light. A giant, sleek black stage in center field, with jumbo screens on the wings, had been erected complete with 40-foot-tall banners showing the artists on their home turf — Mr. Joel in New York; Mr. John in London. Just before the show, two pianos rose through the stage on lifts (Mr. Joel's signature Baldwin on the right and Mr. John's gleaming Yamaha on the left), and the two artists emerged to take their places for a few quick duets before Mr. John's set was to begin.

They kicked off with Mr. John's "Your Song," followed by Mr. Joel's "Just the Way You Are." But by the middle of the second song, it was clear that all was not right onstage. Mr. John was looking askance at his piano and hollering at roadies, one of whom emerged and slid under his piano like a mechanic repairing a leaky exhaust system. Even Mr. Joel gamely took a peek under the Yamaha's undercarriage.

Whatever they tried to do, it didn't work. After a shaky rendition of "Miami 2017," Mr. John walked off the stage in a huff. Mr. Joel's band rallied, took the stage and commenced their set first. Mr. Joel cracked, "This is an authentic rock-and-roll [foul] up. You don't see many of these anymore."

In Mr. John's defense, however, it seems reasonable that an artist of his stature and experience should expect to perform without a jammed sustain pedal.

In the end, the glitch proved to be a little bit of spilt milk in a 33-song musical feast that left all but the most gluttonous adult contemporary fans sated. Mr. Joel's set featured a rapid fire spray of crowd-pleasers, executed without too much frippery or noodling. There is a relentless drive to the melodies in "Movin' Out," "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "Don't Ask Me Why" that Mr. Joel mines to great effect in performance with bombastic piano playing and an energetic singing style.

First attempted in 1994, the Face 2 Face tour's pairing of Mr. John and Mr. Joel almost had to happen. The two are nearly exact contemporaries — Mr. John is 62; Mr. Joel is 60 — and they occupy similar spots in the public imagination as leading piano men in a world of guitar heroes. But up close, it's their differences that shine through. Mr. Joel is unabashedly parochial, with songs rooted in his native New York and a band featuring a core of longtime cronies who match their patron's jocular, in-your-face style. Mr. John is the more cosmopolitan figure, the more gifted composer and player and his accompanists — including bassist Bob Birch and guitarist Davey Johnstone — come off as top-flight players rather than as an enthusiastic bar band. Mr. John's lyrics (written by longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin) are lush with metaphor and imagery, while Mr. Joel's lyrics confine themselves to the here and now.

Mr. John seems to take more liberties with the recorded versions of his songs in performance. A version of "Rocket Man," for instance, stretched out over perhaps 15 minutes, drawing out secondary themes. His playing is extremely precise and considered, and even his quips are more erudite than Mr. Joel's. Apologizing for the mishap with the piano, Mr. John said that playing with the sustain pedal in the down position would make him sound like, "Philip Glass meets Stockhausen."

The pair reunited for eight more songs to close the evening. Mr. Joel seemed distracted — at one point he appeared more interested in swatting flies than pulling his weight on "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues." Mr. Joel's singing voice failed him utterly at points, but he barefaced his way through with a bravura smirk. Mr. John, for his part, seemed resigned to these antics rather than annoyed.

Qualche gioiello ripescato saltando avanti e indietro nel tempo come Burn Down The Mission (da «Tumbleweed Connection» del 1970) e I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues, hit dell’album «Too Low for Zero» dell’83, per ritornare a piè pari negli anni ’70 con Daniel (da «Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player» del 1973), Honky Cat e la mitica Rocket Man da «Honky Chateau » (1972). L’animo pop-romantico di Elton sarà ben sottolineato da Sad Songs (Say So Much) (da «Breaking Hearts», 1984), Take Me To The Pilot («Elton John», 1970), Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word («Blue Moves» 1976), Tiny Dancer («Madman Across the Water» 1971), la toccante Sacrifice («Sleeping with the Past», 1989) e Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me («To Be Continued », 1990).

    Track list
    1. Simple Life – 6:25
    2. The One – 5:53
    3. Sweat it Out – 6:38
    4. Runaway Train (Elton John/Bernie Taupin/Olle Romo) – 5:23 (Duetto con Eric Clapton)
    5. Whitewash County – 5:30
    6. The North – 5:15
    7. When a Woman Doesn't Want You – 4:55
    8. Emily – 4:58
    9. On Dark Street – 4:43
    10. Understanding Women – 5:03
    11. The Last Song – 3:21

Elton John and Billy Joel Concert

    http://www.cmhandcjw.org/2009/07/elton-john-and-billy-joel-concert.html

This weekend we attended the longly await, highly expensive Billy Joel and Elton John concert. It was the first concert to be held at the Nationals Ballpark, which was a little coincidental since we had also seen the first baseball game at the same stadium. CJW bought the tickets months ago, and I had nearly forgotten about them until he had them until a few weeks ago when he reminded me that the concern was coming up.

We took the Metro system to the park since the parking passes were a relatively insane $40 each, and, its a good idea to avoid driving. Of course, things got off to a slow start since most of the Metro line was experiencing delays due to "scheduled" maintenance. I like how they emphasize "scheduled", as if the delays being "scheduled" make it less bad. Anyway, given the recent accident, I don't think anyone was really grousing about the delays -- we'd rather arrive safely and late than ...

So we arrived at the stadium about 20 minutes early when all was said and done, did the necessary business, and settled into our seats. Elton and Billy arrived on the stage about 20-25 minutes late -- I suspect they were waiting since there was a continuous stream of people coming in. Unfortunately, technical problems cropped up in the first sing. Elton's piano peddle (the sustain peddle) was sticking and staying in the sustained position. He was very clearly frustrated, and Billy, being the awesome entertainer that he is, took off his suit jacked and crawled under the piano to give it a once over. Eventually, they gave up, and Billy graciously switched the concert order and went on with his "solo" songs first so that Elton's staff could address the piano issues.

The concert was rougly divided into "solo" hits from Billy, then Elton, and finally the "joint" hits with both. I've never been a super Elton John fan -- perhaps its my age and I'm a little too old to really have gotten into his music -- but I've always been a big Billy Joel fan. In fact, C2 took me to see a musical featuring the music of Billy Joel for Christmas a couple years back . My take away after watching them both is that Joel is a better "entertainer" -- theatrics, dancing, general "bedside manner" John is a much better musician -- his improvisation, piano work, and such really show his musical talent. Its funny, when I was little, my thought I would be good at the piano with my long fingers. Elton John has short stubby fingers and I was amazed at this ability.

All in all, there were plenty of classics to enjoy. "We Didn't Start the Fire" is alway fun. "Allentown" as well. "Rocketman" from John was an extended version that was really cool. "Candle in the Wind" is a classic. And how else do you end such a concert except with "Pianoman" Only two main "complaints" with the concert. We were on the aisle, which is a good thing -- except when you have a few people in your row that need to get out every other song to buy more greasy grub or beer. It started to get annoying after a while and I started to threaten to charge them a toll to get up and let them pass. The other was the sound. I know how incredibly challenging it must be to setup the sound for a place like a ballpark. However, the echo was horrendous, especially in busy piano interludes. I think they could have done a much better distributing speakers throughout the stadium and adjusting the sound system for the time delays to minimize the echo. For much of the concert it was OK, but some times it got really annoying.

Thanks to CJW for arranging the fun event.

P.S. CJW and I had a bit of a disagreement during the concert. Everytime I looked over he seemed to be on his phone texting or surfing. He told me he was "live blogging" to one of his discussion boards. I thought for his $100 ticket he should enjoy the concert and lay off the keyboard. Any comments?

    Me and Captain Fantastic

    http://michaels-mixedmedia.blogspot.com/2009/07/me-and-captain-fantastic.html

Elton John and Billy Joel are playing a concert here in town tomorrow night; my cousin and her daughter are coming to town to see it and they asked me if I was interested in going, and I said, no, I'm too old for concerts. I don't exactly believe that, though I've only seen two concerts in the past few years, and it's altogether possible that I'll never again feel moved to attend a live music event.

But I don't need to see Elton because I saw him in his heyday; it was a great show and I don't want to run the risk of being disappointed in him now. It was 1973, I was a high school senior, and Elton was my idol. I was gay and knew it (though I wasn't exactly out to anyone except myself), but Elton's flamboyance wasn't the main reason I liked him (he wasn't out, either). I discovered him in early 1972, just a few months before he had his first #1 album, Honky Chateau, when a friend turned me on to Tumbleweed Connection, a very non-flamboyant work, almost rustic (though calculatedly and artificially so) with its countryish, folkish sound. It's still a favorite album of mine, and the album's masterpiece, "Burn Down the Mission," is still one of my favorite songs.

His appeal to me was that he was a pop chameleon; he, his lyricist, Bernie Taupin, and his band could do any kind of pop music: rock, R&B, easy listening, glitter pop, bubblegum, art songs, love songs, ballads, whatever. I had always liked piano-based pop, and Elton was a great piano player, a soulful singer, and a damned good songwriter--even when Taupin's lyrics got crazy, Elton's melodies were always compelling. I admit I haven't really followed his career much since the late-80's (and his last really good songs "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That" and "Sacrifice"), but I can still listen to most of his music before that and enjoy it. The Elton albums of my high school and college days, especially Honky Chateau and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, hold up well, and give me my necessary nostalgia fix.

The tickets for the Elton John concert, in October of 1973, just weeks before the release of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, were a birthday present from my mom. It was my first concert and I couldn't have picked a better first. Our seats were way up in the nosebleed section of OSU's St. John's Arena, but Elton's colorful outfits, oversized glasses, and shiny platform shoes were still visible to us, and since one of my friends brought along binoculars, we got some good close-up views. The music was great, and though the glow of nostalgia may color my memories, I can only think a handful of other shows that were as much fun for me: Queen in the mid-70's, Manhattan Transfer in the mid-80's, and Erasure just a couple of years ago.

I wrote down the set list all those years ago, and sadly, only a fragment of my written notes remain, but I'm fairly sure that the set list went something like this:

Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding
    Rocket Man
    Your Song
Madman Across the Water (with a long jazzy piano bit in the middle)
    Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
    Honky Cat
    Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
    Burn Down the Mission
    Hercules
    Levon
    Crocodile Rock
    Daniel
    Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
with an encore of Honky Tonk Women

I hope my cousin and her daughter have a great time, but I've had mine and don't want to risk re-living it for real. I'll re-live it in my memory.

    Elton John News

    F2F Washington Review

    Posted: 13 Jul 2009 06:22 AM PDT

In the interest of full disclosure, I must confess that I'm a big fan of both Elton John and Billy Joel.

So, naturally, there was no question that I'd be anywhere but Nationals Park in Washington last night to see the two piano rock 'n' rollers play "Face to Face." The guys have perfected this "F2F" gig, having played these "in tandem" concerts off and on since 1994.

Oh, what a night it was: a rocking, drama-filled evening with two music legends. The concert began much like the piano guys' past shows.

As the opening theme music boomed throughout the open-air baseball stadium, the two grand pianos emerged from underground, raising up to stage level and laying out 18 feet of pure piano. Soon after, Billy emerged, then Elton. A warm hug, kindly greetings to the capacity crowd, and they were on their way ...

The boys opened with "Your Song," with Billy starting the verses. An appropriate opener indeed. Next came "Just the Way You Are," which Elton kicked off. But not long into the song, Elton stopped playing the piano ... a curious and worrisome sight to any who've seen Elton in concert. It was clear that something was wrong.

Elton dove into the next number, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." But just a couple measures in he abruptly stopped the song. Turned out there were technical difficulties: The sustain pedal on his piano was sticking. Not good. Elton was growing increasingly upset. And Billy tried to calm the situation. He even whipped his suit jacket off and got down on his back under Elton's piano to help what looked like four technicians frantically trying to fix the glitch.

It didn't quite work. But Billy tried. And he quickly ran over to his own piano to play some "filler" music -- "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," to the delight of the crowd. Billy's cute quips calmed the tension a bit. He said at one point: "This is an authentic rock-and-roll [screw-up]! At least you know it's not on tape!"

The piano guys decided to shelve their normal format of performing a few songs together at the beginning, and rather just let Billy go ahead and do his set, which was clear to see was not the original plan. Elton was supposed to do his set first this night. But Billy pulled it off like a pro, and after Elton departed the stage while his piano was being lowered underground and operated on,

Billy dove headfirst into "Angry Young Man." And went full-steam ahead: "Movin' Out," "Allentown," "Zanzibar" (a terrific treat), "Don't Ask Me Why," "She's Always a Woman" (with some cute comments about his current divorce -- No. 3, it is) and then the masterful "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant," followed by "River of Dreams," "We Didn't Start the Fire" (with cute visual of Elton on the display screen during the lyric "England's got a new queen"), "It's Still Rock 'n' Roll to Me" (with Elvis gyrations) and "Only the Good Die Young."

Throughout Billy's set, the crowd was engaged and clearly having a grand time with an old friend. The words, everyone knew. The melodies, everyone adored. Billy was still relevant to this crowd, which spanned the ages. Billy, despite his fame and fortune, is an everyman. The easy-going way, the observational sense of humor, he's the guy next door (who also happens to be ridiculously talented, rich and famous).

After Billy wrapped "Only the Good Die Young," he departed the stage, ending his solo portion of the show. Elton's recuperating piano was soon elevated to stage level again, and the crowd held its collective breath that the piano's surgery was a success. And it was. The haunting intro to "Funeral for a Friend" began, and Elton soon emerged with warm waves to the crowd. As he ventured into his piano intro in the song, it appeared there were still a few (new) issues. But he played through the dreamy song, which morphs so brilliantly and wonderfully into "Love Lies Bleeding."

Elton rolled into the rollicking "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting," and because of the sound issues he was still detecting, his tech quickly resolved things with a couple quick switcheroos of equipment. (Whew!) After "Saturday," Elton, to the crowd, explained the earlier pedal problem and how the notes had been running together. He then thanked Billy and his band for coming to his rescue and playing his set out of order.

Elton barrelled into "Burn Down the Mission," then played an extended version of "Madman Across the Water," which I got the feeling most of the crowd didn't know very well (shame, shame). Next, he played the crowd-pleasing "Tiny Dancer," and then the melancholy "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," which, I admit, is my favorite tune. Elton can't sing the falsetto in the chorus any longer, but makes up for it by having his band sing those parts, while he harmonizes in his lower register. Nice. Very, very nice.

Afterward, Elton stayed in the early '70s with "Daniel" and then a super-extended (14-minute!) version of "Rocket Man," which the crowd seemed to eat up. While not one of my favorite tunes, "Rocket Man" featured several new, beautiful and inventive piano licks.

"Philadelphia Freedom" was next, as everyone, including two ushers, bopped and sang along. Elton was in his groove. He then slid into the percussive "I'm Still Standing" (a brief venture, this evening, into the '80s), then the rousing, playful "Crocodile Rock," which included requisite sing-along. The crowd was fully engaged. And just in time for Billy's re-emergence.

The two men could now pick up where they left off earlier in the night -- with "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." They shared the singing and shared the piano-playing for the rest of the show. The duo ventured into a spirited version of "My Life," with Beethoven's "Ode to Joy" as intro. Then went for "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," "The Bitch Is Back," "You May Be Right" (with Billy "smashing" his sweat-filled towel against his piano to the sound of the breaking glass at the beginning of the song) and "Bennie and the Jets" (quite the crowd favorite).

The fellows slowed it down with "Candle in the Wind" (which they swapped vocals on) and finally, of course, "Piano Man." One sweet note: If I'm not mistaken, I could swear that the crowd (and the guys themselves) sang the words "Sing us a song, you're the Piano Men." Very sweet. Very true. And that they both did.

Sir Elton at The Starkey Hearing Foundation Awards

    Posted: 13 Jul 2009 05:37 AM PDT

Elton John has long been known for his flamboyance and outrageousness. However, when he said Sunday night in St. Paul that "I'd be here every year for these guys," he wasn't being overly dramatic. He sincerely meant it. The piano man with the rose-colored glasses cares that deeply about the Eden Prairie-based Starkey Hearing Foundation.

For the second time in six years, Sir Elton headlined Starkey's "So the World May Hear Gala" at St. Paul's RiverCentre. After effusively saluting Starkey founder and CEO Bill Austin and foundation co-founder Tani Austin as "the most generous people in my life -- ever," Elton played 50 minutes of intimate, heartfelt and uplifting favorites.

This may be the best way to hear Elton John -- in a ballroom with just his Yamaha grand piano (aided unnecessarily by synthesized strings). He was clearly moved by the occasion and delivered unforgettable renditions of "That's Why They Call It the Blues," all syncopated and funky, and "Philadelphia Freedom," all sassy with plenty of black keys. Has he been to New Orleans lately or what?

"Rocket Man" had all kinds of special echo effects (was that because astronaut Buzz Aldrin was in the audience?), and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" was soulful and liberating as he ended it with a big smile and an arched eyebrow. Elton poured his heart into "Your Song," the adventurous "Daniel," the emphatic "Tiny Dancer" and the suitable closer, "Circle of Life," before returning to his seat in the audience.

The only thing that might have been more fitting for a finale would have been to have Gladys Knight, who'd performed earlier in the program, join Elton for their 1982 collaboration, "That's What Friends Are For." But this gala wasn't about all-star anthems; it was about raising money for Starkey missions to bring hearing aids to children around the world.

Sus canciones como "Your song", "Rocket man", "Goodbye yellow brick road" y "Don´t let the sun go down on me", son himnos de una generación.

    Vicarage Rd 2010 Date Imminent

    Posted: 12 Jul 2009 06:47 AM PDT

    08 JUNE 2009
Sir Elton John was in a jubilant mood this week as Billy Elliot, the musical for which he wrote the score, walked away with an incredible ten Tony Awards.

After its phenomenal success on Broadway, the uplifting musical was awarded the coveted best musical gong, and additional awards for scenic design, lighting, sound and orchestration.

The production's British director, Stephen Daldry, was also given the best director trophy, while the three young stars who take turns to play the title role of Billy – Canadian David Alvarez, and US-born actors Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish - jointly won the award for best leading actor in a musical.

Rocket Man singer Elton, who took part in a musical medley during the awards with stars from Broadway shows, missed out on the Tony for top score, but not even that could dampen his mood.

"Thank you for accepting us so beautifully on Broadway," the thrilled star told the audience as he helped accept the best musical award. "We came here at a hard time economically. You opened up your wallets and you opened up your hearts to us. And we love you for it."

Other stars recognised at the annual ceremony, which fetes excellence in American theatre, included Liza Minelli and the late Natasha Richardson, who received a posthumous award.

Guests included Dolly Parton and Anne Hathaway – elegant in a strapless black gown with a voluminous netted skirt. The currently-single Rachel Getting Married actress took her lawyer father Gerard along to the event.

Elton John played at Aberdeen's Pittodrie Stadium in 2004

Aberdeen Football Club is taking legal action over damage caused to
its pitch during an Elton John concert five years ago.

The SPL club claims the concert promoter Marshall Arts Ltd had said
the cost of replacing the Pittodrie pitch would be covered by
    insurance.

However, the club claims it has yet to be compensated for what is said
to be a £36,000 bill after the 2004 concert.

The club has lodged a claim at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Concert promoters for Sir Elton John are
facing legal action from bosses at a Scottish soccer club over claims
the Rocket Man wrecked their stadium's playing field during a 2004
    concert.

Aberdeen Football Club owners allege the turf at the Pittodrie
Stadium was ruined by leaked oil and heavy equipment used for John's
    gig five years ago.

Chiefs at London-based Marshall Arts Limited, who promoted the
sell-out show, reportedly promised the cost of repairing the damage
would be covered by insurance. But the club claims the $54,000 bill
has yet to be settled, according to a suit filed at the Court of
    Session in Edinburgh, Scotland. (PAW/WNWCCB/MJ)

[ Photoset ] I got a sneak peak at Nationals Park today while the
transformation from Major League ballpark to concert venue was in
progress. On Saturday, July 11, 2009, Elton John and Billy Joel will
appear “Face 2 Face” on the stage in center field for fans seated both
on the field and in the stands. The event is the first major concert
in Nationals Park since it was built. I’ve been looking forward to
this concert for a while, so seeing the setup in progress was a real
treat! I also had a strange experience of noting the overtaking of the
stadium for the concert. I’m quite accustomed to “baseball activities”
going on and that’s pretty much it. The warning track is covered in
plastic connecting walkway pieces and seeing a sign outside the
visitors’ clubhouse in the tunnel with “Billy Joel Band Dressing Room”
and a picture of a motorcycle on it was quite cool! (Unfortunately,
the dressing room manager did not think it quite cool when I tried to
photograph the sign - again an odd experience. I guess she didn’t
understand my perspective of being wowed by a clubhouse becoming a
“dressing room”). So I wonder if Elton John earned the home clubhouse?

The first thing I noticed upon arrival was the conglomeration of semi
trucks blocking off Potomac Avenue south of N on the back side of the
stadium. The volume of supplies they must hold seemed impressive, but
once I saw the stage on the field, the sight made more sense. The
sheer amount of scaffolding, chairs, lights, speakers,
port-a-potties(!!), and equipment going into the construction is
impressive, particularly during the limited time available. Plus,
they’ll need to disassemble it all before the Nats return home.

Tickets are still available. Also, expect traffic in the area to be
jammed, so the Nats are suggesting planning for an early arrival. I’m
mostly hoping for an early escape as we have to leave our house at 4
AM Sunday to head to BWI for a long-awaited VACATION! I actually
planned our flights around this concert!

      Elton John rocks Pula Amphitheatre
I just love concerts in roman amphitheatres, the feeling inside those
arenas is always amazing. This time Sir Elton John visited the
Amphitheatre in Pula, Croatia and finished his leg of European tour
with two and a half hours of great playing. Originally scheduled to
perform alone, he changed his mind and came with the whole band which
was actually great as it gave so much power to already powerfull
concert. For us it was work as usuall, except for the fact that when
you're shooting a piano player he's usually seating in one place and
looking down on piano. You're more or less stuck to one position and
wait untill he picks up his head and looks towards audience. It is
hard to make different pictures, so i focused on his emotions and
typical moments. Well Elton did jump around and on a piano a bit after
we were no longer in a pit. Pretty cool stuff and great night at work
    :)

    Welcome Pula!

    Typical Elton

    The moment to catch

We always love those kind of looks from an artist

A bit of walking around the stage

    Hey, Miro , i see you :)

      Nikita
      Elton John (1985)

Every time I hear this Cold War ballad I recall something my father
told me that stopped me in my tracks and left me standing, staring at
him with my mouth open as if I were missing a chromosome or something.

“Joe, the next time you’re out, I want you to pick up that “Nikita”
    song for me.”

You have to realize my father bled tradition country music: Hank Snow,
Porter Wagoner, Johnny Cash and George Jones. Stone cold country: Webb
Pierce, Hank Williams, Red Foley and Lefty Frizzell.

I had to confirm that that he was thinking of the same Elton John song
that I was. He was. Until that moment I wasn’t even totally sure that
my father knew who Elton John was.

“How the heck did you ever hear that song?” I asked him. Scanning
radio stations. The chorus caught him.

As far as I know, other than a few early hits by Elvis Presley, this
was the only non-country song my father ever bought, listened to or
knew existed. After I had obtained the song for him I offered to let
him hear some other mellow Elton John songs. He declined the offer,
    “No, this will do.”

I’ve often wondered if singers ever lay in bed at night wondering if
someone, somewhere is playing one of their songs at that very moment.
I bet Elton would have never guessed his “Nikita” was being blared in
my father’s living room … sandwiched between Ferlin Husky and Bill
    Anderson.

Oh Nikita you will never know anything about my home
I’ll never know how good it feels to hold you
      Nikita I need you so
Oh Nikita is the other side of any given line in time

La scaletta ha proposto Sacrificé Don't let the sun go down on mé 'Candle in the wind'.

The MacDonald Brothers appeared in the third series of the hit talent show The X Factorin 2006. Originally auditioning in Glasgow, the pair made it through to the "Bootcamp" stage of the competition and eventually the live shows. They were the last in the Groups category to be voted out, finishing fourth overall. They were mentored in the show by Louis Walsh.

They attracted certain criticism from judge Simon Cowell during the live shows, as he believed they did not merit their place in the show.[3]

    [edit]Albums

After The X Factor, The MacDonald Brothers released their self-titled debut album with Scottish record label, The Music Kitchen. This reached number one in the Scottish charts and number eighteen in the UK charts.[4]

Their second album, The World Outside, was released on 15 October 2007 and included the song "Runaway (Do You Love Me)", written by Sir Elton John.[5] This reached number 2 in the Scottish Charts.

Their third album, With Love, was released as a limited edition on February 18, 2008 for Mother's Day. This album contained their own renditions of classic love songs and original material.

Their fourth album, Young Celts, was released on October 13, 2008[6] and the brothers attempted to set a World Record for the most in-store performances and signings in a week. The album reached number 8 in the Scottish album charts.

The MacDonald Brothers' first overseas album with Big Jo-ke, in conjunction with Sony BMG Australia, was released.[when?] This album was a compilation of tracks from their first three albums. The duo are scheduled to return to Australia later in 2009 to release their Young Celts album.

    [edit]Tours

As well as touring with other X Factor contestants on The X Factor Live tour, the duo supported Westlife on their 2008 tour, Back Home, for the majority of the UK dates.

The duo have since toured themselves completing three sell-out[citation needed] tours around Scotland.

    [edit]SECC, Choices for Life

During May 2008, The MacDonald Brothers played four songs at Choices for Life, a concert for primary sevens in schools all over Scotland to help them make the right choices about drugs. They sang an extra two songs, "Flower Of Scotland" and "500 Miles".[clarification needed]

C'est la sublime balade "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". Fin juin, l'album sort.

Based on the 2000 film about a young British boy who tries to escape a
future as coalminer by training in ballet, *Billy Elliot--The Musical* feels
like an exemplary screen-to-stage adaptation, making the best use of
composer Elton John's melodic resourcefulness. Fans of John's regular output
need to be warned that this album is show tunes all the way and that they'd
be hard-pressed to recognize the songs as usual fare by the author of
"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Your Song." Still, they really should give
the CD a chance. Fans of musical theater, on the other hand, will need no
prodding. They are likely to be enchanted by this recording, which shows
that John has thoroughly absorbed the genre's classic strain. The show is
very catchy, with well-structured, dramatic songs and some genuine
tearjerkers ("The Letter"). Sir Elton even proves he's listened to great
"jazz hands" classics (some by Kander and Ebb, perhaps) on "Shine," which
even requests some "ol' razzle dazzle." Teaming up not with usual lyricist
Bernie Taupin but with the film's screenwriter, Lee Hall (and its director,
Stephen Daldry), John has written a lovely stage score, as evidenced on this
recording of the London cast. Note that John himself performs three songs
from the show on a bonus CD. *--Elisabeth Vincentelli*

Elton John and Chopard Celebrate the 11th Annual White Tie & Tiara Ball

    http://www.vialuxe.com/Blogs/index.php/2009/07/02/Jewelry/elton-john-and-chopard-celebrate-the-11th-annual-white-tie-tiara-ball

Posted on July 2nd, 2009 Foran No comments

Once again this year, Sir Elton John, and luxury brand Chopard, paired up to host the White Tie and Tiara Ball to benefit the Elton John Aids Foundation. Elton John and Chopard have a long history together: He and Chopard co-President Caroline Gruosi-Scheufele are longtime friends and together have raised nearly $45 million dollars for the charity, through these events.

As the theme of this year’s ball was “Contemporary Art”, Elton John and David Furnish transformed the grounds of their Windsor mansion into an open air art gallery and sculpture garden. Works of art on loan from leading London galleries were displayed throughout the grounds, along side Chopard creations, which were exhibited in Andy Warhol’s “Brillo Boxes”.

The White Tie and Tiara ball is one of the most celebrated and glamorous invitation only fundraising parties of the year. Celebrities and musicians from the US and UK come together to celebrate, have fun and raise money. Event regulars include Elizabeth Hurley, Justin Timberlake and Hugh Grant. Lily Allen, Kate Beckinsale and Kelly Osbourne were also in attendance this year. Though the recent event began as a jovial celebration, it sadly took a turn for the more somber, as news of Michael Jackson’s untimely death spread through the crowd. Elton John performed “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” in tribute, and brought most of the guests to tears.

Chopard and Elton John have also partnered on philanthropic projects such as the Elton John Aids Foundation special edition watches. It is wonderful to see that Elton John and Chopard have so successfully come together to share their commitment to and love for luxury watchmaking with their passionate devotion to philanthropy. Together they have made the foundation one of the world’s leading non-profit organizations.
