Top pop performer: Elton John

Elton John wowed the crowds with two performances in Weybridge at the weekend.

He was there on Friday and Sunday evening, performing old favourites such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Saturday Night's Alright.

An estimated 15,000 flocked to Mercedes Benz World to take in the open-air concert, braving the heavy rain on Friday.

"It was an absolutely amazing night, incredible," said Weybridge resident Anita Whiting.

"When I heard he was coming to Weybridge I snapped up tickets straight away and I'm so glad I did. It was worth every penny."

"The atmosphere was incredible and everybody was bopping. It's a fantastic place for a concert, it was so intimate and the crowds were buzzing."

He then signed autographs for people at the front of the stage before leaving in style in a helicopter. Concert-goers stayed late to party at a disco, in a marquee, provided at the back of the arena.

The concert was held in a specially constructed arena on the Merecdes test track, launching them as a major concert venue.

Elton, who has sold more than 250m albums worldwide during his four decade career, was supported by ex-Coronation Street star Richard Fleeshman. Sugababes and McFly co-headlined on the Saturday.

British rocker Elton John will make his Atlantic Canada debut this fall. (Associated Press)

British music icon Elton John will rock Atlantic Canada this fall.

The pop musician will perform in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador as part of his 2008 Rocket Man tour.

The singer, composer and pianist rose to international stardom in the 1970s, and has sold more than 200 million records during his four-decade career.

The tour is focusing on his No. 1 hits.

It is the first time that the singer and composer, who is known for his flamboyant and often outrageous costumes and glasses, will be playing in Atlantic Canada.

He'll perform at the Halifax Metro Centre on Sept. 26 and 27 before playing at the Moncton Coliseum on Sept. 28 and Harbour Station in Saint John on Sept. 30.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will then head to Newfoundland and Labrador to play at St. John's Mile One Centre on Oct. 2 and 3.

Ticket sales will begin in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador on Friday and New Brunswick on Saturday.

Elton John: The Rocket Man sang many of his hits at the Keepmoat Stadium

SATURDAY night was more than alright for Elton John fans when thousands packed out Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium to see their hero play a two-hour plus live set.

The gig was the third at the town's community stadium - and the only one which will be held this summer.

Footy fan Sir Elton was well aware that the Keepmoat is home to local team Doncaster Rovers.

One of his first acts on the stage was to congratulate the Reds on their promotion to the Championship. He said: "I'd like to congratulate Doncaster Rovers on last year's season - this is a splendid stadium."

The rocker then launched into a set which, unsurprisingly, leaned heavily on his multi-million sellers.

Tracks like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I'm Still Standing, I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues and Are You Ready for Love? were lapped up by the packed audience.

But it wasn't just the top 10 numbers that got an airing - lesser tracks like Levon and Believe were also part of the set.

Rocker Elton finished the gig with a slate of real crowd pleasers, including Crocodile Rock, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting and Philadelphia Freedom.

Un helado para Elton John

La marca de helados Ben & Jerry's ha creado un sabor, en edición limitada, descrito como "la estrafalaria sinfonía del decadente helado de chocolate, mantequilla de cacahuete y galleta con trozos de chocolate".

¿La razón? Celebrar la visita a la estadounidense Vermont, de donde proceden los fundadores de la firma, del cantante británico Elton John.

El intérprete de 'Candle in the wind' está encantado con la idea, "no se me ocurre una manera más divertida de celebrar mi visita", ha asegurado.

El postre ha recibido el nombre de 'Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road', en recuerdo al álbum de los 70 del también compositor y pianista.

El helado, que se venderá sólo en los establecimientos de Vermont, desde el 18 de julio hasta el 25, contó con la colaboración del mismísimo Elton: sugirió que se incluyera chocolate y mantequilla de cacahuete.

Las Vegas— Al parecer Mariah Carey seguirá los pasos de Celine Dion, Cher y Elton John que según fuentes a la recién casada le ofrecieronun show permanente en Las Vegas.

Fuentes dicen que el contrato sería por 100 millones de dólares (mil 50 millones de pesos) por tres años para que Mariah presente su show todas las noches en el Casino del hotel Planet Hollywood Resort.

"Carey es una de las cantantes más populares y fácilmente podría convertirse en la 'Reina de LAs Vegas'", dijo una fuente.

Mientras tanto, Mariah está viviendo un momento dulce después de su boda con el también músico Nick.

A punto de cumplirse tres meses desde que se dieran el 'sí quiero' por sorpresa en una isla del Caribe, la artista ha hecho un alto en sus compromisos profesionales para hacer una escapada que les ha transportado a la infancia.

El parque de atracciones Disneyland Resort Florida recibió a la pareja, que no dudó en posar sonriente con dos de los personajes más entrañables del mundo animado, Mickey y Minnie.

Incluso Mariah se puso una camiseta con un estampado de lo más romántico: una cariñosa escena de los dos ratones en la que aparecen besándose.

La jornada estuvo llena de nuevas experiencias y es que ninguno tuvo miedo de subirse en las atracciones más arriesgadas: Nick prefirió las montañas rusas de vértigo, mientras que Mariah se enamoró de la sensación de la caída libre en la torre del terror.

Estas vacaciones en pareja desmienten algunos comentarios aparecidos en la prensa recientemente en los que se aseguraba que atravesaban una crisis.

Lo breve de su romance y lo precipitado de su enlace fueron las razones argumentadas por los rumores para justificar estas especulaciones.

One Track Mind is a more-or-less weekly drool over a single song selected on a whim  — usually — and a short thesis on why you should be drooling over it, too.

"Come Down in Time" is taken from the brilliant album Tumbleweed Connection and is the reason why you have to hate Elton John's last period.  John is never in half light any more — never so patient, so bravely remote, so note perfect. Back then, he put out piano music, with an active and jazzy rhythm section, and there was uncommon beauty.

The emotion around "Come Down in Time," a track about lost love, is only deepened by the expressive bass work of Chris Laurence, the quiet majesty of these Bernie Taupin lyrics, and then a lonely oboe.

It's true, the tune isn't representative of the rest of this occasionally rough and rascally tribute to the rural South, which in 2003 was ranked No. 463 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest of all time. More often than not, you'll find songs marked by a gospelly, but still honky-tonk feel — notably "Ballad of Well-Known Gun," "Son of Your Father," "My Father's Gun," and "Country Comfort."

But it is here, inside the spare arrangement by Paul Buckmaster, that John first successfully mines the more melancholy themes that would become so familiar on 1970s radio. Even so, "Daniel" and "Rocket Man," to my ear, have nothing on "Come Down in Time."

John sings in the earnest, deeper version of his voice that was, back then, a tribute to Van Morrison. As he has aged, it is all that remains. But John never works with this kind of dark paint anymore.

There is a timelessness inside the unfulfilled romance of the song's characters because it mirrors our own fading allegiance to John, who has devolved into the kind of obviousness that the person who put out this record would never accept. Twice, the song collapses into melancholy, the way our hearts will. It has nothing to do with MTV, and everything to do with the kind of connecting resonance that this once-great artist hasn't approached in a generation.

You listen in slack-jawed wonder — realizing that "Come Down in Time," alone, could have established the legend of any lesser artist. It's still a song that validates a career marked lately by such obvious hit-pandering and — worse, really — Disney soundtracks.  It's still a song you never, ever want to end.

Knowing that it does, that it all does, makes the crashing end so much the more powerful:

There are women, some hold you tight
While some leave you counting
The stars in the night.

A perfect metaphor, and a sad rebuke, for what later happened to Elton John and his songs.

Hold on to this one.

The author clearly has not listened to Elton John's last three albums, nor is he familiar with Elton John's brilliant "Made In England" from 1995.
I found that paople who are critical or do not like more recent releases from this still great and greatly creative artist simply have not heard it.
To lump all of Elton John's music past about 1980 as dismissable is just plain ignorant.

I agree with the author of this article. Elton's music was his soul back then. You felt him in each song. Too many artists forget to add that 'emotion-ness' to their songs. If you can't hear them 'feel it' in their voice, then the song is just emptiness no matter what it's about.

"Believe" doesn't belong in the same sentence as any song on this album.

The period that you reference, from 1995 until the present, would also include the embarrassing reworking of "Candle in the Wind"; and the actually far more embarrassing duets with LeAnn Rimes and Eminem; overhyped but empty "comeback" tries with "Songs from the West Coast" and "Peachtree Road"; the entirety of "The Road to El Dorado"; a series of shows with Celine Dion called "The Red Piano" in Vegas that were quite beneath him, and a lifeless retread of the brilliant "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy."

Leave room for the idea that I heard of all that stuff, but just didn't like it.

I find it interesting that you picked this song from the album (a great track, don't get me wrong) as it's the only one on the LP that Elton and Bernie didn't write. It was written by a lady named Leslie Duncan. Not sure where she is these days, but that's the only song of hers Elton ever covered.

Personally, I've been consumed by "Tumbleweed Connection" lately. I hadn't listened to it in its entirety in ages and I am truly enjoying the mood, lyrics, and music of the album. It's funny that you chose this song at this point in time. I'm gearing up for Elton's 60th birthday concert at MSG and for the true fans, albums like "Tumbleweed Connection" are what made us fans in the first place. Still following Elton after all these years....life is good!

Interesting points in this article and not all hard to agree with, yet I still find occasional moments of brilliance in this artist's recent work.
Come Down In Time, My Father's Gun, Ballad Of A Well-Known Gun & Where To Now, St. Peter? from Tumbleweed all resonate with a timeless appeal that has not faded with age. Sad that his voice has faded from the strong tenor characteristic it once was into the now husky baritone, at best. (Personally, I enjoy when he plays the piano & stops singing the most, anyway.) At least his body of work is far-reaching and possesses a great deal of variety with many bright spots in it's catalogue. Still a fav after first 'discovering' him in '73.

you are right that this is one E and B's best. If you play / sing this on the piano or guitar it is apparent how perfect it is both melodically and lyrically. Elton's phrasing is outstanding as well. This is also one of his better albums, if not the best. The rawness of the orchestration seem to fade away into bubble gum slickness when we get to yellow brick road.

Another person with something to say just to see their opinion out in front of others. If you don't like his new stuff, why comment? Do you have nothing better to do than spread your negative energy to other people? And, if you are going to comment, at least get your facts straight. Elton's show 'Red Piano' is not with Celine Dion. Those shows are for people like YOU who only want to hear what he did in the 70's. Like on his marvelous new album, "The Captain & The Kid"(not a retread of CF&TBDC), one of the lines in the closing song by the same name, says, "pleasing the people, some of the times, digging into our roots, but I have a brand new pair of shoes, and your on a horse in old cowboy boots." You see, if Elton were still putting out music like he did in the 70's, nobody would be interested now, in fact, he wouldn't even be around today because of that very fact, but because he's slowly evolved into today's Elton John, maybe not as prolific, but still a viable artist by all means, those of you who liked his music back in the 70's but failed to hang in there and listen to the progression, will not even take the time to listen to the new stuff but be quick at hand to write about what you think about his new stuff. Anyone that mentions his "Disney period" is out of touch, if you knew Elton, you would know that he has been a huge fan of Disney since a youth, and that it was an 'honor' to be asked to participate and because of that, we now have a whole new generation of kids starting to find his other music. That was an album for KIDS, not his fans. Get real. Because you can't understand how 40 years later, Elton is still touring to SOLD OUT crowds where ever he goes, still making albums that appear in the TOP 20, still breaking records of all types, you just want to criticize. Change is always taking place, for better or worse, without it, comes DEATH. Long live the KING! ELTON JOHN ROCKS...
P.S. Elton is up for an IVOR award in May (his 12th) for a song he wrote for Scissor Sisters called "Don't Feel Like Dancing", a group that has been said to sound like the early Elton John you enjoy, maybe you should give them a spin!

Uma Thurman e o novo Arpad Arki Busson

A sociedade inglesa parou na noite dessa terça-feira, 1º de julho, para ver um novo par se formar. O motivo, foi a festa oferecida pelo milionário suiço Arpad Busson para comemorar o noivado com a atriz Uma Thurman . Busson abriu as portas de sua mansão em Kensington, Londres, para receber amigos e parentes.

Estavam lá o ex-vocalista do The Police, Sting , com sua mulher, Trudie Styler, o cantor Elton John , que chegou acompanhado do parceiro David Furnish, além da modelo Claudia Schiffer e o marido, Matthew Vaugn.

Uma e Busson assumiram o noivado no final da semana passada, quando participaram das comemorações dos 90 anos do líder africano Nelson Mandela . No sábado, 28, o casal foi fotografado em Saint Tropez, na costa francesa.

Testino photographed Diana Princess of Wales for the cover of Vanity Fair back in 1997.

Sir Elton John held a charity auction at his mansion last week to raise money for the AIDS Foundation, in which one of the items up for sale was to be photographed by legendary fashion photographer Mario Testino.

One guest at the party in Berkshire paid £1 million for the fashion shoot with Testino, who is best known for photographing stars such as Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Moss and Cameron Diaz as well as shooting the late Diana Princess of Wales for the cover of Vanity Fair in 1997.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation was set up in 1992 and is one of the leading non-profit organisations in support HIV/AIDS prevention and eduction. The auction was just one of many events held to raise money for the cause and raised a total of £6m. Other goodies for sale included the chance to write a song with Elton himself, which sold for a massive £1.4m. We know which we'd prefer...
