English very difficult |
I'VE read the article "Keep up with times call by English teacher" (GDN February 17). Mr Awan says that "the highest rate of failures in the annual exams is in the English language subject". I don't agree with the explanation that Mr Awan gives. That failure is due to the fact that English is a very difficult language. It has plenty of irregularities, idioms, phrasal verbs, silent letters, words with several meanings etc. Many years must be devoted to learning it. The failures don't depend on the teachers, but on the language itself. He is right when he says that languages are inexorably tied to the culture which gave birth to them. In that tie there's a great danger. Unesco has expressed: "Not technology but language is the best tool for mental domination." I think that each country must preserve its own language and culture, and, for international communication, the best solution is Esperanto, because it is neutral, easy to learn and efficient.
