This is the first NaturalSacred Site in Peru, a model which recognizes andpromotes Kechua values and principles in theconservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Vilcanota region includes the second most importantglacier system in Peru. The mountain range is dominatedby the snow-capped peak of Ausangate (6,372m), which isconsidered the main Apu of the Southern Andes. Eachyear, in the continuation of a pre-hispanic event, morethan 50,000 people from the Peruvian Andes make apilgrimage to the sacred mountain to participate in thefestival of Q'olloyriti. This site includes great ecological diversity due tothe different Andean altitudinal and climatic zones. It is recognized as a hot-spot of biodiversity, acritical ecosystem, and one of the main centres ofgenetic diversity of important Andean crops. The traditional peoples such as the Q'eros who live inthis area, demonstrate the vitality and continuity ofthe ancient Kechua culture. The Q'eros are known asholders and transmitters of principles and practicesof environmental sustainability which are beingproposed as the basis of a modern ethic ofconservation. For them, mountains or Apus are sacredbeings that represent the most important expressionof human aspirations."Because of restricted access to some areas withvoluntary protection measures exercised by the localpopulation, Natural Sacred Sites conserve localecosystems and their unique biodiversity in aneffective and efficient way, so they could serve asrepositories of critical biological resources for therehabilitation of depleted Andean landscapes", saysAlejandro Argumedo, (Director of the AsociaciónKechua Aymara para Comunidades Sustentables, ANDES).Additionally, the area is a prime tourist destinationin high demand due to its beautiful mountain landscapes."Although local people have not benefited from tourism, they do experience the biological and socioeconomicimpacts produced by this industry", according to SantosQuispe Mayhua, Mayor of T'inki and President of thePro-Vilcanota Spiritual Park Committee. The Vilcanota Spiritual Park is being implemented as aCommunity-Conservation Area, a concept based oncommunity-based landscape management, integratingtraditional models with modern ones. Internationally,it is considered a unique and innovative proposalthat could serve as a model for the establishment ofother special conservation areas in the Peruvian Andes. This initiative is being implemented with technicalsupport from Peruvian governmental organizations suchas CONAM and INRENA, and international organizationsincluding the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the"Sustaining Local Food Systems, AgriculturalBiodiversity and Livelihoods Programme" of theInternational Insititute for Environment andDevelopment (IIED) from England. The launching ceremony for the Vilcanota SpiritualPark will take place at INRENA (Julio Guerra Tovarauditorium), Calle Diecisiete No. 355, Urb. El Palomar,San Isidro, and will include the participation of adelegation from the Park and traditional authoritiesof Q'eros.FOR MORE INFORMATIONSol CuellarEnvironmental Law CoordinatorAsociación ANDESandes@...Tel: 51 84 245021Fax 51 84 232603----------------------------------------------------* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
