Queridos amigos,
No he traducido al espanol este articulo sobre Fedora...que you
escribi..pero lo presento aqui:

I am most terribly saddened at the passing of the great Fedora
Barbieri, not only because she has always been my favorite Italian
mezzo, but especially since we just spent time with her when she came
here for a master class and for the Licia Albanese Gala. No one was as
full of life as Fedora, and those who were outside after the Albanese
Gala (and we have what now will be the last photos of her in this
country)can attest to her signing autographs, letting out those chest
tones (and she sang "Dicitincello vuie" a cappella at the Gala),and
having so much fun with her adoring fans.
In the last years I used to be treated to her "repertory" on the
phone, when I wished her a happy birthday. I always had to hold the
phone far from my ear, and it recalled that "colpo di cannone" voice I
first heard at the old Met in Aida,Trovatore,Norma, and later in
Falstaff and Suor Angelica/Gianni Schicchi. The voice was a phenomenal
"organ" and you were positively riveted by the enormous tone. She was
able to carry the chest voice very high, possibly accounting for some
flatness on top (Eboli was a bit beyond her),but the "Fedora
experience" was still something I can take with me for all the rest of
my days, and seeing her so recently gave me the chance to tell her
(again) how much she meant to me and to her many fans.
Yes, she was a true "peasant" in deportment, and I often
compared her to Anna Magnani in "The Rose Tattoo," but so what...she
was who she was,and she brought joy to so many people, and had a
fabulous operatic career of over 35 years, later singing roles like
Mamma Lucia and Giovanni in Rigoletto (in the film). Funny...just
Saturday,I dialed her number, wanting to tell her I was going to send
some CD's and some photos of her Licia Gala appearance....but now that
great lady is stilled...well,stilled in her physical being, but never
ever in my heart .
As my eyes fill with tears at this very moment,I have her
Judgement Scene on the CD player, and every time I listen to her from
now on, I will always remember this crazy lady who made us all laugh
so much only a few months ago,and whose voice echoed magnificently
throughout the Met as I began to discover opera.
Little by little they leave us...but that is what life (and
death) is all about, and we must rejoice that at least we partook of
some portion of the great talent that these many artists spread among
us. Addio, cara Fedora....I think the walls of heaven (I think you
made it.....there are other sinners up there) must have to be
reinforced today because I do not think they could hold all that those
chest tones!
Let me now pause in my daily chores and just remember you.
In loving remembrance Charlie
