LAUBURUA
The Basque cross is one of the oldest and well-known sun symbols.
Essentially Basque, the four-headed symbol turns to the right in the
direction of the stars. Lauburu means "four heads".
This symbol is found in other cultures as well : East India, Marocco,
Ardonnes...In the Basque Country, the oldest representation of the Basque
cross is found on a cross in the cemetary of Bidarray. On the southern side
of the Basque Country, an iron lauburu was found on the balcony of an 18th
century building in the old section of St Sebastien. However, its' origin is
mysterious. The Basque Cross is a talisman. Placed above the barn, it
protects the troop of sheep.
The Lauburu was found in the mountainous regions, sculpted on tombstones or
above the entryways to Basque houses. The cross is also found on furniture
such as buffets, armoires, tables and chairs. Nowadays, the Basque cross is
prevalent in all branches of decorative art.
The Basque Cross is the symbol of the Basque Country
