I'm sharing this with permission from another China adoption list.... (I've cleaned it up so you'll only see the actual message, not all that other stuff! ;o). This was posted to the other list early this morning (Wed, May 14).Deb W.
From Jane Liedtke (OCDF): Below is a chart created by Mable Meng in our Beijing Office followed by another chart distributed by a law firm in Beijing. Chengdu orphanage reports lack of water to wash clothing and diapers so they need disposible diapers. Stores are closed. She is checking with our OCDF staff in Chengdu to see if we can get disposible diapers to them from Beijing or buy within the region to assist. Bottled water is also needed. We are dedicated to make sure that any donations we receive for earthquake aid will assist orphans and children in need in the region. We will work with our staff in Chengdu to assist those in the region impacted by the earthquake.
Orphan Care - We are collecting for earthquake relief since we anticipate that the orphanage Chengdu will be receiving children who were orphaned by the disaster in the regio ns to the northwest. There are county institutions that are not on the first list below that will be in the region of the disaster where children may also be taken for care. The county orphanages and small city social welfare institutes are listed on the second chart. Donate online at www.ocdf.org/orphansupport or call Lynn at 309-829-8202.
Panda Care - We are also collecting for the Wolong Nature Reserve since the region was heavily hit. Wolong receives much of it's help through donors and visitors (who hold pandas). Without access to the outside for tourism, income to rebuild and maintain the facility will be needed. We know that visiting the pandas has brought great joy to many travelers, it's now important to consider that their staff and facilities will nee d assistance. As many may know, they were in the process of building a new highway to Wolong (not yet open) in preparation for a major dam which is being built on the river that leads to Wolong Nature Reserve from Duijiangyan. Many people had been relocated already from the villages along the old road but some remote villages remain, especially out closer to Wolong in the Qiong minority region. The old road to Wolong that most of you have been on it now impassible due to landslides.
Jane Chart from Mable in Beijing Office Orp. / Situation FuLing Yesterday people could not stand, jolts heavily, but no one hurt or die. Building was destroyed a little bit. They will call the to test the building. They may need money for repair the houses.
Chongqing People could feel the earthquake strongly. Yesterday they all left the orp for the plant area but not any loss and hurt. They came back to orp today. No needs so far.
Nanchong II orp Building cracked, but no one got hurt. No needs so far.
LiangPing The orphans are fine. Yesterday the building jolted, they left orp for saftey place. Today is fine. But 5 people die in their local town elementary school and over 100 were hurted. No needs so far.
YiBin They are quite far from the Wenchuan county. They could feel the earthquake clearly and left the orp yesterday, but move back today. So far so good. Just have heavy rain. No needs so far.
Chengdu People are fine and safe. Building is in distortion. Communication sometimes good, sometimes stopped. Due to the earthquake and heavy rain, the electricity/water supply/gas supply all stopped. Big supermarkets and high buildings are closed. So far their food is enough. But need lots of diapper, since they can not wash the diapper in this situation. There are over 600 kids. The assistant of director said they do not need clothing, but I am thinking they need, since they cannot wash anything.
Fengdu Fengdu people can feel the earthquake but not any bad result.
Nanchong I Can feel the earthquake, no any result.
JingYang Cannot reach them. Try it continuely.
