La célebre esfinge de Gizeh, uno de los monumentos más representativos del Egipto faraónico, va a ser objeto de una restauración a fondo, según ha informado el Ministerio egipcio de Cultura.

Photo taken on March 17, 2006 shows the noseless Great Sphinx of Giza in Cairo, Egypt. The half-man half-lion statue is to get a facelift according to the Egyptian ministry of culture. Restoration work carried by the High Council for Antiquities is to focus on the beast's neck and chest, eroded by desert winds. The last restoration work was undertaken in 1996.
Los trabajos se van a centrar en las zonas más delicadas del monumento, el cuello y el pecho. Además, según los medios franceses, un pueblo bretón participará en la renovación y reconstrucción total de la famosa nariz.
La esfinge, con una altura de 20 metros y una anchura de 14, tiene cuerpo de león y cabeza de humano con el nemes, el velo regio con el ureus sobre la frente y la barba postiza en el mentón. Sin embargo, la barba y la nariz han sido elementos que han desaparecido por el desgaste con el transcurso del tiempo.
Los últimos trabajos de restauración y conservación del monumento tuvieron lugar en 1996. La esfinge, situada en la zona de las grandes pirámides de Gizeh, seguirá abierta al público durante el tiempo que duren estos trabajos.
