Legalising with Apostille
If the country where the legalisation needs to obtained and the country
where the respective document is to be used are parties to The Hague
Convention on Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation of Foreign Public
Documents the process is called “legalising with an apostille”. This is a
simplified legalising process. Apostille means that an apostille seal is
placed on the legalised document, which indicates that the country is a
party to the convention. Denmark became a party to the said convention with
the effect of 1 January 2007 and thus an apostille in Denmark can be
obtained. Legalisation of a document can be obtained from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs where an apostille certificate is affixed to the document.
This form of legalising means that the data provided by an apostille allows
the authorities of each country being party to the said convention to
understand the information provided therein regardless of the official
language of the issuing country, and thus the document is recognised as
being legal without further evidence in another member state nor consulate/
embassy of that country. The apostille likewise the legalisation attests the
validity of the signature of the Notary Public or country official and the
seal thereon, but not of the underlying signature or contents of the
document.

Legalisation with an apostille takes place at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, where the original, notarised document is to be presented. The fee
is DKK 160 per document. If there are no more than 6 documents to be
legalised no appointment is required to be made in advance.
